Half Bath Redo

Feb 11, 2013 By Layla

Now that the sunroom is at a good stopping point (for the time being), we’ve decided to move on to a itty-bitty space that sits right next to it: our half bath.

As you can see in the first floor layout above, it’s the only bathroom on the main floor of our (1728 sq. ft., 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath) house, and since it’s the one that gets “visited” the most, we’d like to make it an extra special little space. #SmallSpacesAreMyFavorite!

Here’s what the room looks like right now…

…and here’s an inspiration board I put together that shows what we’ve got in mind:

(1- Daydream Wallpaper, 2- Sky Chief Barn Light, 3- Dresser (ours), 4- Wainscoting Photo, 5- Hex Tile)

We’re excited to start pulling the whole thing together (on a budget!), and we look forward to sharing each step of our “renoventure” here on our blog!

PS- Speaking of small spaces: the folks at Bedrooms & Baths magazine featured our old reading room in this month’s issue!

I stopped by the old house (to picked up some mail) yesterday and it was so neat to see that the new owner is having just as much fun with the house as we did!

Can’t wait to see what your final product looks like. It’s a cute little bathroom, but I know you can squeeze a lot of character into it!

Yes! Small space character-squeezin’ is so much fun! 😀

LOVE everything you have planned Layla! We are hoping to build our “dream house” within the next year and I just might have to use that wallpaper (although my husband will probably freak because we’ve stripped our fair share of yucky wallpaper in the past – so he has quite the wallpaper aversion!)

where do you plan on putting the dresser? curious!! 🙂

OMG I am so excited to see how you pull this all together! We have a downstairs bath almost identical to yours except our door opens to the other wall, but it has no character. It’s like my very own Pick My Presto!! Yeah!!!

Thanks for this! Who knew Overstock had tile? Not me! We’re closing on a 1951 house next month… and it hasn’t been updated much since 1951. We can. not. wait. to get started! Thanks for posting your sources!

Sadly (for us), your half bath looks the size of our two regular baths. lol We live in a 1970s ranch house, and they skimped when it came to bathrooms in those days. Not like older ranch homes.

I adore that wallpaper! Can’t wait to see how it all comes together for you.

I think that might have something to do with my wide angle lens. 🙂 The longest side of the room measures 4’x 6′ and the shortest measures 4’x 4′-7″!

I love all of your choices! Are you keeping the current sink?

    • Layla

      Feb 11, 2013 at 12:22 pm

Nope. We’re using the antique dresser with a sink in it instead! 🙂

      • Jean

        Feb 11, 2013 at 12:42 pm

I thought maybe that’s what you were doing, but the picture makes the dresser look deceptively tall. 🙂 It’s going to be mavelous, dahling!

It is going to be a beautiful bath when you are done, cant wait to see it. I know your not using the sink but the base painted white and distressed would look like and antique french farmhouse wash stand! HMMM, will that sink be on the curb with a “FREE” sign on it??? LOL.

Awww.. I must get that magazine soon! I think that small room will always hold a huge part in my heart. I’m sure many of us feel that way. It almost feels as though we lived in that space as well even if it was only in our “sweet dreams”. I look forward to watching you create many more wonderful spaces in your new home. Thank you for taking us along with you (hugs)

You should see the latest Country Living magazine cover. The roman shades they made was fabric printed from a postcard, i think. It just reminded me of your sparrows.

At first I thought…How cool is that! They’re featuring your reading room while you’re working on your reading room. And then I looked again and realized that it was your Reading Room. And you’re working on your powder room. 😀 I’m sure you’re not getting it at all. But, when I was a little girl, when someone couldn’t be found, my dad would say, “I think they’re in the reading room.” Or sometimes he’d refer to the powder room as the library. Haha!! Congrats on your feature. That room was quite lovely.

    Feb 11, 2013 at 9:13 pm

We like to “rename” some of the rooms in our house. Instead of calling our the “half-bath” we like to call it the “powder room”. Sounds fancier! 🙂 Also, we switched our living room and dining room. We now call the smaller room that used to be the dining room the “parlor”.
I am looking forward to the transformation! Those builders baths can be awful. I did a lot to ours to make it ours, but we just can’t afford stuff like new flooring and a new sink/vanity. I don’t know how you do it. 🙂

    • Layla

      Feb 11, 2013 at 9:24 pm

Hi Kristi! We tried out “powder room” for a few days, but we just couldn’t get used to saying it- ha! 😀
We’re keeping this re-do low dough as always: inexpensive second hand finds, discount/free building supplies, and *hopefully* working out a trade or two, too! Coming up with the plan was the fun part- pulling it all together will be the tricky part! 😀

Check out Home Depot for the hex tile in white, I used it in a small bathroom. Actually it has a hex and a square by Datile. I used a gray
grout as I had some gray in the small room. I like your ideas, so fun and just your style. I like what you have done with the house so far.

I never comment on blogs, but I had to today because I love your vision for the bathroom. I really love how you pull a room together. It’s funny because my style is so different, but I love how beautifully you and your husband put your style and personal touches into your rooms. When you get your little sweet p, he/she will be one lucky kid. Good luck on everything!

Oh gosh, I cannot wait!! I love everything you do, and always look forward to some fresh surprise when you are working on a new space. When I first saw your inspiration board, of course I loved it, but I thought the hexagonal tile was chicken wire, lol! I was like, “Huh…chicken wire…I wonder where she’s going to use that?” I knew it would be great, whatever you did, lol! 🙂
