Mar 31, 2015 By Layla

Two-story Blue (a.k.a- our besties house across the street) is getting a new exterior door color! It’s currently a purple-y shade of brown:

Blue Shotgun House

The question is: which one?

Cherry or grass green. They both stood out to me in the grouping before you broke it down individually. Love that home.

Cherry or dark lime. Also like the sage or the charcoal if one were playing it safe. 🙂 the cherry stands out and I love greens so the dark lime. (I think “Kristins” agree on the cherry.) I can’t wait to paint our front door a shade of green when we paint our house. Sooooo excited!! A whole outdoor redo in the backyard and house painted!!!

My first choice would be a dark charcoally blue. Then it would be a true Two Story Blue! You could do a accents of lime green with a door mat, cushions on the chairs or planters. My second choice would be the cherry red.

I had to commit to one, but hands down, any of the greens.

grass green… but it was close with other greens. At least it related to the shrubs. the other colors did not relate to anything.. if there were more of the cranberry color in the landscape ( hard to tell how much) that would be better… but a random color on a mid-to light value color did not look right.

Our house is the same blue color, and we painted our door yellow, with the lines in the middle (I’m totally blanking on what they’re called) painted the same color as the trim on the windows. (Ours is white, but theirs looks to be offwhite or tan, maybe?)

    Cranberry is my first choice
    Charcoal is second choice

Or- a second vote for yellow- BM Hawthorne Yellow looks great with blue

I like the cherry and the charcoal. My front door is cranberry, but maybe it needs a coat of one of those bright green colors!

I am always a sucker for a red door. But I also liked the pop you got with the yellow.

Sage and add another wicker rocker with pillows that bring out the sage…. then put the fern in the middle of the two chairs.

Wow! Hard to pick just one. I like cherry, grass green, and gray.

I’m not surprised that most are voting for cherry or cranberry. You see a lot of red doors, but the greens are really unexpected. Yellow is the most welcoming color for a front door. My choice would have to be bright lime. It has a lot of yellow in it. It screams, I’m one of a kind. It’s totally original. I bet there won’t be another house on the street with that door.

Oh and it totally picks up the colors in the shrubs.

I agree with you, Carol! Be different, do the unexpected, stand out!!!!

    Cranberry!

I wish I knew your besties, as I think their personalities should be factored into the colour choice.

The gray is very nice and could be paired with soooo many seasonal accessories. It also sort of draws the eye to the chairs in the corner. The sage green has an elegant flair, but the lime greens are FUN! The cranberry is also a pretty yet interesting contrast, but…

What sorts of flowers does your neighbour like to plant? Or does she not have flowers? What sorts of patio furniture pillows does she like? Or does she not accessorize the space at all, thus the door will be the “splash of life” in the space?

    Hmmm, good options.

I would have chosen a darker yet bright shade of blue to compliment the siding.

    no orange?

    • Layla

Nope. They’re Alabama University fans. 😀 (Auburn University’s colors are blue and orange.)

I can’t choose between cherry and cranberry. They both look good with the color of the house.

When I saw that you said there would be 2 doors painted (one on each floor) I went with cranberry instead of cherry. I want to be drawn in by the color…lots of great choices!!

  21. NancyB

    Apr 1, 2015 at 9:26 am

I went with the grey and then would add pops of color with her chairs and table…I am over doors in bright reds, greens, and yellows. They are everywhere!

tough choice! i love the cherry, but i also love that sage. and yellow makes me happy.

The cherry but it needs an American Flag flying from the porch!!

  25. Laura

    Apr 1, 2015 at 9:35 am

I like the ones that relate to something in the landscaping. There are several choices like that. Otherwise, it becomes another element competing for attention rather than completing the overall picture.

This is so out of the ordinary for me but the fuchsia is my favorite! Add in some matching flowers in the front bed and the house will look fab! But I like the yellow and dark lime too.

  27. Jennifer

    Apr 1, 2015 at 9:43 am

Cherry, Cherry, Cherry!! And I’m not even into red doors that much–but I’ve always loved the red and light blue combo. Definitely CHERRY.

