I put a propeller on it, y’all.
The gallery wall, I mean. Haven’t you heard? Propellers are the new birds. 😉
I found it marked 50% off at Hobby Lobby, and I practically skipped up to the register with it because AREYOUKIDDINGME?! It’s almost the same tone as the frame I blogged about last week…
…AND if fits in with our coastal/great outdoors vibe so perfectly, AAAAAAND it has a blue-gray patina on it!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!!! 😀 (I’m so glad you understand how exciting these kinds of things can be- ha!)
To hang it, we started by measuring how far we wanted it to stick out from the wall. After that, we painted 5 inches of a wooden dowel to match our wall, and used a jigsaw to cut off the painted part.
We made sure to use a dowel that fit inside the hanger on the back of the propeller:
Next, we drilled a hole in the wall (a little smaller than the dowel) where we wanted to hang the propeller…
…and then we hammered the dowel into the hole.
We hung the propeller on the dowel and I used a dollop of hot glue to make sure it stays in place. (It’s super light-weight)
My friend Ruthie is helping me with the next piece this grouping, and I’m looking forward to sharing a post about that once I’ve got it hung up! XO
PS- Speaking of sweet Ruthie, she’s doing a “herd dispersal” over in her Etsy shop this week. 25 cutie-pie cows are looking for homes, and I sure wish they could all come home with me! 😀
How fun! I love the dimension that it adds to the gallery wall. After rearranging my living room last week, I’m working on decorating a wall, too. I am now convinced the next piece needs to be 3D. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Love it! So clever. ?
I’m totally on board with the idea of personalizing one’s house! I would not, however, have thought of hanging something like a propeller! Genius!
Finding some inspiration from this little propeller! As we renovate, we want some fresh looks for our wall art gallery. Thanks for sharing. Linda
LOVE IT! It looks so good and fits in perfectly like you said. I’m really loving the layered gallery wall idea. And I love, love, love the art that’s surrounding it!
Did I mention I love it? lol. 🙂
I wish my mind would work as good as yours. You are so creative!!! Love the propeller! And I am checking out Ruthie’s cows 🙂
This wall of yours just gets better and better. Great eye! I have a gallery wall in my dining room and have chosen things that are 3-D. I started in the middle with a very large antique chalk tile from a fireplace in Denver of a mountain scene, balanced it with 2 Hobby Lobby pedestal shelves that have small American Indian pots on them right now. Under those pedestals, I have very old clay Mexican bowls that hang from wire. Above those shelves I have 2 little framed art pieces. One is from a bird book from 1928 of Desert Quail. The other is an estate sale find – a pen and ink drawing of Monument Valley. Above it all, centered over the tile, is a print from the Grand Canyon of a cowboy on his horse. It’s my Arizona Wall. Some of my friends from the East say, “too much stuff”. But it’s a big wall and I like to have things to look at while dining. Once again, Home Depot’s BEHR paint color “Beach Grass” is the perfect backdrop to anything I hang on it!
I love this little propeller! Your gallery wall is looking rather awesome – so much inspiration hanging there. Can’t wait to see the next addition! 🙂
Thank you, Tonya! I’m looking forward to seeing it too! 😀
love your vision and sense of fun! this is wonderful!
Gotta keep it fun, right? 😀
I wouldn’t have thought of a propeller! But seeing it in place it’s sorta like, “Uh, yeah, what else would go there?!” Totally perfect. Love the problem solving you guys came up with to give it some dimension, too. XOXO, Abby
Ha! Thanks, Abby! 😀
that is the cutest thing ever .I can see why you love it .I would too. being a lover of ALL things beachy .I love this wall for sure .if you could just “sea” my house .I have glass bowls full of shells .sand ,pearls .little creatures from the sea .I painstakingly hot clued a million shells to a 4 foot mirror .it took me about 2 weeks and lots of blisters .but I love it so. thanks for sharing your new find .enjoy 🙂
Oh, wow! That sounds like an AWESOME project, Mattie! 😀
Boy that painting you did gets around. Sure would be nice if you did a full view on your photos instead of small snippets.
Looking forward to sharing a photo of the whole grouping once I’ve got the 3 final pieces up, Alison. 😉
Looks really sweet.. But is it sharp?? The blades would scare me a little..
Hi Maggie!
The edges are smooth, and rolled. You can see what I mean in the 4th photo in this post. 😉
I thought for sure you salvaged it when I saw it! Who knew Hobby Lobby would have such hidden treasures! 😉 Looking forward to the next piece!
Gosh . . . You have great vision!!!! This is GREAT! I LOVE Ruthie’s cows! Too adorable . . . I need to save up for one! XO
What a perfect addition to your grouping. I love when I “happen” upon something that is just the ticket – sometimes even when I didn’t know it until I saw it : ) Happy weekend!
Love it! Your wall is looking amazing. The layered effect just adds so much character.
I rescued a beautiful solid brass propeller from a local scrap yard last year (Paid them for the value of the brass) It is way too heavy to hang, but I have plans to add it to the shelves in Dillon’s study with a few other ocean (more than nautical) themed prints, maps etc for the walls to remind him of his seaside (surfing, fishing, diving) upbringing.
Would love to see the whole room and how it looks with the gallery wall. You. Have amazing style and I can’t get enough of it. Thanks for inspiring.
Thank you, Mary! 😀 And I look forward to sharing a photo of the whole wall once the grouping is done. Three pieces to go! 🙂
Love most everything you post, but this in particular. I have fond memories of vacationing at a lake in NC when I was a child. Want to continue decorating with my cottage style, but add more memories that make me smile. Oh and the number 2 is my thing too! Thanks for your wonderful posts. They make my day.
I can so relate to your thrill of finding that propeller! Sometimes I think I’m just crazy ~ then I read posts like this and know my “people” are out there 🙂 Visual interest, patina, quirky…what’s not to love about propellers on a wall?!
