Tobacco Barn Antiques in Asheville, North Carolina

Nov 18, 2010 By Kevin

Well, we’re all done shooting the cottage we’re staying at, and boy did we have fun photographing the place!  We finished up around noon today, so we decided to head over to Asheville and check out a place called “Tobacco Barn“.

It. Was. AWESOME!

And HUGE! 77,000 square feet, to be exact.

Within seconds of entering, I was mesmerized.

But as with most large, totally-inspiring-because-there’s-so-much-cool-stuff/potentially-creepy-if-there-happened-to-be-a-power-outage type places, my bizarro brain went straight from design mode to “I-think-I-might-have-vertigo” mode, and then back to design mode, as usual.

Case in point:

(Quick clarification: I woke up with my first case of vertigo one night 8 years ago, and ever since then, I’ve been sort of obsessed with thinking I’m going to have another “episode” at any moment. Dude! I’m not weird! It was scary! Okay, fine. I am weird- but vertigo really is scary!)

Anywho…Kevin finally came along and distracted me from my fluorescent light-induced panic attack/inspired-by-design moment.

We strolled around the store/continent together, with our heads angled away from the occasional flickering fluorescent light, and down at lots and lots of awesomeness instead…

I LOVED this set of swan’s, carved out of a single piece of wood…

Kevin snapped a shot of this old, blue bench because as he so eloquently put it as we were standing in front of it, he “loves anything bench-y and chippy”.

Yet another reason why I love him.

But since we’re in hardcore save-not-spend mode these days, all we bought was this little red bucket…

It’s exactly what we’ve been looking for to finish up our Christmas mantel!

Speaking of which, are you ready for our Holiday Home linky party on the 30th?

Hope so! We can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to over there!

that antique shop looks sinfully amazing! i wouldn’t have been able to restrain myself like you did.

OMG, the same thing happens to me (vertigo/dizziness/imbalance) when I am in places like that (even though I can’t resist them), and it is exacerbated by florescent/strobing lights. What a wonderful way to spend the day though. I am jealous.

Wow, that place is fantastic wish I lived near by.It must have taken a lot of willpower not to shop up a storm.

Would love to know next time you come through Asheville, if you would have time to meet! That would be fun. Last month I held a blogger brunch and my home and then we all went shopping at the Tobacco Barn. There were 15 of us from Tn, NC, SC and GA!

I read on your advertising section that you are not doing give-aways. THANK YOU! I have noticed that many of my favorite design blogs are turning to give-away blogs. They spend so much time selling their sponsors and announcing give-aways, then the winner of the give-away, and on and on, that they don’t share good information anymore. Than you for taking a different approach. I am tired of reading about give-aways!

      Nov 20, 2010 at 7:54 pm

I have noticed the same thing and find it sad as well as annoying. An occasional give-away is one thing but
some of my favorites are in constant give away, announce winner mode.

Love this site-it’s my first site visit every day…you two are so cute and talented too.

Asheville! Woohoo – I’ll be up there (from central Florida) for New Year’s Eve to see the Avett Brothers! Maybe I’ll have a chance to stop here, too…I love that piece with two drawers that looks like it would make an awesome kitchen island. 🙂

Oh I am so jealous! We went Ashville on our honeymoon…sweet memories. If you get a chance while you are in the beautiful state of NC, you should visit Highlands…gorgeousness everywhere there. Ok – enough tourism… I want the glass doored cabinet by the long green table you photographed (among other things in the photos above!). Can’t wait to see your cabin photo styling…will we have to wait until the fall and see them in the magazine?

I understand your fear of vertigo…I’ve had 2 episodes and they are horrible. Anyone who’s never experienced just it can’t understand what the feeling is like. The slightest feeling of dizziness and I’m grabbing for something to hold on to.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!! I’m not only excited that I’ve also been there–we went while vacationing in asheville this past summer. But I also found your panic attack/inspiration HILARIOUS and I can sympathize completely. I was over the top excited when we first walked in…and by the end I felt dizzy and funny and overwhelmed and i couldn’t look at another antique or i might die. I would love to go back!!

Thomas and I will have to plan a road trip. Tobacco Barn looks like the type of place you could get lost in for hours — treasures to be discovered in every nook and cranny. I’m so happy that you stuck to your priorities — saving for the future aka Little Palmer!

