“Arranging a bowl of flowers in the morning sun can give a sense of quiet in a crowded day – like writing a poem, or saying a prayer.”
-Anne Morrow Lindbergh

I think the same goes for potting a plant.

What is it about sinking our hands into the soil, you know? 🙂
I got the basket on the far end of the shelf from my Mom a while back. Seems like I found it in her yard sale “sell” pile. Seems like I squealed, “Ooh! I want this!” when I saw it. Seems like she let me take it home for free. 😉 (Thanks again, Mom)

Since it was so close to the color of the shelf, we decided to give the bottom a coat of white spray paint. I covered the top half and the inside with a plastic sack, and sealed the bottom edge of the painters tape with some glazing medium in hopes of creating a nice, crisp line.

It worked!

I found the ($12) shelf several years ago at a flea market in Prattville, the “Be Kind” sign was made by my friend, Susie, and I made the shell art at my Mom’s house a few years back.

Got the cute little plant pot from my friend, Shannan, and the blue and white bowl is an old eBay find.

I’m thinking about painting the inside of the front door next. I used Photoshop to see what it would look like if I used a charcoal gray color:

What do you think? Should I go for it?

I love the color! I say go for it! Love your style by the way! Hope you are feeling much better. Think of you often and prayed for your silent reflux to be healed. Till next time….
Hi Layla, I like the painted door. I always love your style and am inspired by you!
Very sweet. Love the saying at the beginning of the article. May I ask what color of paint is on the walls? ❤️that grey.
I love it all. You are so talented. Love the idea of the inside of the door painted. Do it!!!
Absolutely! The grey looks fabulous! 😉
Your front door will look great painted!
I love the painted basket and would love to hear more about your process – the idea to paint the basket is brilliant and so simple! I would have avoided using the basket because it matched the shelf and you switched it up!
Change is good…I say go for it!!
I was so happy to “see” you here this morning….I love everything about you and your style, El! But I sure wasn’t expexting to see my name pop up!!
I’m reading Gifts From the Sea right now. What a stunning book.
And yes, go for the gray!!!!!
XO
i think the door looks great painted darker – it really pops!
Definitely paint the door! There’s nothing I love more than painted doors, it adds a fun pop of color!
I love the shelf and the plants as well, greenery adds life to a space. Beautiful job!
Can’t wait to see how things are looking in the newly defined living room space. ☺️
The gray looks fabulous and so does your styled shelf. I love how plants make a space come to life.
Go for it!! I just painted the inside of my front door Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!! (My door is very similar to yours but with sidelights on either side.)
Definitely paint the door… LOVE the basket.
FOR SURE paint the door.. LOVE the basket..LOVE EVERYTHING about your HOME.. ♡
I say yes to the door! Your basket looks great and I love how you styled your shelf.
Yes, yes, paint the door – especially since you’ll have little hands leaving wonderfully dirty fingerprints all over the lower part of it very soon! God bless!
yes, paint the door! room looks GREAT!
LOVE everything, but can’t get past the fact that you got that shelf for $12!! What a find!
To be honest I didn’t even notice the door in your first photo and I guess that begs the question….do you want the door to blend in and just be functional or do you want to decorate it and draw more attention to it?
I think the painted one looks great, I love the colour you have chosen, it works so well with your dresser and shelf.
Hi Layla! I’ve been following your blog for several years & you & I seem to be twins in terms of our decorating taste. I literally just planted some indoor pots yesterday! In regards to your door color, I painted the inside of my entry door a charcoal color & it looks nice but I have regretted the “vibe” of it. I am wishing I would’ve chosen a happier color for my door. I love charcoal gray in the right places but I wish I had done that differently. My two cents. Katie K.
Yes to the door! I can’t believe you got that wonderful shelf for $12. The basket is great. The blue/white bowl and the green pot are great. Susie’s sign is fabulous. And I LOVE your style. BUT every time I see that you have a new post I get excited thinking that maybe Sweet Pea is coming home. I don’t even know you, but I am so emotional about your adoption. I can’t imagine how you and your husband can bear the waiting.
