Calling All E-Friends

May 5, 2011 By Layla

Greetings!

We have some exciting news to share today!  We’ve been working on something “design TV-related” for a while now, and we’re really excited about the direction it’s moving in.
Think:
our blog in 3D…meaning, low-dough/high-smile room redos, real-life DIY adventures, and lots of YOU!

At this point, we need to see if you’d be into A) having us over to help you redo a room or two (or three!), and/or B) helping us redo someone’s elses space(s). (Maybe you’re a mural artist, or a seamstress, or you’d just like to lend a helping hand by painting a wall or working on a craft project with us, etc.)

We also need to know what area you live in. (City/State/Country)  (You can live anywhere, and every comment will be read!)

We hoping to round up as many responses as we can in the next 48 hours, so if you’re interested, and you have time to leave a comment, please do!

We’re working with some super-talented and creative folks and they’re very interested in seeing the response to this post, so please don’t be shy, and thank you so much! We’ll definitely keep you posted and we hope to hug you soon!

PS- We’d also like to invite you to join us on Facebook & Twitter!

(We’re seeking responses on those sites too! Thank You!)

Right now my DH, my three children, and I live in a 2600 sq ft house in TX. In late July we take possession of the key to our 1100 sq ft condo in DC, where we will live for one yr while my DH goes to a military school.

The condo is beautiful, but the current tenant painted one wall in the LR royal blue and one wall lime green; the DR is brick red; the kitchen is the lime green with the royal blue on the underside of the eat-at cougar that separates the kitchen and the DR. The MBR was painted dark grey.

We deliberately chose to live small so we could live close to DH’s school, and so we could delve into city life for the year. But we have three kids, two bedrooms, and LOTS of paint color issues! There will be a day (or so) of painting, and oodles of space-maximizing that needs to happen. We think maybe we’ll line three loft beds up in the kid room and put an upright dresser and a chair under each loft to give each child their “space”. The closet is between their room and the BR and that will be the Privacy Room, for all clothing changing, etc.

His cool would it be to have you help us go from 2600 sq ft in TX to 11 sq ft in DC? You could meet us in DC and come see the apartment with us when we get to town. Because, oh yes there’s more crazy – we rented this condo over the Internet, sight unseen (except for lots of pics). In fact, we signed and mailed the lease just today!

I live in Phoenix, AZ. Come to my house! I would love your input in my home.

Sorry. I thumb-typed my prior message on my iPhone. There is, of course, no eat-at cougar in this condo. However, there IS an eat-at COUNTER.

And “HIS cool would it be…”? That should he “HOW cool would it be…”

I love your blog and can’t wait to see what you’ve got up your sleeves. I also would love some help decorating our home. We moved in about 2 1/2 years ago, and due to child #5 coming along and caring for my aging father (who recently passed away), I have had no time or energy to decorate my home. It is boring and is driving me nuts! I live in Chandler, AZ and am up for a decorating adventure with you. I can sew (nothing too fancy),paint, or whatever else, and it could all be done with a little background music, because I’m a classical musician. Though our genres are different, Kevin could bring his guitar and jam a bit!

Seriously?!?!? I have been following your blog for a little over a year now and you have completely transformed the way I think about my home! With that said, I would like you to invision piles of MDF, paint cans, baskets, etc…can you see it? Well that is what my living room looks like now 😉 I’ve managed to spruce up one bathroom and I’m almost done with my small guest bathroom all drawn from inspiration from you after discovering your blog. I live in a small garden home in Montgomery, AL (yes, just a hop, skip and a jump away) with my husband, 4 yr old son, and two dogs. It is pretty tight around here and I will admit that I was beginning to get discouraged since we are not in a financial position to purchase a new home. But after discovering your blog and of course all of the gazillion blogs that I end up at by clicking here and there, I see that my home has the potential to be “mine”….just gotta work on it one room at a time. It would literally be a dream come true to have you help with a room…I would let you have your pick!