Hey sweet lady! I’ve had the vertigo thing and you’re right…it is wicked scary! I was afraid to move because things were spinning…well heck, they were spinning when I wasn’t moving, so I totally get ya on that one! 🙂
Way to go on the self control…..not sure I could have done that in there, way too many pieces of eye candy! (but a baby is more beautiful than anything in that whole 77,000 square foot of yumminess…good call on just buying the bucket) 🙂
I have my mantel all ready to go for your party….can’t wait! 🙂
    Have a good one!

Oh, my. Ohmyohmyohmy. I want to go there (too bad it’s on the other side of the country!)!!! I absolutely love the industrial table with the metal legs…it would make a perfect kitchen island (and this is coming from the only anti-kitchen-island woman in the country!).

I have been in a gazillion antique stores over the years. (My husband enjoys it with me)…but that one looked very interesting. We were in Ashville a couple of years ago, but never heard of that place. If we ever go back we will check it out. (I get dizzy in places like that sometimes too…I think it is just all of the stuff everywhere.)

Talk about a cool place, did you go to the Biltmore? It is amazing.

You are hilarious! I’ve been in there a lot right at closing, when I’m the only one in there and the sun is low in the sky…creepy in a wonderful history can talk kind of way.

So glad you both made it to TB!!!!! Pretty fantastical, huh?

Hope your drive back to ‘bama is safe!

My mom had vertigo years ago that was more pronounced with flickering fluorescent lights. I can’t recall if you ever got to the bottom of that situation, but I know for my mom they eventually decided a virus had settled on a nerve in her inner ear. She had to see about 10 docs who all insisted she was crazy before someone addressed what was really going on.

I love Asheville. Have never been to that store, but what a place. I so want a rustic farmhouse table like the one in your pic. Swoon.

Lady Layla – happy day to see some of my most favorite work distractions (e.g. the writers of TLC) in my cozy little mountain town! Gorgeous here, eh? Agree on the vertigo. I was last in the Barn when I was preggers and after dizzingly sauntering around, I threw up behind a lovely cast iron stove. Sad. But true.

So when you guys are in town again, please come stay at our little family “treehouse” just south of the city. Free place to stay: check
Two adorable little blonde girls to play with: check
Lots of walls to look at and inspire me with ideas for: absolutely check.
Watching snowfall by the chiminea, sipping lattes, and oggling the free stack of inspiring mags together: check
New great friendship to be made? Absolutely check.

Quick question for you… I know that since you’re pretty well-versed in antiques you’ll know what I’m talking about.

My mom and I are planning on taking a shopping trip to Charlotte and I wanted to maybe stop by here on the way back (we live in Virginia) but I was wondering– how reasonably priced is it? A lot of antique places are, but then some want $50 for a Mason jar, you know? 🙂 Just wondering your thoughts!

    Best wishes <3

That place was huge…makes me wish I lived in the south. We do not have wonderful, huge barns like that around here (Irvine, CA). 🙂 It’s fun to shop with you guys.

OMG! I LOVE that place…how fun to see you visit another one of my favorite places! My best friend took me there and I fell in love! (If you are still there, or when you go back, head over to Neo Cantina in the Biltmore Village for some awesome Southwestern food…his place is amazing!)
I could spend all day in the Tobacco Barn…so glad you discovered it and enjoyed it!

I love that place!! We went there this past summer. There were some really great antique stores right next door to it too, and we scored some great things there. When we were at the Tobacco Barn we saw Andie McDowell in the same booth as us. It seemed like she was there with her designer and they were discussing the various things they were going to take home. Must be nice to pick and choose and not be restrained by budget! But then again, sometimes that restraint makes us more creative right?

Beautiful blog. Beautiful place!! Reminds me of one place we went to in Newburyport Mass. In the middle of winter. Looking at our breath the whole time. So worth it.

I’m currently studying in Peru, which has lots of great ancient ruins but lacks a little on the antique stores. 🙂 Miss them.

This post caught my eye on the White X White blog! I was at the tobacco barn last month with some blogging buddies and we had a ball! It is a bit overwhelming though! You really need to go a few times just to look….and think about what you’ve seen! And then go back to shop! lol Hope you enjoyed Asheville! We love living there! ♥
