Our master bedroom is still very much a work in progress, but here are a few things we’ve had fun doing to the space since we moved in back in 2007…
The room started out pretty builder basic…
…but we’ve been busy injecting more of our personality over the past few years…
Here are some links to some of the things we’ve worked on/brought in to the room:
– Planked Walls: Post 1, Post 2, Post 3, Post 4 and Post 5
– Closet Update: Post 1 and Post 2
– Curtains
– Bedding
We look forward to making a few more updates to the room as time and fund-age allows, and we’ll post them here as soon as we’re done!
Claudia
Have you tried IKEA duvets? they have a range of prices/warmth levels. I love how the Master Bedroom is already looking!
Emily
We have the Ikea down comforters that you snap together…it’s pretty nifty and also thrifty. There are two weights, one light and one medium warm. When you snap them together they are incredibly heavy and toasty.

I love…love….love the sliding barn door!!! I would love to have one of those in my home if I had the place:):)

This is stunning!

I’m a pretty new reader, so these links to previous posts are great. What a transformation! I adore how your bedroom is coming along, and am totally copying the mirrored closet doors. IKEA duvets are great – excellent price and really nice quality!
Rachel
I’m so curious about all the woodwork you do on your walls. What do you use and how expensive is it? And is it uber hard to install? I have such bland walls and want SO badly to dress them up but I am riding solo and don’t know if I could do it on my own. Help! 🙂
Layla
Hey Rachel!
You can click on any of the links in this post to check out all the information about our projects. Thanks for swinging by today and happy decorating! 🙂

If all you need is an old comforter to put inside your duvet Layla, I’d suggest either a real inexpensive one from a store like Big Lots or any other discount place (for like $20!), or if you aren’t particular about where one might have been, even a place like Good Will (you can surely wash it!) where you can get it for $10! If it is only going to fill up your cover, no one will know what it looks like or where it came from. Mine has an old comforter inside it that I have had since the 90’s that I would never consider anyone ever seeing again! The room looks beautiful!

Ikea has inexpensive down comforters. I love the mirrors on the doors!
Mary
{sigh…} such a pretty room! Have I ever told you I love every. single. thing. you touch? I am sure I have, but just in case….I’m telling’ ya again!
I’m thinking of going to Haven…fingers crossed!!

I get my duvets from qvc.com, Northern Nights collection. They certainly aren’t cheap but they are hyper-cleaned and are reasonably priced. I have found they are less expensive than some name brand duvets out there that are not hypercleaned. Good luck on your search. Your MB is beautiful 🙂

I love your bedroom and don’t mind seeing it again. 🙂 I’m always reluctant to do big projects if they aren’t absolutely necessary because it seems we never stay in one place long enough to make it worthwhile. Plus, I always wonder if injecting too much of my own style will make it harder to sell. Some day….

Layla,
I love your bathroom and seeing all the progress you’ve made. I know Home Goods sells down comforters.
GMTA! Phase II of the bathroom/bedroom project includes a barn door. Stay tuned…I should have that post up in 2015. {Thank God we don’t do this for a living!} hehehehe
Happy Spring, “Sunshine”!

Your taste is just so amazing. I love everything you pick out for your rooms. My Mr would kill me if I didn’t ask…how does the barndoor thing work out for bathroom privacy. He loves the look but says he would feel like every um, “activity” would be broadcast. I try to remind him our current bathroom isn’t soundproof but I’d love to hear your take on living with it already so maybe I can convince him!

If I may ask, what brand/color is your laminate flooring? I simply LOVE it and my husband I are having a hard time finding one we truly want.
Your home is stunning by the way!
Kenzie
I absoultely love everything about this room! Where is your duvet cover from? Total inspiration!
Karen
I’m totally amazed at all of the projects you manage to do. I think your bedroom looks ahhhhmazing and was shocked at how much more you want to do. I’m drooling over your barn door. slurrpppppp

I can vouch for these down-alternative duvets from Overstock.com because I have FOUR of them: one on every bed in the house. If there is a better King-size duvet for $50.00, I haven’t found it. Snuggly warm but not heavy and just the right amount of loft to plump up the duvet. My husband and kids love them. (Also, it’s down alternative, which is washable and doesn’t have a “down smell,” which, I’m told you can encounter in some down comforters.) One tip: I bought the King size comforter for my Queen bed and it was perfect.

I am always in awe of what you and Kevin do to your home, Layla. I have been eyeing that sliding barn door for some time…I just wish I had a door opening that would work for one! 🙂

Ohhhh, I’m in love with the sliding barn door. Do you have a post about that lovely? Thanks.
Angela S.
Ok, your bedroom is simply gorgeous. I need to decorate ours so bad! Thanks for the inspiration!
Danielle

I don’t think I’ve seen that picture of your bedroom. So pretty and calming! The picture you drew with the sliding barn door is awesome! Love it 🙂

Beautiful bedroom. You and Kevin did a fabulous job!
I have to mention the pillows in your header, I just picked up two exactly like the floral one on the left for $5 ea at a barn sale. Love them 🙂
Sarah
Overstock.com has awesome prices on duvets! Got my king sized for $30! Your bedroom is gorgeous by the way!!!
Kelly
Try Overstock.com for down comforters. I’ve bought a couple from there. They were beautiful and at a great price. They normally have a great selection. Your house looks great!:)
Kim H.
I just found a thread count queen size down comforter on clearance at Dillard’s for $50. Beautiful work on your bedroom.
Amanda
I just wanted to second Claudia – we use IKEA down duvets in every bedroom. My oldest one is 13 years old and queen-sized, and it’s still in awesome shape. And really reasonably priced!
Amy Fountain
I love those mirrors! They make the room look so much bigger. Love all the whites in the room as well.

