Happy Monday, y’all!
I decided to have a tag sale and get rid of almost everything this week. I’m serious. Furniture, decor, clothing, bedding, drapes…you name it, if it feels fussy, tired or unnecessary, it probably has a tag on it right now. 🙂
All three of us seem to live better with less “stuff”, and after celebrating our Sonny boy’s Gotcha Day this past Saturday (Woo hoo! One year home!), we all decided it was time to clear some things out and (really) clean up the place for the first time since, well, last August.
In addition to “hushing” the house, we’re going to inject some new life into a few “old” rooms too. Our fam has new personality now, and I feel like this is the perfect time to snazz things up a bit. We started by painting the kitchen island yesterday. And by “we”, I do mean me, Kevin and Steevenson. He wouldn’t take no for an answer, and he actually did a really good job! 🙂 We still have another final coat to roll on, but here’s the new color as of right now:
It’s a mixture of Rockwood Blue Green and Billiard Green by Sherwin-Williams. (3/4 Rockwood Blue Green to 1/4 Billiard Green) We’re also planning to swap out the pendant lights, add some photos of Steevenson, add more backsplash tile, paint the (soon to be Stikwood-ed) wall Simply White, get new bar stools, and one day we’d love to bring in a white stove and fridge. (Dreamers gotta dream, right!?) Here’s a photo I put together in Photoshop to get inspired..minus the white appliances:
Oh- and I’d love to bring in my Homer Hardware rug in front of the sink when it’s produced next year too!
Here are a couple of the bar stools I’m looking at:
I loooove that second one. It reminds me of a vintage mattress or an old wire basket. I’m going to keep looking though, just in case I find something that will work better. Maybe I’ll do a separate blog post once I have a bunch of fun options lined up?
We went ahead and ordered the :
I ordered the ones with the thick rope, but I’m not sure I’ll like it as much as the (thinner) cords we have hanging there now, so we’ll have to see which ones look better when they get here.
As for today, Brian the Carpenter is coming over to help me install the beadboard in our bedroom. It’ll be so nice to finally have those old window holes covered up! I’ll be back with another update soon. Happy Eclipse!
Layla
PS- Here’s a little “1 Year Home” video Kevin put together to commemorate our special day this weekend if you’d like to watch. Kevin wrote and recorded the song it’s set to. 🙂

Thanks for showing us what you are working on right now! How about a tour of your in-laws new digs.

Watched Kevin’s video on instagram, so awesome! Loved his song! And I am loving the island color – it’s similar to our car siding color we are doing in our basement. We did a barn door, painted it kinda sloppy to look like a real barn door, and are working on two walls with the car siding that will also be done the same way. Although I’m considering doing the bigger wall in white – not sure yet. These walls will be on opposing walls, so I think one should not be the same. The barn door is almost halfway between. What would Layla do?

Layla, I don’t want to mess up your paring down, 🙂 but did you get my e-mail about the wood windows and plantation shutters? Just let me know, and they’re yours.
Layla
Hey Donna!
We’re all good in that department- thanks for checking with us though!
Lyndsey
Did I miss a post about the painting above your bed? I’m loving what I can see if it and I want to know more!

I’ve been following your decor page and adoption. We adopted 2 kiddos from the Congo and they have been home almost 2 years…also, we have a bio son named Sonny and I always refer to him as my Sonny boy! Thought that was funny…
Amanda
Love the new color on the island! And the video is so sweet! 🙂
Jenn

Emily
I’m with you on de-cluttering, you should check out Marie Kondo’s book if you haven’t already. I really like her perspective that you should only keep things in your house that “spark joy”. Can you do a Bungalow Barn update? I feel like we haven’t seen it in awhile, or maybe I missed it?
Amanda Smothers
Layla,
I’m in Troy so if you’re having a sale, I’d love to see what you’ve got. I love, love, love your style!
Lauren
Omgosh I am IN LOVE with that island, that green all the heart eyes. Can’t wait to see more and OMOGSH did you win the rug competition?! Im so behind…CONGRATULATIONS if you did! That’s amazing.

Tonya
Adorable! Such cute faces. Good job Kevin. Great vibes from the music.
Katie
What color white did you use in the master?
Maria from Oz
I am loving that colour! I am really keen on greeny-blues right now, and yours looks terrific!
The room looks more peaceful in your mock up. I can imagine it with the stools and the white appliances (funny how trends go back to basics!)
Congratulations on your first year as a family!
Gayla
That color is really nice.
I’m just curious…..with most people seeming to switch over to stainless appliances, what is your reason for wanting white?
We are looking at a kitchen remodel in the next year and I’m not sure what we will go with. We currently have older white appliances, but my husband wants stainless.
Layla
Oh, I just like the airiness/freshness of the color white vs. the color gray. That, and there are so many pretty white appliances on the market now! 🙂

This song & video brought tears to my eyes. What a beautiful blessing!!!
Danielle
