The Kids Room – Flooring

Mar 12, 2011 By Layla

Yesterday was such a roller coaster of emotions.

First, channel after channel of horrifying earthquake and tsunami footage. So, so scary and sad.  I just stood there praying and watching in shock until it was time for me to head over to Ashley’s house. She, Shaunna, Rhoda and I had plans to visit Ikea and meet The Pioneer Woman at Borders Books in Atlanta. I’ll post more about our trip later this week-  but in a nutshell, we had a really, really fun time and Ree was an absolute delight!

This morning, I just sort of felt like I was in a daze from all the up and down rollercoaster action yesterday. And I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m feelin’ delirious- I gotta do something productive with my hands to calm down the ol’ nerve center up top.

So this afternoon, I broke out the Varathane applicator/shepherd’s staff again, and finished sealing the recently-sanded floor in the kids room.

Here’s what the room looked like when we bought the place back in ’07…

We got rid of the carpet, curtains, and wall color right after we moved in- and for the past few years we’ve just used it as a computer room/storage space.

We also used it as a mystery room.

You know- the room your guests wonder about because the door is always closed when they come over, but they’re sweet enough not to ask about because they’re smart enough to know the door must always be closed when they come over for a reason.

Redoing this room has been on the back burner for several reasons, for so long, but we’re really looking forward to creating a low-dough/high-smile room for two in here over the coming months. And I gotta say, I’m really looking forward to ditchin’ the mask in the near future too.

It was so scary & heart-wrenching to watch. My uncle was on a layover in Japan and his flight took off just an hour before the quake. I just can’t believe all the destruction! So I re-arranged my baby’s room today…something about doing something for kids that makes me feel better when the world just doesn’t seem fair. I have a mystery room too 😉 lol

That room looks pretty big to tackle. You are soooo lucky to have wood floors. Is that the last of the floors that you will have to do (or are there other mystery rooms to see?) We have the mystery garage.
Can’t wait to hear about your Atlanta trip!

    Layla,
I so enjoy your blog. What is the color of the kid’s room? I like it and I am looking for a color for our master bedroom.

I’m so envious that you got to hang with Rhoda, Ashley and Shaunna AND you got to meet Ree AND go to Ikea. I’m just green over here…but in a nice way. 🙂 The room is looking good.

Wow…I agree about the roller coaster ride of a day on Friday with the Japan tragedy! It was just heartbreaking…

I can’t wait to see how the children’s room turns out! Oh- and I can’t wait to hear about your meeting Ree, too! 🙂

I love you guys and think you are not only awesome decorators/bloggers but faithful as well!!

Gretchen beat me to the punch but I gotta echo her….what color is the paint….so pretty! And the floors and turning out gorgeous as well….can’t wait to see what you do with the space!

I saw this blog post: http://willows95988.typepad.com/tongue_cheek/2011/03/home-for-children-.html and felt the immediate urge to adopt a child from Thailand…whatever child finds his or her way to your home will be lucky indeed…I hope your wait is not too long.

Ralph Lauren’s “Sisal”, available at Home Depot. Or at least it was when we painted that room three and a half years ago! 🙂

“Mystery Room”. Love that. We called ours the Swiss Army Room while we had it (it’s a playroom now).

It’s comforting to know that you have a “junk” room too 🙂 Our junk is nomadic, it travels from room to room as we work on them. The floors are looking great! I like that you’re going with the natrual color and not staining.

I am new to your blog and a recent home buyer! You are our go to! We love it! Thank you for all that you share. Thank you for the inspiration! What kind of wood are the floors in your house? What stain are you using? Is it all just the natural wood sealed? Or did I see a dark kitche? What did you stain the dark rooms with? Thank you, monica
