“The house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.”
―Gaston Bachelard
Brick it is! One called Spanish Fort to be exact:
It isn’t reclaimed, but I sure do love it! I think I’ll “wash” a little extra grout on top of ours to really give it a relaxed/muted look.
Here’s the photoshop pic I put together the other day that shows how I’d like to line the bricks up:
One vertically-positioned row above and below the firebox, and one horizontally-positioned stack on each side of the firebox. Apparently it’s called “solider course” when they’re arranged in rows like that. I’m thinking we’ll go with a simple slab of limestone on top of the hearth. Something that leans earthy-gray. I’ll keep you posted.
In related news- check out this tile I saw while I was at Acme the other day:
Can you believe that’s tile!? Those are grout lines in between each “plank”. It was SO pretty in person!
I searched for more info about it, and discovered it’s called Charleston.
They only show it on walls in their online brochure. I wonder if that means you can’t use it on the floor? Sure would make a good looking flooring too, don’t you think?
Happy weekend, fellow dreamer!

I had the same question about using it as flooring. Did a little digging and found this on the website by clicking “Downloads” and then “Sample Boards Charleston” (http://www.florimusa.com/charleston/#downloadsTab):
WHY PORCELAIN?
There are many reasons to choose impervious porcelain
tile over other floor coverings. It offers the largest array of
design options and holds its value the longest.
In a comparison between the many different flooring
options, porcelain tile offers one of the most durable and
least expensive options over the lifespan of the building.
Benefits of Porcelain Tile
• Impervious to water
• Easy to maintain
• Variety of design options
• Environmentally friendly
• Resistant to germs and bacteria
• Fade resistant
• Fire resistant
• Durable – best long-term value vs. other floor coverings

That’s cool! I think the wood-look wall tile would be really great as a kitchen backsplash. I’m not sure why anyone would cover an entire wall in a non-wet area with it, though. Seems like it would be better to use actual wood, or maybe a laminate product for that since tile is so much more of a beast to remove. Anyway, yay for finding what you want for your fireplace! 🙂

Oh, it looks like those photos are supposed to be of restaurant type settings. I think it would be a great wall covering in a commercial space! 😀

Great choice! Are you going to do windows like the Photoshop picture? I know you have small windows now. Just curious.
That photo of the backsplash is awesome! Wish they had this when we did ours. But we are due for a redesign in the next few years, so maybe! Thanks for the research!

Hey Layla! Love the fireplace brick. I used Spanish Fort brick on my detached garage, and I love it. Great Choice! Love everything you do. Always.

Love the fireplace brick and I think an extra wash of grout would be just perfect. But I really LOVE that tile, it looks great on walls and I think it would be wonderful as flooring. I have to look into that. jonni

I wonder how it would look as a backsplash? I am looking for something “different”.
Also, what color blue did you use on your fireplace and on your “studio” door?
Thanks!

I just had to go and look at their brochure and it says “Both colors are offered in a unique 3’x26″ size that is suitable for every wall or floor that needs to be modernized with shabby chic style.” And did you see the American Flag tile that they make as well? It comes in an 18′ x 36″ or 24″ x 48″. Wonderful! I am so glad you shared this with us! I will have to look into it further! 🙂

I love those tile walls, but it would be very difficult to hang things on it, I think.

I’m guessing the finish is smooth, so 3M’s Command products would work to hang most things. No affiliation with 3M, just a happy customer! 🙂

I’m going to have to check out that Charleston tile. I could totally see using it all over the house….for floors, fireplace, and kitchen backsplash!
Thanks for always find such unique products Layla.

Hi Layla,
I just “commented” last night, but I had to again…lol
So because I was so intrigued by that tile you found, I ended up reading the online brochure, AND yes YEP…YIPPEE you can use it on floors. At the very bottom of the add it says you can.
Just thought you might want to know:) AND who knows MAYBEE you’ll be putting that tile in for some flooring someday, and we can read ALL about it!
Lisa 🙂

WOW! Love that tile and before I got to the bottom of your post I thought, hmmmm… I would love that as floor tile in our bathroom. Would be a total shame if it is only intended for walls. Keep us posted!
Your fireplace is going to be utterly warm and inviting!

Layla – I love your brick choice for the fireplace! In fact, the choices you’ve made throughout your home are so calming and relaxing that I want to crawl through the screen and have a cup of tea with you! What a wonderful home you have made!

My granddaughter and her husband totally remodeled a ranch style house. We’re talking structurally too, like adding an upstairs. Her family room is about 30’x30′. Really opened to the kitchen area with this gigantic island. Last March, days before moving in completely, they were having beautiful hardwoods put down. Houston weather. It was a very misting kind of rain. Sloppy. So humid. A few days after moving in, they saw the floor buckling. To make a long story short, up the floor came. It was all through the downstairs. She told me she was going to put tile down that had the look of wood. I’d seen it in stores but I am not usually a fan of faux stuff. So I winced at the idea. She is such a good decorator and I was concerned with that much floor space, it would distract from all her other lovely choices. But….when I saw it, I forgot it wasn’t really wood. It was beautiful! So beautiful, guess what it currently going down in my home? Yep! Wood looking tile floors. Mine is slightly more distressed than hers. We went with porcelain (as hers is) rather than ceramic. I understand that if it chips from dropping a heavy object, the color in the chip will be the same as the top. So be sure to consider that everyone. Wish I had seen the ones Layla found before my purchase. So many ideas!
hello haha narf
that tile is FABULOUS! swoon.
i also would love to know if it could be used as flooring…
hello haha narf
ha…just read the other comments and yaaaaaaaaay for flooring, too!

I saw this tile yesterday at the tile store while looking for a back splash. I am waiting for the samples to see what it will look like with my soapstone counter tops that I have already picked out for our kitchen. The lady looked at me like I was crazy thinking about putting this on my wall but I think it will be great. Wood bottom cabinets, cream tops, & charcoal/green counter tops; hope it all looks good first time where I am spending this much on a design I did. FYI have you thought of soapstone for above your fireplace? Would look really nice!
