Remember that “Lunch Now Being Served” sign I blogged about last year?
Well, it’s hanging in a new spot in the kitchen as of today:
After I got done decking out the countertops the other day, I felt like I wanted to add something above the stove. I stood there and stared at it for a while, and finally decided that it:
– had to be something see-thru (didn’t want to cover up our backsplash)
– should be something lettered (just felt right)
–would ROCK if it was something I didn’t have to leave the house to find!
Boom: The Lunch sign hanging right around the corner! 😀 #LoveItWhenThatHappens
I tried it out with it’s original wire hanger, but I wasn’t loving the way that part of it looked:
The (super-hard-to-straighten) wire had a mind of it’s own, and the dark color of it really stood out against the backsplash, which made it’s wonkiness even more noticeable.
Tone-wise, I wanted it to look more like the rope our pendant lights hang from, and the corbels our bar top sits on…
…so I snipped that wire off, and hung it up with a piece of twine!
It’s a small change, but see how the sign gets to shine now that the wobbly wire is gone?
I just love it! 🙂

In flea market news, I wanted to share a few photos from one that opened here in Pike Road not long ago. It’s called Red Top Market, and it’s owned and operated by a sweet gal named Lois:
It’s right off Exit 16 if you’re traveling to or from Montgomery, Alabama on I-85 (North or South).
The street address is 14 Marler Road, Pike Road, Alabama.
Lois and her family had been fixing up the place for a while before they moved everything in, and boy did my heart a skip a beat (or three!) the day they stuck their “Antiques” sign up in front of the building! 😀
Just wanted to invite you locals to swing by and check it out if you’re in the neighborhood…and those of you coming to The Chapel Market on October 25th should definitely make a visit there, too! 🙂

The lunch sign is perfect hanging on that stunning backsplash!!

It looks fabulous. I often use cooking twine to hang things around the house. I like how it looks and I think if it can stand up to over 200C in the oven it has to be pretty strong.

How did I miss this sign from last year??? I love it!! So perfect for that spot (and it is still available at World Market – woo hoo!).
Dee
Your ideas are great. You remind that subtle changes make a big difference & go a long way! And… where did you get that incredible backsplash for your kitchen. It’s dynamite!
P.S. I also LOVED your cat door solution!!
Angela
I love the sign! I missed it before too. Amazing how a small detail as switching the wire makes such a difference.

I am not sure how the pop up ads benefit you on your blog. I thought you would like to know though that a current one from Walgreens advertising Poise Impressa goes clear across the screen and when you try to scroll and read your blog the ad follows you making that impossible. I finally gsve up. I tried changing the screen to find a close or opt out for the ad but couldn’t find one.
Layla
Hi Maureen!
We’re having a heck of a time figuring out who is responsible for those pop-up ads, but I will be forwarding your message to my web tech today to see if there is anything else we can do to prevent them from popping up on people’s mobile devices. (I am assuming you’re on a mobile device, because I’ve never seen them on my desktop or laptop computers, but I have seen them on my iPhone.) Thanks for the heads up! 🙂

Hi Layla & Maureen,
To help out the web techs…
1. I am not getting any pop up ads when I view the site on my laptop using Internet Explorer 8.
2. No pop up ads using Mozilla Firefox, current version (sorry, can’t find the version number).
3. No pop up ads when viewing the site on my IPad using Safari.

Hi Layla, your kitchen is looking great! Love your “new” sign… nothing better than shopping our own homes. I’m always looking for ways to use what I have. I too have problems opening your blog fully. Glad it worked today! Cheryl Ann

Love that little sign Layla and your kitchen is coming along wonderfully! I love the colors you have chosen.

Love the sign there–perfect! And I was noticing I love the trim on your windows. Different from the standard window trim–such a nice detail. Love that table with the drawers! I immediately pictured MMSMP and different knobs and knew that would be a dream piece to own. It is about perfect just as is with those drawers. Good thing I am not close. I would have high tailed it over there and made it mine at any cost I am afraid!

I never would have thought changing the wire out for the twine would make such a difference in how the sign looks.
Every time I spy your kitty in one of the photos I am reminded of the story of how he came to live with you and am happy all over again for him and for you.
Amber
I ADORE all of your little details! I can’t believe what a difference the twine made! Love that little sign…and the corbels…and the tile…and…ALL of it!
Carol
Love your little sign but, most of all, I love your kitty. My tuxedo cat has now been gone for 15 yrs. but I still miss her. She lived to the ripe old age of 19.
Mindy
Amazing how something as small as changing a wire to twine can make such a difference. It really is all in the details and you do them like no other. Everything looks so cute : )

Be still my heart…those wire baskets in Lois’ shop!! Why oh why do I not live in AL?!?!
Julia
agreed — they look like the swim baskets we used at our city pool as kids.
Lois Finlay
These are those same baskets that were used as lockers. If you can’t make it to the Chapel Market, maybe we could work out mailing them to you!

Hi Layla, your kitchen is beautiful. Would you mind telling me where you got the bamboo blinds in the window? I love the light color of them. Thank you!!
kerry
I Love your home. Can you tell me what height your baseboard trim is as well as the trim around the windows? Also, is that gray owl paint at 100% in the photo with kit kat?