Definately paint it! I have the same color walls – 50% Gray Owl (I saw it here first 😉 and painted the inside of my front door as well as all of my interior doors Urbane Bronze from Sherwin Williams. I love it – so rich looking!
So pretty! I say go for it with painting the door! 🙂 Of course, I would do a bright color… maybe yellow or red. But gray will look really nice too.
Yes, paint the inside of the door! Love your shelf and your mom for giving you that sweet basket.
Where did you get the “be kind, work hard” sign? Love it!
Hi Leta! I got it from my friend, Susie. You can click on her name in the post and it’ll take you to her blog. 🙂
Love it all! Your home looks like such a happy place with a big dose of sunshine. 🙂
Yes to painting the door! Love it!
Most def!!
Yes, to painting the door! I painted the interior of our back door grey and love it! As I always say, “it’s only paint, if I don’t like it, I’ll repaint”.
You just have the best color choices. I wouldn’t have picked the gray since I love all the light colors but it anchor’s the space perfectly. So YES to the door!!!!!!!!!
I have no style, at least compared to you, but I’m not loving the grey. How about blue? Like a denim blue? Never mind. I always love what you choose. Carry on..
Oh yes, paint the door! I was wondering about your plants: how do you deal with drainage in those pots?
I love the new walls dividing the living from dining rooms. The basket is great. Actually love it all.
Go Grey!!!
Pretty vignette in your dining room. Yes, paint the door!
TWELVE!! ohmydog, i can’t believe that fantastic shelf only cost you $12. what a great find. how wonderful!
never in a million years would i have considered painting the door that color, but YES! seems as though it would be gorgeous…a lovely contrast.
i just realized i typed wonderful in the first paragraph. totally leaving it.
happy day, my invisible internet friend. enjoy!
(i have no clue why your filters keep saying my comments are spam?)
did you change spam filters recently?
Go for it! You have the best ideas.
Hey, several months ago I told you how my husband and I took your husband’s photography class to shoot pictures of my workshop for Wood magazine’s America’s Best Home Workshops. The magazine finally came out, if you’re in a Home Depot, Lowe’s or Barnes and Noble check it out, it starts on page 54.
i love that you painted only the bottom portion of the basket, it looks great. Love the shelf too. Yes, paint the door grey. It looks amazing.
Do it! I painted my backdoor that color and I think it was one of the best decor ideas I’ve had.
Do it! I just discovered Sherwin Williams at my local Lowes and used their dark gray shade “Peppercorn” on a pair of end tables. So lovely, highly recommend!
I love the bright white as it is, but the charcoal is great, too. Always love what you do! 🙂
BTW, wondering if the blue plant pot is a McCoy piece. (I have a few McCoy pottery pieces which are special to collect since my maiden name is McCoy. ;-))
I painted the inside of our front door purple several months ago. Love it. The outside color has to remain neutral per HOA rules, so I’m expressing my creativity inside. Warms up the foyer as well as adding a eye catching point from views from the great room and hallway.
I love the idea of the door being painted. The gray pics up on the tile..
Just this morning I thought about painting the inside of an exterior door (to be replaced one of these days anyway.) Must be “paint the door” day.
Yes! Go for it!
absolutely…I used hats for Easter baskets one year..a Hawaiian one for my son, my beach hat for myself, and my husband’s cool straw hat for his..it reminded me of a nod to the Easter Parade of yesteryear.
Then we posed with them, empty of the candy but not the grass to make a most memorable fun photo..my idea..they did only because they love me..lol
Was just thinking of painting our back door a gray color on the interior. I love the Photoshop paint job. Go ahead and pull the trigger! It’s going to look gorgeous.
I adore that shelf and just love the basket with the white bottom.
I’m sure what ever you do with the door will be spectacular. You have such great vision
I painted the inside of my front door about a month ago—Peppercorn by Sherman Williams!! Funny to see it listed above! Go for it!