Another vote here for an Ikea down comforter. I got the king-sized one for our queen bed, for $49.99, last year. I think the price is still the same. BUT I’m glad I got the king – because it’s not the measurements it says it is. It’s supposed to be, I believe, 102″ x 86″ (this is “Ikea king” – a little smaller than a standard king). I’ve washed it twice, but when I went to sew down a regular-sized king duvet cover to fit it, the cover didn’t fit. So I laid the comforter down on the floor to measure it, and it was 92″ x 86″. If you muddle this over in your head, you realize that it could not possibly have shrunk in the wash in just one dimension, and all the shrinking happened in just one dimension. So don’t trust their measurements; do go up a size. Other than that, though, it’s been a great comforter – once I re-sewed the duvet cover, all was well.
I’ve also gotten down comforters at thrift stores – picked up a full and a twin (or maybe they’re larger than that, but those are the beds they’re on) for $10 each, and they were in great condition. I tend to buy sheets and pillow cases at thrift stores, too – you can easily tell the quality on visual inspection, they stand up to rigorous washing, and $5 beats $50 for a high-quality cotton sheet any day.
Nancy
To Misfit,.. yes fabric can shrink predominently in one direction due to the way it is made. The warp or length-wise threads are held under tension and are inevitably stretched when woven, whereas the weft or across threads are not under nearly the same strain. When you wash the fabric, especially the first time, it will relax and shrink. The Ikea comforters are still a great comforter for the price.

I love how everything is coming out. I adore your planked wall (just pinned it twice on my Pinterest boards!).
I’m off to check out more of your blog. I have read it many times before but haven’t been here in a while. Thanks for writing that wonderful Photography post from ShootFly (oops can’t remember the exact name). I think I may look in to their DSLR tutorials!
Linda

It looks amazing already.. love those details.

i love your blog and think you and kevin have a great sense of style. i’ve read that you would like to replace your laminate flooring with wood flooring. would you ever consider engineered wood flooring? why or why not? we would also like to replace our laminate flooring but we are unsure if solid wood or engineered wood would be the best choice-any thoughts?
kelly
love the barn door!! it’s such a pretty room! i always get my comforter inserts at ikea, or ross/t.j. maxx, marshalls, somewhere like that. pretty cheap and they seem to hold up well.
Jami
So funny that you say that about down comforters…I was just shopping for new sheets and a comforter and came over here to look for some inspiration. Yes, they are spendy…sheets are too! Ugh. Nevertheless, a beautiful bedroom you have there!
cris
You two sure are gifted!! So I see from your updated posts you did not go with the Pottery Barn locker-style closets…has anyone commented to you that they built them? If so, is it possible you have that link so I could check out their plans?
Your slidding barn door it amazing! Great piece of art as well as function!
lorrie williams
I have door envy. LOVE it!
Melissa
What did you use for your crown molding and baseboards? Love the simplicity of it but not sure where to start.
Layla
Hey Melissa! We just used regular old pre-primed MDF 1×4’s from the home improvement store. 🙂
christa
I looked around and couldnt find posted the color you used on your master bedroom walls…. i heard a refrence to them as something hubbard??
Just love watching your transformations by the way.

Claire
What color did you use on the chest with the blue-gray door and drawers? I love it!
Gloria Stevens
What are the paint colors of the night stand (white & gray-blue one)? Thanks, Gloria
Layla
The gray-blue color is Sea Salt by Sherwin Williams, but I’m not sure what the white color is. Mary at UrbanFarmgirlAndCo.blogspot.com would know! 🙂
Emma's Wickess
did you get the big sliding door on your room? if you did, where did the door come from? or is it something you put together yourselves??
Looks Great!! You have AMAZING style!!!
Marcy
hi, i’m curious about your shade. is it grass or bamboo? was it custom or off the shelf? i really like it and want to change from my “blah” white faux wood blinds to something like this in my bedroom but i can’t find just the right shade. also- about cleaning them- is it easy to vacuum the dust or pet hair from them?
your blog has inspired me many times over. thanks for sharing all this with everyone.
peace!
Michelle Nixon
What is that fabulous color of the barndoor style sliding door? Love it!
Debbie
Lovely bedroom! It “feels” so peaceful.
Question: what paint color is used on the barn door?
Thanks!
shannony
No mention of the roman shades you have in the windows. Such a pretty color and texture. Will you pleeease tell what they are?
Thank you!
Layla
Oh yeah! I think we got those for $9.99 at Bed, Bath and Beyond before they stopped selling them. 🙁
Sarah
Hi! Can you please let me know the name of the paint color you choose for your bedroom walls? Thanks so much!
Laura Petrie
Layla I love this room!!! Beautiful job! What is the name of the color you used on our walls?
DeeDee O'Neal
Could you tell me where you found the bedding (plaid quilt) with the blue, red in it? I need this!
