How To Decorate Shelves For Fall (Or Anytime, Really)

Oct 23, 2014 By Layla

Whew- what a busy week! Preparing for The Chapel Market has had me on the go-go-go, and I sure can’t wait to sit down in Bethany’s chair at the salon this morning. Yep. I’ve decided it’s time to decorate my hair for Fall. I’m thinking: cinnamon sugar…a.k.a- light auburn with a variety of lighter-colored highlights. We’ll see how that turns out. 😉

And speaking of The Chapel Market, my neighbor/friend Kathy is opening up her home again this year for the Friday vendor/volunteer supper, so we had some fun adding some Fall touches to the shelves in her dining room this week.

We used a couple of those pretty pumpkins I got at the Farmer’s Market on Tuesday, but everything else we added came out of Kathy’s Halloween storage bins and from other places around the house.

I didn’t realize it until I got home later that afternoon and looked at these photos, but I think one of the keys to artfully arranging shelves has to do with how you diagonally stagger things.

For instance, check out how all the wheat-colored items are diagonally staggered from shelf to shelf:

…and the darker brown items:

…and the hydrangeas:

You get the idea. 🙂

This afternoon, we’ll tackle the tabletops. Evan and Laura Jean will be out to help…ornamental cabbage in tow. The pumpkins we picked up at the Farmer’s Market have all been soaked in bleach-water (did you know that will preserve them for months?) and the weather is be-yoo-ti-ful, yahooooo! I’ll be back next week with some pics and a post about how it all came together. The centerpieces and my hair. 😉

Happy weekend!

PS- If you’re in the area, I’d love to meet you at The Chapel Market tomorrow. Here’s a link to my post about it if you’d like to check out any of the info again: The Chapel Market 2014

    Layla,
Where did you get the awesome shelving unit? It looks a lot like the etageres I have in my shop from DB Imports. I would love to have something similar to yours in my kitchen. BTW: I LOVE YOUR STYLE!

This is super helpful! Decorating is hard for me to understand. I know what I like when I see it, but have trouble recreating the look at home. I could have stared at the picture for ages and not clued into the diagonal spacing. I’m so glad you pointed it out–that’s what makes it feel balanced and right. But the texture makes it interesting.

    Hi Layla,
Love getting your emails from the Lettered Cottage! Can you give me the link for the pumpkins and the bleach water? Have a great weekend at Chapel Market. Wish I could be there to see all the treasures!

Really great explanation of how you styled the shelves. Open shelves can be very tricky to get right. Thank you for sharing!

I would love to know where Kathy got that gorgeous light fixture hanging in her dining room! Good luck with Chapel Market this weekend. One of these times I am going to road trip from Missouri to Alabama and enjoy it but for now it’s volleyball and soccer Mom duty on the weekends and I am enjoying them. 🙂

Looks so pretty! I am always amazed at people that are able to keep things minimalistic and beautiful. I don’t have that skill/talent :).
