Hi!
The Design Network is launching part 2 of our “Cottage Style Kids Room” webisode this morning (Monday), and they’re hosting a really fun giveaway to go along with it.
One lucky watcher/commenter is going to win $1000!
All you have to do to enter for a chance to win is leave a comment underneath the “Cottage Style Kids Room- Part 2” webisode (over on their website). In your comment, tell the folks at TDN about your favorite kids room-related decorating idea. It could be something you’ve incorporated into your own home, or that you’ve seen online, or in a magazine or at someone else’s home. They’ll select the winner on Monday, October 13th and I’ll announce their name in my blog post on Wednesday, October 15th.
I’ve had so much fun creating this special space for our sonny boy.
I published my first blog post about it on December 30th last year, and it has been such a sweet part of my past 9 months.
The bins and baskets are empty right now, but we’re looking forward to filling them up together when he gets home. 🙂
(The rope table lamp we started with ended up moving into the hallway a few months ago, and the wood block one lives on his nightstand now.)
And speaking of my Sweet P, we’re hoping and praying for a very exciting adoption update this week. I can’t share any details, but it sure feels like we are getting soooo close to meeting our boy!
I’ve had “It Is Well” on repeat all afternoon today…
Grander earth has quaked before
Moved by the sound of His voice
Seas that are shaken and stirred
Can be calmed and broken for my regard
Through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
Through it all, through it all
It is well
Through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
It is well with me
Far be it from me to not believe
Even when my eyes can’t see
And this mountain that’s in front of me
Will be thrown into the midst of the sea
So let go my soul and trust in Him
The waves and wind still know His name
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
We’re coming for you, baby boy…the Waves and Wind still know your name, too.

This room is perfect for a little boy. He will make wonderful memories here with his mom and dad. And he will be blessed to have parents who already love him so much. Our church choir just sang this song yesterday…beautiful!

I came to your page through a Facebook link and I want to say that I love your room transformation so much. But I was blown away by the music that you posted. Thank you so much for introducing it to me, I have never heard it before and it moved me so much.

I LOVE what you did with Sweet P’s room, so cool, love it!! I too love LOVE to decorate, and one of the very most favorite things I did in my kids room, was…….. I had a really cute snapshot that I toook when she was a little girl with our beagle. AND one each of my boys riding there dirtbikes on our poperty before we built.
My very VERY talented friend painted a portrait on our wall of both boys, had the same tree’s you see when you look out back, was just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And she painted a taller than life size tree in one corner, with little lady bugs, flowers, ants everything in the tree, AND even painted what looked like a carving in the tree with our daughter’s name on it! I will forever cherish those paintings!!!
I t so SO cuted

Your decorating style is great!!!
This little boy’s room is just right!
It will never be as clean, and as neat as it is now, but it will be full of love, laughter, and memories. I have one daughter who is tidy, but three boys who are not so much. 🙂
Can’t wait to hear your good news as we continue to pray and believe with your family.

Layla,
I loved your webisode. It was great! My favorite was the very last out take with Max and Kit Kat! Hysterical! Your boy is gonna have so much fun in his sweet room and with the funny pets.

Layla,
My favorite is the cleverly built in bookcase, and the shelves, which housed all the titles and sweet memorabilia, such as the word “Son”. I felt like I was looking through your Sweet P’s eyes and the wonder at discovering these various hidden treasures..
Never did I think God has something else for me there, the song you included as your mama heart lies waiting for him. It was what I also needed to hear..May the season of waiting come to a wonderful finish..He is faithful and He will do it.
Joan
Your posts are always so inspirational. And the song is one of my favorites, especially when going through some challenging times.
One of the lovely things I have noticed about the rooms you do is how fresh and airy they are. So full of light which is really energizing. One thing I really like for children’s rooms, especially boys, is covering one wall with weathered rough cut wood (on the headboard wall) because it makes a good backdrop for pictures of airplanes, boats, cars, things that boys like. On another wall using floor to ceiling shelving with baskets or boxes that are labeled helps give a specific home to various types of toys. Both of these things sort of grow with the child. By using a different color of paint as they begin to develop their own preferences the shelves remain useful throughout the years.
By the way, Layla, I tried to enter the contest on the website you suggested, but could not find where to leave a comment.
Thanks for all your great ideas.
Remember, it truly is well with your soul. 🙂

Layla: I just had to write and tell you about a conversation that I was a part of Sunday in church. A gentleman and his family were back visiting from their mission field. They had been members many years ago and are now working as missionaries in another country. They have been in the process of adopting a girl that they met in their work. The process has been going on for a long time – many, many years. One of the ladies that was visiting with him told him that they needed to get their daughter out of there and bring her home. His response was so heart-warming, He said that GOD will get her out of there when He is ready and He WILL be able to get her out of there at that time. In the meantime, God must have a reason He wants them there because He knows they will not leave without her. I was so moved by this man’s unmovable faith in God’s plan. I believe in God’s plan for you and Kevin and that very lucky little boy as well. Someone told me recently, you can only connect the dots looking back, but God knows the plan.

Layla,
Your son’s room is adorable! I have a general question about paint. If I want to go more neutral/white in my house (do away with colored walls) but I have off white trim….do I do an off white wall as well? Slightly varied from the trim? All my wood work including cupboards are a light cream. Just wondering what you thought!

Layla — Your boy’s room looks terrific. I especially like the new built-in shelves and the new “clothes cupboard” with the recycled doors! This little guy looks like he really likes the sandbox! Palmer is my maiden name. I come from the Palmers who came over in 1629, maybe Kevin is too? You can check it out at this site:
http://www.walterpalmer.com/. It is fun to look at. I will be praying for your family and am hoping that very, very soon your beloved little boy will be arriving home. Marilyn

Wow! What a great room!

This room looks amazing! Nice work! I love the Jenny Lind-style beds. Where did you get this one? I looked around on other posts to see if you mentioned, but I can seem to find it. I’ve seen cute ones on Crate & Barrel’s Land of Nod, but the reviews are mixed.

Layla, I am sooooo excited for you, Kevin and your little boy!!! Can’t wait to hear the good news that he is HOME!!!

Sweet, parents,
I have stood where you stand and I am praying with you, and you will need it. He is a wonderful child and he will love you, but you will need to stand firm and strong in your convictions. Parent him with love, of course, but with discipline. Be strong in teaching him gratitude, humility and courage — as both of you have shown. I already know that God has blessed you with kindness. Now demand no less of this beloved child. How fortunate all of you are to have found one another.

Too much on my brain to go to sleep tonight and thought I would check in and see what’s going on on the adoption front for you all. I totally needed to be reminded of the fact that “It is Well,” it is ALL well. Thank you for posting that. Praying your son is in your arms for good, very soon.

I LOVE this room. I have three boys so I am always looking for new ideas. Where did you buy the dog print? It would be perfect for my nursery

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that it’s taken 9 months to finish his room… Sort of a coincidence, don’t you think?!
Beautiful room, and I can’t wait to “meet” your boy!
Kora
Is there any way to get a sources list for your boys room!? Especially that rug!! I have been eyeing your room since I was pregnant with my son who is now two and ready for a big boy room <3
