Remember how the top of our stairwell looked when I started thinking about how we could personalize it back in January?

And remember this inspiration drawing I Photoshopped together for my Stairwell Decorating Ideas post back in February?
Well, not long after I posted that pic, I was able to partner with the folks who make that console (Ballard Designs), and I’m so excited to share some photos of things are looking up there as of today!
The console is called the Lungarno Console, and apparently they’re each made by hand in Italy, so the process took four months from start to finish. It was totally it worth the wait though, and I’m pumped to have some more storage at the top of the steps.
It’s sitting right there between the door that leads to our bedroom (the blue one), and the door that opens to Sweet P’s room (the sliding one).
The finish I chose is called Off-White over Spa, and I absolutely love it! Such sweet little antique brass details, too…
As for the other “stuff”- the little green lantern is from Ikea (I stuck a small jar in it so that it could act as a vase), the mirror came from Grandin Road, and the rope lamp came from the friendly folks at Land of Nod. I had planned to use it in Sweet P’s room, but I just love the way it looks out here! 😀
(Especially when it’s paired with hydrangeas! Thank you, neighbors Kathy and Gayle! XO)
I’ve still got to dress the windows in this area (they’re still sporting paper shades), and then (at some point) I’ll move on to personalizing the stairs (the treads are still stained orange-y oak and the risers are still painted Manchester Tan). One thing at a time though…I’ve got something fun cooking in the kitchen right now. It’s not food…it’s furniture, and I’ll be back on Wednesday with some pics of what I’m up to down there! 😀
PS- We tried out the rug I used in my inspiration pic, but it didn’t look quite right and it felt like a trip hazard, so we nixed that idea and we’re just going to go rug-less!

Layla, that’s one amazing spot! I love that what you envisioned came out so well!
Thank you, Stacey! XO
Looks super cute up there! Honestly, I like it without the rug better and knowing how I am, I’d probably trip over it too. LOL Show off those purty floors! 😉
Thank you, Anele! 😀
Whenever I see your redecorating posts, I heave a sigh of relief. Honestly so pretty and so much my taste.
Smart about the rug, too. We don’t even have any rugs in our kitchen. For one thing, I like our cherry floors. And for another, with my big family, I’ve found the easiest way to keep the floor clean is to spritz a cloth with diluted bleach (very diluted) and rub it around the kitchen with my foot. I just rub away all the spots, the kitchen smells like I spent all day cleaning, and the floor looks great for very little effort.
Have a blessed week. Praying for you as you await your little one. It’s like being pg, but you’re not quite sure of the due date.
Thank you so much, Laura!
SUCH a great idea about the diluted bleach, too. Thank you for that…and the prayers for Sweet P! XO
Everything looks gorgeous! That Ballard Designs console looks like it was made for that spot. We have nightstands from there (actually they were made as file cabinets with magazine racks on the sides and a lift-out tote tray…perfect for nightstands! I LOVE Ballard Designs!)
The quilt on the rail is the perfect touch of cottage and really cozies everything up.
I especially love how simple and clean you’ve kept everything. I’m trying (and failing miserably) to go a little sparser in my house, but after 40 years of marriage we’ve collected a lot of things we love!)
Thank you, Deborah! I love Ballard Designs, too!
And I have really enjoyed the process of downsizing into this home. It’s 200 square feet smaller than our previous home, so it felt good to get rid of a bunch of “stuff” when we moved in! 🙂
Love to see the changes you are making in your house. I love the console, but am really in love with your blue door too!
Thank you, Dawn! 😀
Absolutely in love! It looks great, and I bet it will be super helpful to have extra storage at arms reach from the little’s room.
Thank you, Mary! Yes- I’m sure the console will come even more handy when he’s home! 🙂
Beautiful! I LOVE the door! That’s so neat!
Thank you, Lisa! XO
I absolutely LOVE this look. Amazing use of the space and a wonderful transformation!!
Thank you, Julie! 😀
OMGosh Layla . .this looks gorgeous! Love everything! The lantern/vase idea is genius! XO
Thank you, Donna! XO
Hi Layla, I love what you’ve done with your stairwell and how you’ve brought your vision to life! I’m not sure if I missed it in a previous post but I just love the blue ceiling I got a peek of in Sweet P’s room and am wondering if you could share the paint colour with me. I’ve got various swatches on my own ceiling and none of them seems quite right. You have just the look I am going for. Thanks, Nicola
Thank you, Nicola! Here’s a link to my post about the ceiling:

