Y’all. This could *literally* be the week that we get the email that says our I-600 is approved and that Three Angels can schedule Sonny’s final appointments so that we can book our plane tickets!! AAAHHH! Needless to say, I’ll probably be hitting the “refresh” button on my inbox quite a bit this week. 😉
A lot is going on with the Bungalow Barn this week, too- so that’ll be a good distraction. Plumbing and electricity are going in, and I’m soooo excited to take you on another tour this Friday when a few more projects are finished up!
We’re still working on finishing up some projects in our master bedroom before Sonny gets home too. This past week, we made a change to our bed, and man has it been a reeeeally sweet switch. We got our first-ever, brand new mattress!
Yes. You read that right. We’ve never purchased a new mattress. Shortly after Kevin and I got married, a friend of Kevin’s gave us his (already several years old) king-sized mattress because he and his wife were upgrading to a new one. Well, Max was a puppy back then, and promptly proceeded to dig a large hole in it.
“No biggie“, we thought, “we’ll just get a new mattress when he’s a little older, and I’ll just stick my heel in it for fun until then“.
That was 11 years ago, and we’ve been sleeping on this lumpy fella ever since:
But enough about the old mattress…here’s a photo of the new one, straight out of the box it was delivered in:
It was made by the folks at GelFoamBed.com and we. are. LOVING it!
They have three different styles too choose from. The 10″ Triton (firm)…
…the 12″ Miranda (plush firm)…
…and the “14 Venus (plush):
We chose the 12″ Miranda- mainly just because we knew we didn’t want firm, and we weren’t sure if we’d get enough support with the plush one. And for those who might be curious about these kinds of things, their mattresses are all made to order out of materials from the US that meet the Certi-pur US guidelines to be safe, non-toxic and durable. As for price, they range from $349-$849 depending on what size and thickness you get. (And now that I’ve connected with the company, there’s a $50 “theletteredcottage” discount code folks can enter at checkout!) My favorite thing about the new mattress is that it doesn’t move or make noise when Kevin rolls over anymore. He can flop right over and my side stays completely still- hallelujah! 😀 I think we’ll really appreciate that feature when Sonny is home and we’re all sleeping or napping on it, too.
I’ll have to write another post about it next year, and let you know how it’s holding up. It’s nice to know we’ve got 100 days to try it out, and that the GelFoamBed peeps will come pick it up (for free) if we decide we don’t like it at that point.
As for Max, he doesn’t destroy anything these days. He’s 11 now, and seems to prefer napping over…well….almost everything. 🙂
I think he loves our new mattress as much as I do too. 😉
Tami
Awww, pup-pup! Our Bear is 10 y/o and he sleeps a lot more, too. Thanks for posting about the mattress. My husband and I have been considering getting a new one. Like you we have never purchased a brand new mattress and our current one is also a hand-me-down. We are a little gun shy though. ‘What if the mattress starts to get lumpy and uncomfortable not long after we purchase it?’, is a huge question in our minds. We’d hate to spend that much money only to be disappointed a few months later.

Hi Tami!
I just edited my post to include the part about GelFoamBed’s money back guarantee/free trial period. They’ll come and get it if you decide you don’t like it in the first 100 days. I don’t know if other mattress companies offer that (?) but it made me feel a little more confident about giving this one a whirl! 🙂
Tami
Nice! Thanks for the update!?????

I’ve been hemming and hawing over buying a new mattress for ages. My old one was expensive (thus guilt + dragging feet over buying a new one) and WAY too firm. So, I’ve been sleeping on my daughter’s former twin bed and getting much better rest than I have in years. I put out on Facebook I was searching for an Eco-Friendly one and only a couple of people here in ATL responded. Loom and Leaf was their recommendation.
I’m just curious how long you’ve been sleeping on this one as I know we can have a honeymoon with such things sometimes!