  28. Judi

    Apr 1, 2015 at 9:45 am

I like the fushia the most.

Would love to know manufacturer and name of ‘Cherry. Always have loved a red door!

    • Layla

      Apr 1, 2015 at 10:25 am

Oh, there’s no manufacturer. It’s just a color I grabbed from the color wheel in Photoshop, Lauren. 🙂

So many choices!! My top three are Cherry, Dark Lime & Yellow now I voted yellow but those three were my favorite.

Cherry – because I have a thing for red doors and the brighter red suits your home
Dark Lime – It accentuates your shrubbery and brings nature and your door alive
Yellow – I simple adore the yellow with your painted blue home and it says spring and welcome to my home

Thanks for including us in the decision!! 🙂 can’t wait to see the final choice!

What a fun way to pick a door color. I love the grass green or either of the limes.

What a fun post…I look forward to seeing which color they choose!
Am I the only one, but when I’m thinking about front door colors, I also think about how the color of the door will blend with the colors of the room it opens into, whether that’s a foyer, living room, kitchen, etc.

I chose the Cherry.. i would love to have seen Navy as well

    • Layla

      Apr 1, 2015 at 11:17 am

Thanks, Kimberly! I did play with navy, but it never did look right and Suzanne recently told me she isn’t a navy person! 😀

      • Sylva

        Apr 2, 2015 at 7:52 am

Another suggestion: Crimson ( yes… that Crimson)
What does Suzanne have against sailors?

        • Layla

          Apr 2, 2015 at 10:44 am

Nothing against THE Navy, Sylva. The COLOR navy just isn’t one of her favorites. 🙂

Cranberry, please! Hmmm, maybe I should paint my own front door!

  38. Mary Moessinger

    Apr 1, 2015 at 12:12 pm

Layla, how did you change the door colors? Photoshop? I have a red front door on my creamy brick house and would love to paint it a different color b/c it has been red for 11 yrs and I need a change. Thanks!

I can see why cherry is winning in votes, because it is something people are comfortable with and have seen over and over. I prefer to go out on a limb where the limes are! It would give the house a more fresh, updated look instead of merely a safe (yawn) color.

  40. Debi

    Apr 1, 2015 at 12:32 pm

Cherry, charcoal, grey in that order.

  41. Krista

    Apr 1, 2015 at 12:37 pm

I voted for sage, but if I could have given a vote to all of the greens I would have! Blue and green is one of my favourite combos, and the green picks up so nicely on the shrubs and trees surrounding her house. What a cute house you get to look out your front windows at! Your whole street must be lovely with houses like yours and your friend’s 🙂

My vote is for gray. I like the way the gray pulls the house and porch colors together and creates a ver clean and inviting look. Color can come from a more colorful wreath on the door, plants on the table and cushions on the chairs.

Awesome way to choose a color! I voted for Fucshia…although I would have leaned more to a bright coral myself. Can’t wait to see what to see the final decision!

    Cherry, bright lime or yellow!

  45. Lorrie

    Apr 1, 2015 at 1:45 pm

For a “pop” affect I’m diggin the Cherry, but there is something so serene about the Charcoal and blue combo!

Grass green times ONE MEEEELLLION. In the tiny stills (it’s the one on the far left on the lower row, isn’t it? ISN’T IT?!) and in the big pictures, clearly the best.

Interesting article on this at http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/6861936/list/how-to-choose-a-front-door-color – or maybe just interesting to me, because I may have responded in the comments to every single person who said, “Hey, what about my front door…” 😀

Bright Lime – not only my favorite color, but a HAPPY color! Also, not too traditional.

  48. Robyn

    Apr 1, 2015 at 2:22 pm

So fun! I love the pop of color.

I wouldn’t however do the upstairs door the same color. I think it will detract from the overall cohesiveness of the home and the focal point of the front door. Too distracting for the eye. Highlight the eye or the lip, the legs or the bust type of thing. 🙂

I’d like to see more people break out of the overdone trend of red front doors. I hope they try something different and stand out from everyone else. It’s only paint, right? 🙂

i think you should definately go with the cherry red door. it makes a real impact and statement for the house