Oh my goodness, how exciting it would be to have you come to Arizona and help me do something with my family-dinning room. I have no clue or whatsoever when it comes to decorating. It is so frustrating to try to come up with ideas and put them together for me.

What a wonderful site you guys have so glad I found you.
I live in a 100 year old farm house alone with my cat and for four
years I have been trying to redo my upstairs room but can’t get very
far with it especially since I broke 3 vertibraes and messed up my neck at
the Sheriffs Dept where I work as a Correctional Officer.
So I promise not to take you to jail if you redo any room you like in this ole
    house
    Thanks

I would LOVE for you to come help us redo several of our rooms! We have lived in our house since 2006 and most of the rooms I have a hard time committing to one scheme. Most of the work on our house we hire out because we know nothing about home repair. Although we did use appliance epoxy to spray paint our refrigerator black instead of buying a new one.

In Little Rock, Arkansas (United States =).

Obviously, I would prefer for you to come to our home and help redo rooms, but would love to learn as well from you guys by helping on someone else’s home close by – although we have no helpful skills but are hard workers.

You would love our dogs – two Chihuahuas with lots of personality & super people friendly!

    Hi Kevin and Layla,

I llive in Louisiana and would love your help with our living room and our bedroom. I am trying to achieve a cottage look, but with what I have. Our house is an Acadian style house.

I also sew and would be honored to help out if you were doing a house that was within driving distance.

    Hey there!

I am a super busy mother of three little girls 5 and under and love your website! I was just telling my husband tonight that I wanted to change our design style because I love the warm, clean look of your designs. Our style right now revolves around an older pottery barn look – dark wood, deep reds, etc. – and it feels very formal. We are really looking for something new.

We live in the suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota and have a finished basement that is need of serious help. The previous owners did the work themselves and it was not finished off nicely. We want to try out our new style (based on your design schemes!) in the space. It has two bedrooms, a full bath, a wet bar, and a large tv area/playroom. There is a slider that walks out to our backyard and there are plenty of windows but the area still feels dark and yucky. Even though the kids have their toys down there THEY still don’t like being in the space. At this point we don’t have the extra money to do the space justice, so instead 1/3 of our house sits unused.

    HELP US!!!

I think this is a little late…I live in small town Lingle, Wyoming. I THINK you might find it on a map. We would love to have some creative minds add some life to our country home. We’ve lived in our home almost a year and it’s still very empty, mostly all white walls, minimal furniture…I just haven’t a clue! Where to put furniture, what window treatments…and what to do with an awful textured wallpaper wall that mimics stamped leather. Not sure if I should attempt to remove it all or cover it! Or we could help with a redo. My husband and i like building simple furniture using reclaimed lumber. But oh, my goodness! Over a thousand comments! I haven’t a chance.
And since I’m commenting…I love your site and style.

WHAT A TREAT!!! I would love, love, love to have you come makeover a room (or 2 or 3)!!! My “studioffice” is ripe for a re-do (see it here http://bellabdesigns.blogspot.com/2011/01/2011-goals-organize-more-goal-3.html … it actually looks worse now – the harder I organize the worse it gets!). My kitchen is also in desparate need of some TLC. We have builder-grade white cabinets, which were made with a coating of some kind of cruddy white plastic(ish) stuff that is peeling off. We need to peel this off and paint and would love new countertops (or to spiff up the same ones we have) and either tile or hardwood flooring. We also need hardwood in the living room. I could make a list a mile long! Thanks for the opportunity to submit for participation!

Come on up to Canada, to a beautiful little country home. We are expecting baby #2 early next year, and need to move our master bedroom up to our cozy little upstairs loft. I’m afraid the harvest gold bathroom decal needs to go! I would love your help! And so would our wee little one, and adorable toddler!

Hi I live near Princeton, NJ (about an hour from both Philadelphia and New York). We have a small cottage but will be doing a major renovation/addition this summer. We are hiring someone to frame out the new stuff but we are tackling everything else ourselves – plumbing, heating, air conditioning, electrical, and of course finishing. We hope to be ready for design/decorating next spring (2012). I don’t know whether that fits with your timeline.

