We decided to go with a metal headboard because we just didn’t want any of that glorious natural light to be blocked. (So many of the rooms in our house don’t get a lot of natural light because of the way (and where) it’s sitting. The master bedroom is the brightest room in the house, and we really wanted to try and keep it that way!) And while Pottery Barn’s Mendocino Bed was perfect design-wise, it definitely didn’t fit our budget…
A king-sized Mendocino Bed is $1,299.00, with a delivery surcharge of $100.00. However, the Kensington headboard, at JCPenney.com did fit our budget at just $149.99…
It was regularly $299- but it happened to be on sale the day we logged on to their website and spotted it. (I checked their website today, and it’s still on sale, but it’s $169.99 now for some reason.)
We didn’t want to have a footboard, but you can order one if you want to. The price is a little more for both the head & footboard, but still no where near the PB “Mendocino” price, and it’s practically the same bed! We ordered the headboard, and instead of paying $108 for shipping, we had it delivered to our local JCPenney for free.
We received a phone call from them about 7 days later, and believe it or not, we fit it into the trunk and backseat of our car- so we didn’t even have to borrow somebody’s truck to pick it up! We immediately took it out back and laid it on a big piece of plastic so I could spray paint it a color that coordinated with our room better.
Here are the before shots…
And thanks to some Rust-oleum “Oil Rubbed Bronze” spray paint courtesy of True Value…
About an hour later, it looked like this…
So here’s where we’re at today…
Obviously we still need a small pillow insert for the monogrammed pillow in front (it’s just leaning against a pillow form in the photos), a king-sized bedskirt, a big, puffy down comforter to stuff inside our duvet cover, and according to Kevin- a big, puffy featherbed to stuff underneath our fitted sheet.
But we’re getting there!
And that’s sayin’ a lot when you consider we not only got our king-sized headboard to fit into the trunk and backseat of our car- but we made it all the way home with two box spring mattresses strapped to the top of ol’ Red Rover too…

Looks like a million dollars – great job!

Hey there guys! Frequent reader, random commenter here. I was happy to pop over and comment on your behalf at Six Seeds and really, really look forward to following your adoption adventure! Please know we’re equally interested in your absolutely gorgeous, inspiring makeovers AND your gorgeous, inspiring family! Love to you both!
Jaimie MacGibbon
Wow! IT looks so awesome! I can’t wait to see the finished master bedroom! You guys are amazing!
Kristen
Did yall use a spray paint primer prior to the oil-rubbed bronze spray paint? I’ve been spray painting some brass door knobs around the house and I find having to use Multiple coats and still notice some scratch through. Wondering if primer would be better on that process.
Rachel Carey
I like your bed better, loads better! The room is fabulous AND there’s no doubt that you’ll be *approved* as parents, lol. Look at that spoiled doggy!
Kristin Since I’m in the metal finishing business, it’s a good idea to take a light sanding to any brass that has lacquer on it, then dry it off with a soft towel. Prime and Paint or use the 2/1 for those of you having difficulty getting the bright brass to *dumb down* when sprayed.
I’m chomping at the bit to spray my baldwin brass…ugh what was I thinking??????
Cheri
Great choice on the headboard — letting in maximum light is important!
Truthfully — I like your head board and room design BETTER than the PB picture!
So excited to follow your adoption process — we have many friends who have adopted — and my sweet brother-in-love is adopted too — we are especially happy to have him in our family!
Joanne
It looks amazing! I’m so excited, I bought a can of that Rustoleum on the weekend to paint a couple of items, I haven’t used it yet but I love the way your headboard came out!
Kim
A big BOO-YA on the bed! Fabulous work as usual. I am praying for your adoption to go smoothly and that God’s will be done. Faith, Hope and Love. You guys got it all. Less importantly, I CANNOT wait to see what you two do with a nursery!

The bed is soooo the same! Love the paint job makeover! Are those dropcloth curtains or are they something else? I’m dying to try them in my living room but I have all white in there and don’t know if that will be too much texture and linen color….what do you think? Or could I bleach them? Anyway, love the green that you are using.
Keep up the scheme…it’s looking great!!
Blessings!

I have to say…. It is a talent to get a head board, king mattress & boxspring and 2 excited adults ready to spray paint and design home in one trip in any car,
let alson a small car. (although I think you 2 would carry it if you ahd too)
Also have to say I love your head bored wayyyyyyyyyy better.
It has less do- dads/rails and looks like it allows more light to get in.
I can see it definately in white too. HMMMM. hehe
Love the room to pieces.
happy Turkey day! geri.

I can just see the soon to be three of you all cozied up reading a bedtime story in that gorgeous oh so comfy looking bed!

Lovely! Your bedding looks so beautiful together and your new headboard is fantastic in front of your windows!
Linda
love your bedding. Where did you get it?
All That Jazz Vintage
Wow that is fabulous! I LOVE the metal headboard. What a smart way to go, getting one from JCP and then painting it! Brilliant. I remember you having bedding with some red in it (from PB?) were you going to use that?
Happy Thanksgiving!!

Finding Home
Love the idea of a metal headboard in front of a window, I did the same in our guestroom. I actually found my similiarly priced at Pier 1. Great idea to spray it to the finish that you wanted. I think people often shy away from the idea of painting a brand new piece of furniture. Thanks for sharing!

W have the exact same headboard with the footboard from JC Penneys and we absolutely love it! Your paint job was a clever idea and turned out wonderful. I can’t wait to see the rest of your room. Good luck with your adoption process and have a nice Thanksgiving too!

I love it!!! Totally looks like the Real McCoy.
Also – I just left you 2 messages at Six Seeds, but didn’t see them post??? I’m hoping they posted…

Hi! I’m a random Canadian follower in love with your style and great attitudes to boot! Just wondering what exactly did you do to the bed before the ORB finish? Thank you!!! You guys will be the best parents ever! 🙂
Misty
So cute! I thought the bedding was plaid though…Either way, SO CUTE!

