Front Door Colors

Mar 31, 2015 By Layla

Two-story Blue (a.k.a- our besties house across the street) is getting a new exterior door color! It’s currently a purple-y shade of brown:

Blue Shotgun House

The question is: which one?

Not a fan of the cherry at all. So surprised it’s leading right now. I like the Cranberry, Gray or Sage. The others look so random to me.

I voted for cherry because it really pops against the blue. I agree with the others who said only to paint the front door. Too me, it would lose it’s “wow” appeal if both doors were painted.

Dark lime…..But I am partial to lime as I have lime green Palm tree cutout shutters on my house.

The Cherry, Cranberry, and Fuchsia are at odds with the orange tones of the pine straw and the building to the left. Yes, it caught my attention! lol

And though the yellow and the grays work well, the greens have vitality. The sage not so much, but the Grass Green, Dark Lime and the Lime all add a WOW factor. The Dark Lime being my favorite.

Can’t wait to see which color the besties pick!

I voted for Charcoal…I also like the cranberry, but am fighting “swimming with the tide”, just because I am contrary!;-) Also, have you thought of a less “sunny”, more mustard-y, yellow; or a darker “egg yolk” color? It would brighten up the exterior during winter. Since paint is an easy fix, any color that Suzanne loves is the “right” color! Will be fun to see the result.

Cherry is pretty but so common. I like a green.

I like the cranberry or gray. I agree that putting a bright color on the upstairs door will detract from the front door ‘pop’. Leave it white.

It’s actually the same shade of purple-y brown as the downstairs door right now, Jan.

I’m torn. Such a beautiful house and the colours of the garden work really well with the cherry, cranberry and both limes. I love colour coordinating, but the seasons change. So I put the charcoal to be safe. 🙂 What a great idea!

Hmm thinking I like fushia…and yellow!! I like the pop but not too overwhelming.

Is there a website that you used to change the door colors? I need to do this for my house! I am a visual person–I can’t picture it in my mind…I have to actually SEE it.

I like the Dark Lime because it matches the trees in the background. It really sings to me!

I love the yellow door. I have a grey/blue house and painted mine Ben Moore Dahlia. It is so happy!

Love the cranberry. It is almost identical to the color of our front door, (our house is also a very similar shade of blue).
The cranberry is very warm, and nothing, in my opinion, says welcome, come on in, like a red front door! The color of our paint is called “cherry brown”, but it is pretty much the same shade as what is being described as cranberry in the photo choices. People know our house as the blue colonial with the red front door.

    Hello Layla,
Did you try a warmer Brown ? Besides I voted Cranberry.

Coral? So sorry to bring one more colour…

My first thought was cherry but I think the yellow door plays with the yellow shrub by the front door quite nicely thereby connecting the home to the garden. Planters with yellow flowers could be lovely whereas the red door would have to stand alone, in my opinion. Jody

I know this might be too boring, but I think white would look classic 🙂

Gray, bright lime, and sage are my favorites! I also like the cranberry color for the front door, but noticed you wrote the upper door would be painted the same shade so it seems something less bold would be more appropriate. Excited to see the end result as really any shade would look beautiful!!!

I’m surprised, but I keep coming back to the yellow and I love the way it pulls out the yellow in the bush out front!
After that I like the gray…from one extreme to the other:)

Hi, Layla! I may have missed where you referenced it (sorry!), but can you share what app you’re using to change out the colors? I’m thinking of changing the color of our house shutters and that app would be great to really visualize what looks best. Thanks!

      Hi Ali!

I use Photoshop to change out the colors. I teach a class over at ShootFlyShoot.com called “Room Makeover” if you’d like more info! XO

To me, the sage looks happy without being as jarring as some of the other colors.

I like Cranberry best, second choice is Sage.