We purposely kept our small home small. It started life as a summer cottage for shipbuilders living mostly in Brooklyn in the 1940’s. It would be very much a blank canvas, particularly the two bedrooms upstairs as they will be brand new.

There are lots of windows (22 in a house that is only 1300 s ft). I can send you plans if you would like. Thanks!

I think I might be late… We have a contemporary in southern NH with a kitchen in desperate need of a makeover! We redid the rest of the house but kitchen and bathrooms are in need of some creative TLC!!

Layla and Kevin, my husband and I love your blog and your great work. We live in ST. LOUIS, MO in a little gingerbready cottage. We are looking to redo our guest bedroom and if we could work with you to have it done up Lay/K style, we’d be overjoyed. Seriously. We are also DIYers so pitchin’ in is our speed.

Probably to late but I likve in rural Nebraska. My husband and I live in a 4 square brick farm house that is in need of some help and I can’t seem to find the time. I also have a grainery on my place that I am in the process of turning into a shop and would love help with that as well. Thanks for your time.

I live in a suburb of Denver, Co. I would love a closet re-do…we have available square footage but the builder closed it off???? A guest room re-do perhaps??…..hmmmm either one would work. Oh by the way, I am THE Goodwill Ninja…so if you are looking for a thrift shopper I’m your girl!!

Hi! My husband and I will be building a farmhouse style home later this year on some family farmland, I want my house to look as if it’s a vintage farmhouse that’s been there for years vs a new build. We live in beautiful Northwest Arkansas in the Ozark Mtns. Would also love to lend a hand helping with someone else’s home, I can work a paint brush pretty well. Excited about your new venture!

    Hi Layla and Kevin!!!

I found your blog recently by doing a search trying to get some ideas about a few projects that I wanted to do in my house!! I am not a blogger (at least not yet) so this is all new for me. Actually, this is the very first comment I have ever left!! I am a stay at home mom of 4 year old twin girls and a 2 year old little boy!! My girls LOVE doing little decorating projects with me and I have found your blog to be very inspiring!!! After looking at the pictures of 99 steps I had to call about vacationing there with my family. It is such a charming place that I am hoping to share some much needed time with my hubby and children there.
OK, now to my husband, in your post you mentioned mural painting. I have the most talented, amazing, artistic Husband and I would love to share some of his work with you. He has a full-time job NOT in the art field that could never evoke the passion and pleasure he has gotten from doing these child oriented murals for friends and family. Please let me know if you would like to take a look!!! We live in Lexington, KY!!!

    Thank You, Amber

I am probably late also, but absolutely would LOVE for you to come decorate one room, two rooms, any and all rooms in my house! We especially need help in our odd kitchen and living area that are open to each other. I love the openness just need the right pieces of furniture and haven’t been able to figure that out. And character would be nice also:) Hope this new endeavor goes wonderfully for you both!

We would love your help! We have lived in our home a year. The house has a beautiful open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and new toffee colored cupboards that opens into a 70s living room with a huge brick fireplace with brass and paneling. It is a lovely open living area but very disjointed. There are 4 colors of trim and woodwork in the house and I would love help unifying and warming up the main living space. Come visit us in Ames, Iowa!

I would love some help with my kitchen and guest bath! We recently bought a Cape Cod style home in Bellingham Washington. The kitchen walls have been overlayed with a plaster and hay technique and painted yellow. The look is a little different, but kinda cool and farmhouse looking! There is a large awning covering the top part of the very tall windows, I think the previous owners were going for a French Country look? The guest bath is very dated and dark. Being on the coast I love the cottage look and would love some ideas!

    Thanks~ Laurie

Guessing you have been overwhelmed with the amount of responses! My reply to your email keeps getting kicked back. Hmm….
Anyway. come on over to Tallahassee, FL and by the way- we do have a pool for those times it feels like too much summer.
WE are in the middle of a complete re-do and could not only use all the help we can get, but ideas too. I often refer to myself as a schizophrenic decorator…I like too many things and can’t seem to land on one idea. I definitely need help.