Absolutely love the bed with the ORB finish! The original kinda snakey-looking finish didn’t do much for me, but the after is wow! I love the total overall look!
Happy Thanksgiving!

i have hated our master bedrrom furniture since the day we bought it. seriously. (hubby picked it out, i gave in. make sense now? ok. *insert ‘that was stupid of me, embarrassed’ laugh here) anyhow, i’ve been contemplating painting it since we got it but it is so BIG, and HEAVY, and would just be alot more work than i think. because everything always is. ha. so i’m going to start scouring craigslist and JC Penney for a letal headboard only. yours looks AMAZING! and i’ve been drooling over a “Pottery Barn like” slipcovered sectional from JC Penney so maybe i can get a spend more, save more type discount. hahahahaha.
AND, adoption?! holy excitement Batman. i’ve been away from blogland for a while and boy (or, girl?) have i missed some exciting news! CONGRATULATIONS seems like an understatement, but CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! love being able to share in your excitement. keep us posted!
Laura
I chuckled at the thought of the home study person walking in the door and seeing the mattress on the dining room floor. I was GOING to say “glad you thought about that so you didn’t look like a bunch of hillbilly squatters”, but after seeing the picture of the mattresses on top of the car…I guess the jury is still out on that one! 😉 lol Love you guys!! and love your headboard too – amazing how similar in style yet different in price!
elz
Holy WOW! That looks just like the PB one. What a great idea and cheap transformation.
Tricia
Oh.my.goodness. I adore the headboard. I adore what you’ve done with your bedroom. Okay. Honestly, I just adore you guys, but anyway…
I had to laugh because the mattress and box spring strapped to the top of the little car is sooooo something that we would do. I can not tell you the things that my husband has strapped to the top of our minivan to bring them home.
Happy Thanksgiving to the both of you!

Brilliant — that’s exactly what I need for a bedroom in our beach house!

I like your version better! Beautiful room!

Holy Moly Batman! THAT LOOKS AMAZING!! Wow!!! That’s awesome! Question for you, would this work with white spray paint too? We are loooking for a headboard like this for my daughter but I want it white, what do you think would it work?
Anyway, I am personally so happy for your and your husband and honored to watch your family grow. Thank you for allowing us to share in a part of it!
Happy Thanksgiving!

Fabulous idea, thanks so much for sharing….now I know what to do with the twin metal head and footboard sitting in my garage that I picked up for five bucks 🙂 Your bedroom is coming together beautifully and I so look forward to seeing the finished product…as well as what is to come in the future for all your rooms! Thank you so much for the inspiration!!

I love the way your master bedroom is coming along. It’s been fun to follow the journey.
Ah man, I didn’t make it over to leave a comment on the Six Seeds site, but I’m glad so many others did. The blog world is so wonderful, isn’t it? I look forward to following, not only the journey of your ongoing renovation, but of your family as well. 🙂

It was still open…I went and left a comment. Two more bucks!

Oh wow…we actually bought a very similar headboard for our bed a few years ago…didn’t realize it was so much like the Pottery Barn one. The one we got is a Hammer Tone / Smoke Grey color already!
Check it out here…

I am loving your room! The headboard looks great!

Aww im so glad you went with the metal bed!! you’re right not to block any of the natural light, it looks like such a beautiful airy bright room. you did a fantastic job spray painting the frame, it ties in PERFECTLY with the curtain pole and creates a lovely contrast against the plank wall. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I AM DYING to see the completed room!! The very best of luck and best wishes for the adoption process, any child would be absolutely blessed to have parents like you-you are a breath of fresh air. 🙂
Allie
Was wondering where the new Pottery Barn bedding is from your mom? Thought that was the plan! 🙂
I love that stuff! If you’re not going to use, I will!! LOL 🙂

This post should answer your question Allie! 🙂

Love your bed. It reminded me of a show that was once on HGTV where they would take a photo of a room from a magazine or designer’s portfolio and recreate it for a fraction of the price. Can’t remember the name of the show, but I loved it. They should resurrect that show with you two as the hosts!
Nickie
It is amazing how much motivation the possibility of the pitter-patter of little feet can generate! I have two children and know that feeling all too well. Reading your blog today tells me you feel exactly the same way. Awesome.
Oh…and the room rocks too. Sorry.
Megan
We actually have this same bed frame in twins. We have two twin beds in one of our guest rooms. I LOVE the oil rubbed bronze spray paint…might just have to try that 🙂 The bedrom looks amazing…straight out of a magazine!
Dorothy
I like the Pottery Barn room, but I love, LOVE, LOOOOVVVEE your version! Just my colors and taste but you definitely know what you’re doing! What a beautiful space you’ve made.
Since you are such a smarty about all things decorating, I have a kinda related question: I want to use matchstick or similar blinds in our master bedroom. One of the windows shouldl be no problem, but on another wall we have a three pane patio door; do you know of any source or way to have blinds work on patio door panels? I haven’t seen matchstick blinds that long… I would love the way they’d look with curtains on either side. I’d love to know if I’m wrong-I sure hope so!
Kristi
Layla,
My basement is full of great things that I pick up along the way..plenty of inspiration, but I don’t always follow through! You make me want to grab some spray paint a hammer, nails and get busy transforming!!!!
The bed is fabulous!! Thankful for all that you share.
Kristi
Mary
We also have a J C Penny’s sale bed that was a much more affordable alternative to its designer counterpart. I didn’t even have to paint it because the color worked well. We have had it for five years and it looks as good as new. I hope you enjoy yours as much as we have! I enjoy your blog so much. Thank you!
