How To Shoot Photography – ShootFlyShoot.com

Mar 2, 2012 By Layla

Exciting e-news!

Me and the guys are putting the finishing touches on ShootFlyShoot.com this weekend, and it’ll be up and running this coming Monday morning!

It’s been a looooong process, and I’m so excited it’s almost ready to rumble! What started out as a text message between friends last year, is now a fully-functional website- woo hoo! Here’s a video about ShootFlyShoot in case you missed it the first time around…

Eventually, the guys plan to offer several different types of classes (everything from how to make a blog button, to how to shoot film, to how to edit videos), but they’re launching on Monday with their first class: Photography 101. The next couple of classes they plan to add will be Photoshop Elements and Photoshop 101, and they look forward to making those available within the next month or two.

Here’s the low-down on Photography 101. In a nutshell, it’s a class for DSLR beginners, who are interested in learning how to shoot in manual (M) mode, to capture beautiful portraits and interior photographs.

Photography 101 is a series of 12 separate online videos, in which Kevin and Josh break down each of their photography tips and techniques, in a simple, laid-back way, so viewers can actually see how they do things. They explain everything (multiple times) in a very down-to-earth, easy-to-understand manner, and they show you which camera settings you actually need to use to get the kinds of results they do. Some parts of the class are taught in-studio, and some things are taught in-the-field. It’s really fun! (Just like the two of them!)

Throughtout the entire ($69) 2 hour and 40 minute class, they show you exactly how they’re moving the buttons and dials on their cameras, and because the class is taught through online videos, you can learn at your own pace. You can hit pause, rewind, or go back and watch any one of them anytime you’d like. Once you pay for a class, you’ll be able to access it forever!

I took the class (twice!) and Kev thought it would be a good idea to put my newly-learned knowledge to the test before the site launched, so we went downtown and I shot these photos of him using the methods they taught me…

(I call this particular layout, “Hubba Hubba”)

I was pretty ecstatic to make it through the whole shoot without having to ask him how to manipulate my settings for the first time ever!

So, if you’re interested in learning more about your camera, or how to shoot photography, swing on over to ShootFlyShoot.com on Monday, March 5th. The site will be alive and kickin’, and to celebrate their ‘grand opening’, the guys are going to be giving away the same kind of lens I used to shoot those photos of Kevin. (If you own Nikon it’ll be a Nikon lens, if you own a Canon, it’ll be a Canon lens.)

Happy snappin’, and thanks in advance to anyone who decides to give Josh and Kev’s first class a shot!

I’m buying my camera this weekend and I’ll definitely need a lot of hand-holding learning to use it. These courses couldn’t have come at a better time!

      Mar 2, 2012 at 8:54 am

Yay! Forgot to mention, the guys will be posting links to their favorite camera equipment and editing software on Monday, too! What are thinking about buying?

        Mar 2, 2012 at 9:05 am

I’m thinking the Canon Rebel T3i or Nikon D5100. Thoughts? I need a honest opinion. It’s to shoot photos for my blog.

        • Kevin

          Mar 2, 2012 at 9:40 am

          Hi Shauna!

To be honest they are both great cameras. Nikon and Canon make wonderful products and you can’t go wrong either way.

We teach on a Canon Rebel, but the concepts are the same for any DSLR camera. The main difference between the two is just that the buttons are in different places, so Canon users are used to one feel and Nikon users are used to a different feel. But as for the product, both are great!

          Mar 2, 2012 at 9:46 am

I just bought the D5100 and I love it, very user friendly! Takes wonderful auto mode photos. I can’t say much on the subject though since it’s my first dslr…which is why I’m so excited the guys are putting these classes together! I’m a busy mom of 2 with a hubby in the military (insert crazy schedule) and I don’t have time to drive to the local community college 2 evenings a week for their intro class on photography. This is so perfect!

    I can hardly wait!
Question…. will we be able to download the instructional videos and classes for later refreshers? Or is this a one time thing?

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 9:21 am

      Hi Cheri!

Once you sign up for Photography 101, you will have access to the videos (and any updates we make) forever! 🙂

I am so excited about these workshops! To be honest with you, I love photography and blogging, but my photography skills are just so so. I am super excited to learn from Kevin! You two make quite a power team with all your mad skillz. 🙂

    Mar 2, 2012 at 9:10 am

This is so exciting. I’ve been searching in my area for a class but haven’t found one. I’m pumped to give it a whirl and that it is so affordable is a plus! If you purchase the Photography 101 will you have access to those videos indefinitely so you can “brush up”?

Also, Layla you photos look beautiful above!

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 9:24 am

      Hi Amy!

Yes, you will have access to the videos forever! So you can learn at your own pace and go back and watch as many times as you like! Thanks for comment! 🙂

Ahh!!! I’m freakin’ excited about Monday!.. Got the reminder set on the calendar to stop by ShootFlyShoot.com! Such a reasonable price! (Any ideas if they will be doing a ‘Adobe Lightroom’ session in the future?