Oh wow! I have the perfect room for the two of you to create your magic in! We closed in our garage 5 years ago to open a prom/pageant dress rental shop. It curently has over 300 formal dresses, loads of sparkling platform shoes, and enough rhinestone jewelry to bedazzle a small town!! It’s been a lot of fun but it is definately time to ditch the dress shop and turn it into a great family room. My husband and teenage son are just dying for a little masculinity in there! Please, please, please pick me!

We are crossing our fingers in Ackerman, MS!!

Layla I’m a little late to the comments and as much as I need some work in certain rooms of our house the thought of working with you to DIY-ify someone else’s space would be a dream come true. I can do almost anything you ask: build, paint, craft, sew, and on and on.

I’m in Westchester County, NY just outside of NYC on the Greenwich, CT border. Please add me to your “willing to help” list.

Option A please! My husband and I would love to have you come to our AZ home and help us out! We just moved to AZ last year and bought our first home in November. It’s a beautiful newer home in Goodyear, but we need your help! We feel we have some sense of design, somewhere down deep! The problem is we have no idea how to express it. We feel so blessed to have the house that we have, and therefore want to decorate accordingly to show it’s true beauty! The extent of our home decorating that we’ve done so far is buying the basic furniture and decorating with as many wedding gifts as we can (married less than 2 years). If we had to choose just one part of the house to have you come and work your magic in, it would be our Master Suite. This is where we spend the most of our time when we’re home. Since we don’t have any kids yet, we’d like to make this part of the house special and work for us before we have children to accommodate for. Please help us..pick us…pick us!!!

My mother would LOVE to have your help! Her house is in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA – she is finishing the basement to make a family room and guest room (she’s been saying for years she has no idea where the future grandchildren – “now now, I’m not pressuring you!” – will play without more living space).

But if you happen to be somewhere on the island of MAUI, HI I will be your right hand girl! I LOVE YOUR BLOG! I’m hooked! You are living my DREAM. I love your incredible eye for detail and your style. AMAZING!!

Anyhoo – like I said, if you happen to come to Maui, I’ll paint walls, sew curtains or pillows or whatever, I’ll do whatever you need . . . 🙂

LOVE this idea! Willing to help as well as have a room made over! I live in Green Bay, WI and we are in desperate need of a large basement re-do! We just moved here from Southern California and with my 3 little boys (and 1 big one) missing the beach, I would love to bring some of the southern california bungalow beach style to our playroom/t.v room/mommy’s office/guest bedroom!!

We would love to have you here in Cincinnati, OH!! Out house has many projects to choose from including a basement/playroom w/ guest bedroom, our family room and kitchen all need updating from the 80’s look. With 2 young kids and husband working full-time and getting his masters, the projects are slow to finish. My husband is very handy around the house, but projects take time (and money!). We have just started the adoption process so it would be great to have some of these projects started/wrapped up! Come on over!

Hi Layla!! We would LOVE to have some help with our home. One year ago we moved into farm house that is approximately 100 and some years old. It was built by my husbands great great grandfather. We even found an old piece of would he had signed years ago as we tore down a wall. We are in the process of remodeling while still trying to maintain some of the original qualities in the house. We have several rooms we have yet to conquer and would love your help. You actually helped me over a year ago do a redesign for the bathroom in our former house. We live in a small town right outside of Indianapolis Indiana. Please consider us. It has been my husband’s dream to one day own this family farm house…the dream has happened it just needs some TLC. 🙂

  47. Michele

    May 8, 2011 at 3:17 pm

Yessss!!! Maybe my house would actually have a finished room in it. Ahhh, the thought of talented interior designers having a go at my house is a dream. Plus I consider you both down-to-earth, realistic, practical, more like me, and I love how you repurpose things to make them beautiful. That would be great if you could start something like that. It would bring a lot of inspiration to people, even though you already do… But you might want to do it before you have kids as it will be a little harder to get up and go. <3
