Remember those curtains we used to have in the dining room?

Well, about a month ago they moved into the living room- and almost immediately after they went up, we were totally inspired to cozy up that side of the room for Christmas!

We created a tabletop vignette using lots of things we already had, and two small (live) trees from the home improvement store. I read my mags in that corner and man do those babies smell GOOD! (The trees, not the mags. Well, on second thought- I do love the smell of a brand, new magazine, so it’s just an all around good smellin’ corner altogether now.)
The table itself was a project I’ve been wanting to tackle for loooooong time. Ever since we moved in, we’ve had a low, 36″x36″ square trunk in that space…

But I’ve always envisioned something taller, and round, like the ones you see in the Ballard Designs catalog…
(Ballard Designs- “Terrific Table and Tablecloth” $129.00)
I was determined to come up with a more cost effective solution though, so I took an inexpensive little table I got from Kevin’s Mom…

…and topped it with a 36″ round of wood from Lowes ($38)…

…and voila! A festive & frugal version for our living room!

(If you’re worried about stability, simply use construction adhesive to bond the two pieces together)
The tablecloth came from Target ($12.99), and I may or may not have ran up to it when I saw it hanging on the shelf all by its lonesome. I’m mad for plaid and even though it’s not the right size (70″), I had to have it! (Secret: we just made sure the shorter side was up against the wall so no one would know! Hee hee!)
The little gift boxes were actually ornaments on our Christmas tree last year. They’re just little empty Jell-o, medication, and other random boxes we had around the house, wrapped in solid-colored wrapping/Kraft paper. The ribbon around them came from Michaels.
And last but not least, I gotta give a shout out to my man Matthew Mead! That’s his fabulous “Holiday” magazine on the top of the stack there…

(Click HERE for more info on “Holiday”)
And there ya have it!
Our cozy, Christmas corner, built for me and Mr.P!

PS- Our table lamp came from TJ Maxx a few years back, and I “scarfed” the tallest tree with ornaments because I’d rather look at razzle-dazzle than dirt. 🙂

Layla
Love it Layla! The plaid tablecloth is to die for! 🙂 xoxo
Thank you Myra!
Glad to hear you’re mad for plaid too!
Layla 🙂
Gorgeous! I love the tablecloth!
What a perfect vignette! I love the chalkboard label on the pot!
Love the whole set up!! Ordinarily I’d run to TJ Max to get that lamp, but I have a feeling they don’t have it 😉
It is a very beautiful and cozy corner. I love those little trees!
The plaid is the statement piece for sure. Beautiful, fun, cozy. All of it.
And who doesn’t love Kraft paper? It has been our go to wrapping paper for years. It gets even more fun when there are kiddos around to decorate the paper for you! Here’s hoping your little guy or gal has joined your family and is up for the challenge next year!!! 🙂
This turned out so great! I love how you made this elegant vignette look so easy to put together. Plaid red – gorgeous. LOVE the lamp! Funny how curtains started all this. p.s. I love your dining room chairs – please do tell how you put your dining room together. I’m still searching for a good set for the fam.
Love it as always! Just bought the matching table runner to that table cloth the other day.
I LOVE it. Looks great. Will you email me where you got the chandelier shades above your table?
Here’s a link to the post we wrote about our chandy shades:

