Our New House – First Floor

Oct 17, 2012 By Layla

My favorite space in our new house is the sunroom.

It’s straight ahead when you walk through the front door, and our back door leads outside on the left side of it. On the right side of the room, there’s a large storage closet and a half bath.

Here’s a shot of the bathroom:

Can’t wait to cottage it up!

The first thing we moved into the sun room from our old house was our piano. And when I say, “we”, I mean- professional piano movers.

The second thing we moved in there was window treatments…a.k.a- a roll of brown Kraft paper and some painters tape.

There are a few important things missing from this house. None of the kitchen or bathroom cabinets have shelves in them, and none of the windows have window treatments on them. We haven’t decided how we’re going to permanently handle either of these issues yet, but the Kraft paper taped to the bottom half of some of our windows seems to be doing the privacy trick for now.

If you look to the left when you come through the front door, you see the living room.

And if you’re anything like me and Kev, you see a wall full of white-painted built-in cabinetry and a total fireplace makeover, too- ha!

If you look to the right when you come through the front door, you see the kitchen.

It’s small, but it’ll work fine for us, and there’s a generous pantry off to the left side of it. Right now, everything is pretty neutral, neutral, neutral, and new, new, new- so we look forward to injecting some cottage-style character in there in the future.

Our pets have been adjusting to the new house pretty well. They LOVE sunning on the sun room floor in the morning.

Tomorrow, Kit-Cat and I look forward to blogging about the upstairs.

He should have it all sniffed out by then.

Love it! And I really like the colors. Nice backdrop. How about something in burlap for the windows?

Layla, how did you find a house like this in foreclosure? Did you sign up at the foreclosure dot com site?

      Hi Laura!

We actually just looked for foreclosures in the neighborhood that we wanted to live in. There were a handful to choose from.

When we moved into our new home about 6 years ago, we went to either Home Depot or Lowe’s and had white wood shutter style blinds cut to size for our windows. They have really held up in the Florida heat and humidity and look nice still today. All we had to do was measure and install. It was so easy as the store did the cutting and my hubby installed them in one day- about 12 windows- some were really big, too.

I have been reading your blog since last year, but till today I have written a comment. This is about Kit-cat. I thought cats are reluctants to change adresses, I mean I know histories about little fur ones that escapes to return to previous homes. How this process went with your kitty? Any advices to make the change more easy?

Layla…Congrats on your new home. I just found your blog a couple of weeks ago, via a comment on HOUZZ about your fireplace makeovers at the old house. Such a beautiful job you and Kevin did on the old house. I KNOW you two will do a beautiful cottage with your new home.

I couldn’t be more excited for you two. You are so deserving of a beautiful home.

I was so sad when you sold your other place but I can see some wonderful things happening in your new palace. I am in love already.

I can see some new decorating trends happening in the very near future. You both are such an inspiration to so many.

I wish you many, many happy years in your new home.

Now Kit-Cat hurry up and get up those stairs so we can see the next level.

It goes without saying, I have been dying to see the house. I love love LOVE it!
I do have to be honest tho………………….I teared up when I saw Kev’s guitar. That’s what did it for me. I got all sappy at that point. Shoot, I have to go wipe the mascara and blow my nose.
    So proud of you!!!!!!!!!!

P.S.. Kev —- we have a little Stevie Ray Vaughn sitting in our great room. I get it!!!!!!! 🙂 hugs my friend.

how exciting! I felt the same way about our house when we moved in 4 years ago- never would have picked any of the finishes that the builder put in (I spy similar light fixtures and wall color in your place!) and we’re almost there. (we’re kinda slow) 😉
Can’t wait to see how you transform it!