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 9:55 am

Hi Ashley! Thanks for the comment!

We plan on doing ‘Adobe Camera RAW’ and ‘Adobe Lightroom’ in the future! 🙂

    Hi guys,
I bought an Olympus Pen camera a few months ago and was actually thinking about taking a class at our local shop, but I love the idea of on-line teaching with my busy schedule.
Will the tips and techniques translate to my type of camera? I know most cameras you discuss are the Nikon or Canon, so I wanted to make sure it would work for me.
Good luck with the new site!
    Karen

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 9:31 am

      Hi Karen!
We use a Canon Rebel for most of the hands on instruction, but it works the same for any camera that you can manually change the ISO, aperture and shutter speed. Hope that helps! 🙂

      • Karen @ The Quaint Cottage

        Mar 2, 2012 at 9:52 am

Thanks for responding. I figured it would work, but the classes here were all broken into the specific camera brands, so I just wanted to make sure.

Heading over to sign up. 🙂

    Mar 2, 2012 at 9:28 am

oooh, i’m so excited!! i am also going to buy a new camera (thinking of the canon rebel t31 as well) but will wait until monday to see what the guys recommend! 🙂

I am very interested in taking a photography class from you guys but my Macbook says that I am missing a plug in? It doesn’t give me any more info. Could you tell me what plug in you are using so I can download it. Thanks!

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 10:41 am

      Hi Wendy!

The video was uploaded on Vimeo and it should work with any computer. You may have to update your browser (Safari, Firefox etc.), but Vimeo is usually compatible with most everything.

If you click on the Apple icon at the top left corner of your computer screen, there should be an option to update your software. Hopefully that will do the trick! Hope that helps! 🙂

  15. Colleen

    Mar 2, 2012 at 9:58 am

Hi – will these classes be available at anytime? After I pay, can I then take my time watching the videos or will they only be available at certain times? Also, I have a Mac. Will your videos be compatible? Thanks. This is a super great idea!

    • Layla

      Mar 2, 2012 at 10:11 am

Yep! I mentioned a little bit about that in my post, but I should’ve been more clear because it looks like lots of other folks had the same question! 😀 And, yes, definitely Mac compatible. The whole site was created on Macs! 😀

I am really looking forward to this class!! I took a photography 101 course last winter and love, loved it! However, I haven’t been diligent in keeping up with the learnings, so am excited that this will hopefully be a refresher course for me – right in time for spring!! Yay!

  17. jessica@fourgenerationsoneroof

Looking forward to it and very excited about the reasonable price! 🙂

    Mar 2, 2012 at 10:58 am

Whoo hooo!! Pretty excited and cannot wait to take the guy’s class.
May I also just say this – the price is amazing.
I recently paid $70 for just a one hour class at our local camera shop. It was also DSLR 101 – just the basics – but 60 minutes was all you got – you had to spend it furiously scribbling notes so you wouldn’t forget anything (no time to try out any of the tips, etc you were hearing). This online class sounds SO MUCH better. It really is a deal, too. You guys are so awesome to offer this to us. I am so looking forward to it.

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 2:00 pm

Thanks Teri! We’re excited to get started!

    Mar 2, 2012 at 11:00 am

Hi there! Soo excited to see these as an option…I am a very visual learner, so this is the way to go for me! 🙂 I am wondering {maybe dumb question} if I can sign up at any time for the class? I would love to do it right away, but we are going to be busy the next couple of weeks. I’m assuming so if it is an online thing that you can access at any point. Just thought I’d double-check. Thanks and good luck!!!

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 2:04 pm

      Ho JoLynn!
Yes you can sign up at anytime! The classes will always be available and once you purchase a class, you will have access to it forever! Thanks!

This is such exciting news! I’ve followed Lettered Cottage for a couple of years now and in the process gained such an appreciation of and interest in photography. I’ve tried a couple of local classes and came away so disappointed both times. My husband gave me a Cannon Rebel T3i for Christmas and money for an additional lens for Valentine’s Day. This is exactly what I need and I look forward to getting advice from “the guys” on a lens choice.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for everything you so graciously share through The Lettered Cottage. You’re amazing!

Yay! So happy that Monday is coming with this. I have been looking forward to it for quite awhile. There are so many of us wanting to sign on Monday, I hope we don’t crash the site! Your fee for this made me quite happy…I was so afraid I wasn’t going to be able to fit it in my over-extended budget this month..but this I CAN do! See ya Monday over at Shoot Fly Shoot (love the name by the way…who’s brainchild was that??)

    • Kevin

      Mar 2, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Hi Kelly! Layla came up with the name Shoot Fly Shoot.

