Moving

Oct 2, 2012 By Layla

Kev’s friend, Jason, helped us move the big stuff…

…and Kev’s mom, Katie, helped us move the rest…

We truly could not have done it without them. (Thanks again, you two. We’re still trying to figure out how we can ever re-pay you!)

I forgot how completely physically and mentally strenuous moving is! I had some serious “I just want to get rid of everything” moments during those five, fast-paced days. And by “get rid of everything”, I meant- leave everything right where it was so I didn’t have to lift anything else– ha!

Half of our belongings are currently in a storage unit, and the other half are sitting in Kev’s parents garage…

We’re staying with them until we close on our new place, and we can’t thank them enough for their generosity and hospitality. Max and Kit-Cat are all out of sorts, and I have a full-blown respiratory infection, but man it’s been nice to spend time with them and take notes in Katie’s kitchen…

We were originally shooting for a September 28th closing date, but that got pushed back to October 5th at some point along the way due to a burst pipe underground, out in front of the house. (The water company found it when they went out to turn the water on.) Now, thanks to a water leak inside the ceiling above the kitchen (below the bathroom sink upstairs), our closing date has been pushed back, yet again, to October 12th. #ThankGoodnessForInfaredTechnology!

We’re anxious to get into the house, but we’re so thankful that our inspector (Dwight Leary) found that second leak yesterday. We’re going to ask the bank who owns the house to fix it when we get our inspection report back tomorrow. #FingersCrossedTheySayYes

In the meantime, we’ll just keep prowling around the new neighborhood…

We were smitten with it from the get-go, and we look forward to blogging all about it once the i’s are officially dotted and the t’s are officially crossed on the 12th!

Yeah!! I hope all goes well and can NOT wait to “join” you in this journey…which for me includes not helping you unpack! Lucky me!

Congrats on the sale of your home! We’re also selling, and our original closing date was 9/28. Well, seems we have some foundation problems, so that’s currently getting fixed (there are massive holes outside my doors) and our closing was pushed to the 12th too! Fingers crossed both go smoothly. Good luck!

Moving is SO HARD! We ran into a similar situation when we bought our house. Our house was owned by the Salvation Army, and they kept pushing it back because they couldn’t get the whole SA Board to sign the docs. But we didn’t have anywhere to stay in the mean time. We were staying at a local hotel. It was an atrocious situation. I’m glad you guys have a place to stay! Sending positive thoughts your way!

Layla! We went through the same thing this summer! The previous owners were supposed to move out by July 9 and we finally kicked him out August 30th! We gave him a little time because there were issues with our house closing….then, I was ready to throw him a tent! We are finally moved in and slowly but surely making it ours. It’s a very rustic cottage and very Southern Accents! Good luck with it all….it will work out!!

We moved halfway across the county in July, downsizing on purpose into a house half the size of the one before. We’d lived in our previous house for 13 years. It took months of sorting to prepare for a mammoth blow-out yard sale. We still moved with more than we should have because I just plain ran out of time. Now preparing for ANOTHER yard sale (a moving-in sale) at the new house. Still surrounded by boxes two months after moving. UGH.

Oh man, house buying and selling is stressful. We had water problems when we came to the house after closing – big mess but good sellers who took care of the problem, And the crown molding looks fancy. Can’t wait to see the awesomeness that the house is and will become.

Does Kevin’s mom happen to live in the neighborhood off of Burbank for 55+? If so, my grandma lives there too. 🙂 Are y’all headed out to The Waters? We are in Pike Road and love it out this way! Best of luck to you!

Oh man…I got a lump in my throat just looking at the empty rooms in your house. I feel like we have all been there and are leaving that little cottage too, but I know there will be good times for you two as you start another adventure. Good luck with moving it all in and unpacking. I like the trim I see around the doors!

I’m actually quite sad to see you leave your old house behind. I’ve loved watching you both bring your unique taste into each corner of your home and amazing vision and talent to see each project through. I wish I could have bought it myself! I am really looking forward to seeing you start all over again in your new house too though. Good luck with your move x

Layla, you make me laugh. I know the feeling of just wanting to either walk away from all the stuff, or turn the house sideways into a big ol’ dumpster. Once the exhaustion subsides happiness takes over we so excited when we unpack it all and think it is all new cause we forgot about it. hehe
I am beyond excited for you. I do LOVE moving and dreaming about where I will move everything. Wish I was closer cause would be thrilled to help. Can’t wait for this new road and adventure of yours to unfold. Love, Geri.
P.S. I LOVE..LOVE..the photo class with Kevin and Josh.

How exciting to have the closing date! We moved to NC 6 months ago for my husband to be an associate pastor at our church. We have been looking for a house since then. We made offers on 3 houses, and they all fell through for various reasons. The 4th was the charm, and after waiting since July 20th when we made our offer, we TOO have a closing date for the 16th! It’s been a long haul, and we’ll be so excited to move in at the end of the month, after some much needed flooring replacement. I can’t wait to get in and putter around fixing it up, little by little, making it our own.

Looking forward to pictures of your new place. ps; did a chalkboard wall in my kitchen because of you 🙂

I know the month of trying to wade through the paperwork for my auction-bought farmhouse was the most intense (and intensely frustrating) month I’ve ever experienceed, but what got me through it was how grateful I was to have found my place. Congrats on being so close to the finish line to your new place, and good luck to crossing it sooner rather than later so the new adventure can begin!

Layla & Kevin – How about sixteen moves in 26 years and that’s not counting the drug house that as the moving trucks pulled away having dropped off our 18,000 pounds of household goods the neighbors told us that not one but THREE swat teams had been in it recently and found it to be a drug house. Yep, that one shall forever more be affectionately know as the five week move to the drug house. Since the government had already moved us Brian and I found another home and had to pack and move ourselves all 18,000 pounds of it five weeks later. I handed the keys to that house over to an IRS agent packing a BIG side arm. Feel better yet?

OH very excited for you two:) AND that bank BETTER fix any leaks or any other issues for that matter!!! Where is your new house…the pic of keving by the water look awesome!!! I’m not gonna lie. I’m jealous. We were supposed to be closing on our house in Sept. after having been on the market for way too long. Found out on Friday both the buyer and her attorney were not too honest and she is now in breach of contract. Sooooo, instead of moving on toward a much deserved retirement, we have a law suit pending.

Now that I got that out of my system, I AM truly happy for you and wish you and Kevin many, many years of happiness in your new home! Looking forward to seeing all the really cool things you’re gonna do to it!

I hope you are all settled soon and feeling better. Moving is such an upset to life on EVERY level. I look forward to seeing your new house and what you do to it. I got a little twang of sadness seeing your empty house after all the hard work. I can imagine you are both feeling sad as well as excited. I know the new owners will enjoy it. The first night in a new house is very special. Kind of like camping out and kind of like starting on a whole new adventure. I hope to never move again, but I fondly remember my first night in my house. Enjoy!

Okay, this has nothing to do with your moving (congratulations!), delay (good that the water issues were caught before closing!) or your infection (bummer!) This is an off-beat personal question to Kevin and his buddy, Jason…. I noticed that you, Kevin have a half-sleeve and Jason a pretty-much full sleeve. Both are on your left arms. Any significance? My son has both half sleeves, but now I am trying to remember which came first, left or right…. (Sorry, my mind works in mysterious ways, and I tend to notice strange things.) 😉
