Master Bathroom

Aug 2, 2012 By Layla

Well, my appointment with the orthopaedic surgeon went well, and my rheumatism flare-up seems to slowly be un-flaring (thanks to a cortisone shot in the tukus- yowza!).

Kev’s been working on our master bathroom while I’ve been confined to the couch, and although it’s not a major makeover (more like a “paint bucket special”- ha!), the work he’s done has made such a difference in there!

We’ve made lots of changes to our master bedroom over the past couple of years…

…but the master bathroom was another story…

Badly stained unsealed grout, unpainted baseboards (that weren’t even attached to the walls), and a bad paint job were just a few of the things that needed tackling in there. (We had also only been using a shower curtain liner and a teeny tiny little bath mat in there for the past 5 years- shhh!)

Here’s what Kev whipped up, while I was stuck down for the count…(check out the “before and after” grout!)

We wanted to wrap up this re-do fairly quickly, and our main goal was to inexpensively refresh the space. We drew color inspiration from the Chip It! card I blogged a few days ago…

Kev started by thoroughly scrubbing all the grout lines on the floor with a narrow, stiff brush and a big ol’ jug of grout cleaner/resealer.

Then he used some antique white-colored Grout Renew, an old toothbrush, and some paper towels to make the lines look brand new…

Crazy difference, huh? Every time I hobble in there now I think, “why didn’t we do this five years ago!?” I love that it sealed the grout, too. Hopefully it’ll stay cleaner-looking a little longer from now on.

Here’s a resource list in case anyone out there wants to click on through to the other side:

Conservative Gray -Sherwin Williams
Moonlight White – Benjamin Moore (mixed at Sherwin Williams)
rug – TJ Maxx
trash can – TJ Maxx
green tray – Pottery Barn (discontinued)
seagrass plant pot– Ikea
apothecary jars – ? (we’ve had them forever!)
towel bar- Target
towels- Target
shower curtain – Target

And speaking of that shower curtain, I forgot to tell Kev to snap a full-length picture of it, but he did take a close-up of my favorite part…the rouched, bottom edge:

I dig rouching….and that our shower actually has a curtain now- ha!

Love it! I had to double check the before and after photos because I thought you’d bought new medicine cabinets too! Amazing how different they look with the paint and accessories. And you may have just saved my bathroom tile from a sledgehammer the next time I have a bad day. I’ll have to get some of that grout stuff and see what can be done. Awesome re-do, as always!

Thanks so much for sharing how Kevin cleaned the grout. What a pretty shower curtain…just might need to get that one.

    Blessings,

Kevin did a great job!! hope you feel better and I love your blog. I have to tell you that after reading some of your post about southern architec(?) and also seeing the table that Shauna built, well my husband and I made a trip to Cullman, Al for some reclaimed wood!!! I let them know how I had heard about them…this was about a 11 hour round trip for us but we loved it and I thank you for your inspiration…darlene

THIS is the best post I’ve seen in 6 months on ANY website!!! First, you have the same 3 segment medicine cabinets that I do….’cept mine are oak, as is the base cabinet. I’m thinking paint, now…

Second, your grout/tiles are almost identical to mine and WOW, did that grout sealer make a huge difference!!! I can’t wait!!!

    You rock!

I saw my podistrist today for plantar fisiitas and got a cortisone shot in my foot. I began to shrill in pain and he instructed me to breath as if I was giving birth.. I had 3 natural births and this breathing technique didn’t work then and I do remember quiet well I squelled in pain. So in between the shrills and breathing I survived and am a better women from it, lol. Oh, it only lasted only about 3 minutes but that was a long 3 minutes. So far just my foot is a tad bit improved but know in a couple of days it too will de-flare.

Sending you well wishes and a speedy recovery.

P.S. So glad you are feeling better, Layla! But how nice to have a husband who will do something like this for you while you are not feeling well. Good job, Kev!

Think I bought your map from Prattville Pickers for my son’s room. Gosh I need your help. Maybe if it is in fact your map, then I can channel your talent through the map by touching the state of Alabama. I don’t know. But it’s worth a try.

That is a wonderful example of small changes adding up to something wonderful. And I need to echo the big thanks for showing me what to do with yucky grout…..why did I have to do algebra in school instead of learning something really useful like this?

Layla so glad you are feeling so much better.
Nothing worse than being down and out.
The motto has to be if you do not have your health you have nothing. Money, houses, etc do not trump feeling well.
Even being down you and Kevin create beautiful spaces.
Love the color of the walls. I needed to get braver with the color gray.
    Feel great. Geri.

Unyucking bathroom floor grout is next on my to-do list. Do you think your grout was originally tan or white? It’s hard to tell if the Grout Renew cleaned it or dyed it.

LOVE your bathroom–so clean and fresh! We actually have a bathroom vanity set-up similar to your’s. We got the grand idea to build a tall box that fir perfectly between our two sinks. We added crown moulding at the top and shelves and now it takes on the look of a built-in. We love it and it adds a place for tissues, q-tips, lotions and soaps and a cute stoneware pot that I throw all my daily “cosmetic needs” in. We painted our vanity a mocha brown and the tower is the same color.

Isn’t that grout renew stuff amazing? The grout in our basement bathroom had turned completely yellow over the years (we suspect there were some indoor smokers who lived here before…). I went at it with that stuff and it was like a whole new bathroom.

And I love the rug you’ve added to it!