🙂
Thanks very much, I’ll give it a try!
Wow, that is so close to your inspiration! It’s really cool!
Thank you, Lryna! 😀
Smiling, I thought you had a mural on that landing and thought, “What a great idea, I could do that.”
Hi Lynda! Do you mean the quilt? That would be a cool mural! 😀
The space looks lovely, Layla. I remember your initial sketch with the old-fashioned door concept and I think everything turned out beautifully and so close to your original vision.
Love the Palmer and Co etching on the door.
The small console really adds an attractive and unexpected storage spot too.
Thank you, Lisa! XO
Wow! Looks awesome. You are so talented. You also change the wall color? What is the new color? Love it!
Thanks, Carol Jane! Here’s a link to my post about the paint: https://theletteredcottage.net/stairwell-makeover/ 😀
Thanks Layla, Found it. Gray owl 50%.
I love the shade of blue on your bedroom door. Could you tell me the brand and the color’s name?
Thanks, Pam! Here’s a link to my post about the hallway door: https://theletteredcottage.net/hallway-door-makeover-part-2/ 🙂
So crazy how different the space looks from the before pic! Love this little nook.
Thank you, Molly! 😀
From builder fine to decorator fabulous! Love it.
It looks so beautiful, very crisp and clean. And the door…I am in love with the DOOR. Gorgeous color and lettering.
swoon…
I just love your landing area. How cozy it is all becoming. You have such a cute blog and I love watching all your updates! You give me such inspiration!
Where did you get the decal for your glass door? LOVE!
Thanks!
Tammy
I can’t decide what I like best–the console, the lamp, or the mirror–maybe the magic is in the combination.
LOVIN’ WHAT YOU DID WITH THE TOP OF YOUR STAIRCASE! PERFECT! And, Congrats! MUCH NICER even than your photoshop idea illustration! Just love that “Palmers” etc PALE BLUE DOOR with the frosted window . . . keep going!
You are amazing.
Gorgeous, Layla! Your home is all really coming together and I love how your doing it in your own time. I always love popping in for a visit. x
Thank you, Danielle! XO
You are so freekin talented. I have been following you for quite awhile now and i always look forward to seeing what u guys r up to. Seeing your post is like a sweet spot in my day. 🙂
Very cute! Went to the site and checked out the furniture. Too pricey for me but it’s always nice to have options to go to!
Love that lamp…very cute!
This has to be one of my very favorite spaces !!!… Just love that fabulous door too!
Fantastic transformation. I have no words for how amazing that lamp is. I’m suddenly looking around the house to see where I could put one just like it.
It looks so wonderful, you guys have done a awesome job! You always have the right touch and soo inspiring! Where did you find the brass pulls for the hall dresser? Again awesome job!
So lovely! The console just fits perfectly and adds interest in an otherwise boring corner. And painting out the wood makes such a difference.
So lovely and creatively put together! And I think I’m going to borrow your vase in a lantern idea!
Layla, this looks GREAT! Well done! *pat y’allselves on the back*
Looking good. You could always paint (or stain) the floor to look like a rug. I think you need more projects 😉
Love it!!
I love the transformation! We have exactly the same railing in exactly the same color. We’ve got yards and yards of the stuff and I am dying to paint it all white but am daunted by the sheer enormity of the task! I’m going to search your site for a possible post on what you did and how… Maybe it will calm my nerves and give me courage!
What is the color on your walls?
Wow – looks great! I love the console and that lamp is amazing! Love how the whole thing looks together – the door, the lantern etc. Great fresh space – well done!
Noticed the lamp was from the land of nod. Did you know that there is an actual hamlet in yorkshire. England called land of nod? We pass it on the way to the Coast ANC it always makes us smile.