We spent days trying to think of a good name and Layla thought of it while I was in the shower. She came running in yelling “I got it, I got it…how about Shoot Fly Shoot!” Scared me half to death, but I love the name! 🙂

Thank you for joining us on Monday!

I’m SUPER excited! Now if I can only figure out how to get my ancient computer to play video without it stopping every two seconds. I may have to buy a new computer just to take the class! I’m also pumped about the Photoshop class, but I have yet to purchase the program. Any recommendations on where I should buy it?

    • Kev

      Mar 3, 2012 at 6:52 pm

      Hi Angie!
You may have to hit the pause button and let the video fully load first. That might help with the problem. We will have Photoshop Elements available from our shop page on Monday! Thanks for stopping by today! 🙂

I love the look of the new site, and this site too! You guys have great graphic design. Side note- I still got this post (and other word press blog posts from today) in my google blog reader, I thought it was supposed to go away as of yesterday?

My husband and I are thrilled for these courses. He’s bringing his fishing pal, I’m bringing my 2 sisters. We’re all bringing our cameras to sit in front of a 30″ apple monitor. My sis and I are setting up a classroom in the library with 5 chairs and plenty of room for practice and discussion.

We’re looking forward to the bright blessing of your humor and goodness and DSLR knowledge. Can’t wait to explore the dials and buttons and menus: An absolute beginner here; one who is ready to venture beyond Auto, into the “Depth of Field.'” (whatever that is.)

“simple, laid-back way” – it is that description that fully has my intention! There is nothing worse than having sonething like be so techy you lose focus (no pun intended) I have had my Canon DSLR for a while now (would love to upgrade but it’s not in the cards right now). Anyway, I want so badly to really know what I can do without it on AUTO. I truly want better photos for my blog……from my art to home interior shots to out and about. Fingers are crossed we can work their classes in to the budget!
This is a fabulous thing you two are offering Kevin!

I’m so stinkin’ excited about this!! You’ve read my mind! I’ve wanted something like this for a long, long time. Thanks and I hope it is very successful for you guys!! Nice name, intro video, graphics, etc. Everything you touch turns out amazing. I love the Palmers!!!!!

    Hey,
I just watched your video on shoot fly shoot website, just to hear about what the program is about and just to see what type of people yall are. You just got me pumped up and am thinking about taking the class! You guys seem really fun and seem like you might be great teachers. I have been looking at taking a photography class for interior design and products and want to learn Photoshop, or want someone to help me how to do those, and I think I may have just found it! I do have one question, what does the $69 class include? Does it just include photoshop 101 or do you have to purchase another course to take the photography 101 class?

    Thanks!

    • Layla

      Mar 3, 2012 at 12:46 pm

      Hey Rizza!

Thanks for swinging by today, and leaving such a nice comment! 😀
The price of Photography 101 (which will launch on Monday) is $69.
Photoshop 101 will be a separate class, with a separate price, and the guys look forward to launching that within the next couple of months.
      Thanks again for visiting us!

    Kevin,

Yeah, uploaded adobe flash and I’m good to go!! So excited about your classes. I have had a Canon Rebel for 6 years now and ALL I shoot in is auto……I am a mom of 3 and would LOVE LOVE LOVE if you guys could do a course on sports photography indoor and out. I am sure quite a few of your followers are parents and shooting sports is super frustrating (shooting through baseball fencing, shooting indoor basketball shoots-too dark, shooting fast soccer or football running shots, etc…) My photos stink and auto is just not doing it for me and I’m sure I’m not the only one?? Please please consider this option. Thanks and looking forward to class!!

    • Wendy

      Mar 3, 2012 at 4:36 pm

Which photo shop for mac do you recommend?? Please tell me not the $600 one?? Is there a more affordable version? Which photoshop will you guys be teaching? I would hate to buy the wrong program. Thanks again.

      • Kev

        Mar 3, 2012 at 6:46 pm

        Hi Wendy!
We will be teaching both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

They will be our next releases after Photography 101 launches on Monday. I don’t blame you for not wanting to spend a lot of money on it, Photoshop Elements is more affordable and it is great! 🙂

You guys must be so excited by all the positive feedback! I hope you get an overwhelming response to the classes.

I have been looking at the site and just the breakdown for lenses for different cameras alone has been helpful! I actually have a journalism degree and took photography in college (a whole 3 years ago), and I can tell by your introductions that this class is going to be more helpful than that was. I’m so excited. This is exactly what I needed. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I took a $400.00 photo class learned a lot but just cannot take pics of people/pets geez. so at some point i will sign up for this prob really soon. great name ha ha layla how funny catchy.

This is how much of a camera newbie I am, I’m not even sure if I have a DSLR camera or not. I think I have a point and shoot (Canon Powershot SX110IS). If that is the case, would this class benefit me or should I wait until I upgrade? I love to take photos but I want to take better ones. Thank you :)!