Hi Amanda!
We’ve had ours for about a month, but what’s really neat about this particular company is there’s a 100-day money back guarantee so you can try it out for free and they’ll come and get it if you don’t like it. Pretty cool! 🙂

Layla, the mattress looks a-maz-ing! 🙂 Max sure looks comfy. I hope you are getting a great night’s rest/sleep on this new beauty.
Unrelated but I thought of you when another blog I follow sent out a list of adoption sayings. Here’s the link and you’ll see why I thought of your family! 🙂

I’m in the market for a new mattress too! I didn’t think I would like a gel mattress but now I’m thinking I should re-think that decision . . . Thoughts?
So excited for you guys this week! Fingers crossed ( and toes too!)
Amber
How long will the $50 discount work?

Hi Layla–my beloved dog Johnny looked SO much like Max. I adored that pup. Is Max a chihuahua? Johnny was a rescue and I never knew exactly what breed he was. Thanks, Susan

what is the special code?

Max looks pretty content : ) Mattress shopping can be a challenge so anxious to see how this works out. Love that it is non-toxic. Continued prayers as the day is ever so much closer!!

My hubby and I live in North Georgia. 18 years ago we purchased a firm queen size mattress from “The Original Mattress Firm”. After 6 years we had a small problem with our mattress. OMF, company came to our house pick- up the mattress @ no charge repaired our mattress and returned it to our home. We have had our mattress 18 years and still sleeping on it nightly. The OMF company makes their own mattresses. A U.S.Company. These are not foam mattresses.
Layla
Ooh- but the foam is so dreamy! 😀
Gloria
Wow, Linda, I will have to check out “The Original Mattress Firm” — for you to have it for 18 years, and still using it? That is one great recommendation. Thanks! –gv

Oh my goodness, Max is 11 now?? I remember your first post about him! I knew I’d been following you for a long time, but those years went by fast! You’ve been a very helpful and positive influence on our DIY home remodeling efforts. 🙂 And thanks for the info about the bed! My son is in the market for a new bed, so I’m telling him about this asap. Also, I have butterflies in my stomach thinking you could get the email about Sonny any day now! I’ve shed some tears and prayers for you, along with many of your readers. 🙂

Never ceases to amaze the things you can purchase on line, we bought our last large screen online and was delivered with no issues! And now mattresses! And the price seems very reasonable, might be prefect for our guest room, please keep us posted with your thoughts for the 100 day trial period!
Hope this mattress helps you rest better with all the sweet dreams you must be having waiting for final stages to bring Sonny home!
Ps Max looks like a perfect model to show just how comfy that mattress is!

Hi Layla:
While I’m excited that you’re experiencing great sleep with your new mattress, please search the internet for memory foam ingredients. Many of the mattress foam and gel ingredients are said to be non-toxic, yet they have polyurethane and other chemicals that cause respiratory, reproductive problems, and cancers. Hopefully any questions or concerns you develop after your research can be answered by your mattress company, and you can continue enjoying your new set.
I’m praying that you get the “Come get Sonny” go-ahead very soon!
Jennifer W
Does the mattress make for a warm night’s sleep? I’ve often read that foam and gel mattresses are warm.
Peggy Lynn
I’m curious if this is a reversible mattress, as in you can flip it and use the underside?
Layla
No, it’s not reversible, Peggy Lynn.

This post is great timing! We are in the market for a king mattress!
Also looking for a headboard and love yours …. where is it from? I’ve found one on Wayfair and Joss & Main that I like but the reviews say the quality isn’t there.
Love your cottage style — and how you continue inspiring me in my cottage decor year after year!

You’re dog Max looks identical to my dog Lucy. Lucy passed away 2 years ago, when she was 18. I loved her to death. She was my first dog (of 7 chihuahuas) and secretly she was my favorite (she knew it). What I wouldn’t do to have my baby back?.
Thank you for posting his pictures.

Sorry Lisa for you losing your “Lucy” we have two brother Chihuahua’s. They will soon be 7 years. We spoil them to death! We have had many dogs over a 45 year marriage. Some dogs are more special because of their personality. Some are close to you and then you become close to them. Some need their owners, more. We just never want to give up our sweet pets!