Everything looks amazing as usual. Thanks for the beautiful ideas.
Best wishes,
Natasha.
So, so pretty! 🙂
BTW, our fireplace surround & mantle construct starts this weekend…the one that will hopefully look an awful lot like YOURS! Wish me luck, ha!
Thank you, good luck, and have fun with your re-do!
Layla 🙂
Love your little trees, love the chalkboard painted pot with Merry Christmas, mind if I pinch it?
Oh, I love it! It’s so simple, but so cozy!!
P.S. I used the color “Sea Salt” recently in a room that we added white molding to, and I get SO many compliments on it! I am loving the color…it is the perfect pleasant-cheery-but-somewhat-neutral shade! Thanks for the recommendation. Sometimes picking out paint colors seems like such a daunting task, so it’s fun to hear/see what others use. 🙂
You two have such great style. Thanks for the inspiration! The cute little live trees really have my “creative juices” flowing 🙂
perfect….love the greenery….that reminds me to add some to my decor.
Thanks
Have a wonderful day
Very nice! I love the calmness of your decorating. Beautifully done!
It looks amazing ! I really really enjoy reading and looking at your blog. You make me laugh and smile and always inspire me thank you!
Layla I love your little corner it looks very inviting and a good place to read those decorating magazines!! I have the same chalkboard pot. I bought three several years ago at Walmart. I love using them aren’t they fun. Last year I wrote Fa-la-la on one for the kitchen. I love Christmas songs and I am always humming so it seemed to be the right thing to write on them!!! Deck the halls with hmmm hmm hmm♪♫♪♫☺
Merry Christmas,
Kathysue
Layla,
Lovin’ the tablescape! Aren’t those “little corners” just the most fun to work with. I know I love them!
May you both have a Merry Christmas, and may there be a “wee little wiggly bundle” underneath your Christmas Tree!!
Angela
Where did you get your curtains? I love them! And your entire house!!! You motivated me to finally paint my kitchen cabinets 🙂
Cute little vignette! I love it! Your house is beautiful!
Nice, Layla! Didn’t you just love Matthew Mead’s Holiday bookazine!?!? You have a nice little corner to enjoy reading. Your skirted tabletop looks great! 😀
Love it!!! And I bet it smells fabulous in your house. And I love the table. And I am glad to hear that I am not the only one who uses too small of a topper. Got to love the plaid!
Your home is beautiful, very peaceful and serene. Your new table looks perfect in that corner!
Layla, Love the round table! I am totally stealing this idea from you! Thanks for the holiday decorating ideas for those of us who are inept!
I was totally thinking about getting a small rosemary “tree” from Home Depot to festive up our den a little, and the pot with chalkboard is just the perfect accent! Love it!
Your house makes me want to move to Charleston SC and live on the beach. Really badly. If I strike it rich and move I’ll pay you to decorate it!
Encore! Encore! I love it. (Duh)
You might be happy to know that my newspaper tree is officially up. Maybe I’ll have a vignette in the works by the weekend?? Wish me luck. 🙂

I am SOOO in love with your kitchen, Layla! Mine is set up very similar. I just wish I could convince hubby to let me paint the cupboards white and remove all the doors…..!! 🙂 Your little reading corner is so cozy looking! I’ll bet you spend alot of time there curled up with those great smelling mags!! lol! (I KNOW what you mean!!!)
xoxo laurie
very cute!
What a great inexpensive idea.

I’ve always loved round skirted tables and have used that trick too when the cloth is too short! Love the chalk label! I might have to do the same if I find a rosemary tree. They do smell wonderful.
Very pretty vignette!
Lol. I may or may not have done the same thing when I saw that tablecloth @ Target myself. I snagged it for my kitchen table. Love the new look in your living room.
Where did you get the curtains from?? I love them.
It’s awesome Layla! I love those trees, are they pricey? Might have to go get one or two, I’d think they’d make great gifts, too! Did you pot them yourselves?
I’m mad about plaid too!!!
~michelle~
~*~*Love it!! Looks so Christmasy and cozy!!~*~Hugs, Rachel 😉 ~*~*~*
Ha-I did a double take when I spied that plaid tablecloth: I have the same one on my kitchen table right now. Gotta love Le Target!!
Love your blog and I’m thinking good thoughts for you guys on your adoption journey!
That’s a great idea to wrap empty boxes from around the house! 🙂
Everything looks warm and cozy!
I love your holiday decor! Christmas is my favorite time of year and the kids have been having so much fun with all the white lights in our house. Where did you purchase your curtains. I love your style and thank you and Kevin for opening your home to us!
Simple & so cute! I love it all and it quietly says Christmas. Those real trees are just the best, I need to get one. xoxo
Great ideas! I made a table just like that out of a plastic trash can and a wood top – the perfect place to store stuff we don’t use often.
That is really very nice! I have an old table standing somewhere, and I think I should try to bring it out and do something similiar.
Just curious though – why did you change the top of the table? Since you are covering it anway..?
Everything looks wonderful and in the spirit.
Miss you both . When are you coming back to the island for a visit?
love it all!!! Where did u get the curtains? And the pots w/ the chalkboard?
We got the Pottery Barn “Medici” curtains on eBay. (The color is “Bran”)
I got the pots at TJ Maxx or HomeGoods a few years back.
You could make your own though. http://LeenTheGraphicsQueen.com has adhesive-backed chalkboard decals on their site! 🙂
Layla
I LOVE THE HOUSE YOU’VE CREATED! You guys are so gifted! I feel inspired by you.
I was almost forgetting… Talking about “inspiring”, Heidi Klum and Seal just bought a new house in La. You need to take a look. I think you’d love the Italian rose gardens.
xo

It is a beautiful little corner. I love the pop of red from the tablecloth. Brilliant, as always! 🙂
Love it! Love it! Love it! 🙂
Wonderful, as always. You truly can create the most amazing things with simple, “already had this” around the house stuff. I always learn something and am always inspired. Thanks.
Have a lovely holiday season!
Karen
Love the table!!! And the little packages! And the little trees!! So sweet!
I think I’ll head out to my field and dig up a couple little fir trees today while it’s sunny. Perfect!!
