Cottage Kitchen Update – Milk Painted Secretary

Jul 2, 2014 By Layla

Remember the secretary I painted and planned to use in the sunroom? Well, it’s in the kitchen now. 🙂

Heather Gray Island | Gray Owl Wall Paint | Cottage Kitchen

I never really did end up using it as a full-time computer desk, so I thought I’d try it over here for a while.

I can still pull a small stool up to it when I want to write out a thank you or hello card/need to address an envelope/write a check, etc., but it can also house some kitchen stuff, too.

There’s more than enough room to walk around it (I should’ve taken a photo of it from the side- oops!), and I think I might hang a piece of art or photography above it sometime, too.

The only thing left to do is re-paint it. Yep- I’ve been wanting to change it to a mint-y green for a while now, and my friend Marian is creating a custom shade of milk paint to coordinate with our (Heather Gray) island as I type. I’m also hoping she has time to help me add some of her beautiful hand-painted details on the sides of it when she comes to town this Fall.

Oh yeah! Have you heard? The guys that own the chapel are hosting The Chapel Market this year and Miss Mustard Seed will have a booth again this year!

The Chapel Market 14

This one’s going to be on Saturday, October 25th, and I’ll publish another post with more details about it soon. Hope to see you there! 🙂

    Hello!
I have been stalking the ming green sunflower tile online, and just found your site!
Your kitchen is beautiful. I’m so glad I stumbled upon you. Could you tell me who you ordered your tile through? I found it at one online vendor, but he is being very vague about the cost.
    Thanks!

I really like it there…and does your pea calendar make you think of your Sweet Pea? 🙂 The magazine holder on the side is a great and clever idea!

Where o where did you get that magazine rack? I love it and I love the secretary in the kitchen. I think the green will be awesome when you get it painted.

I’ve been looking for a secretary like that forever!! I love anything that is beautiful on the outside and can store things. Downsizing is the pits!! I thought it would make things easier — I miss the size of our family house.

I LOVE the “spooning” display. What a great gift that would make for a new couple. Can I ask where you got it?

I love the secretary in the kitchen… who would have thought that could look so “in place” in a kitchen! You inspire me! Be sure to post it again after you paint it the minty green.

    Oh Layla……
This kitchen keeps getting better and better. You ease into slow mode……….I bang thru a kitchen at warp speed. You go all soft, and deliberate and sweet……….I am hot, firey, red and bold aqua. If it’s black or red, I love it. Carumba!!!!
How did you learn to slow yourself down and make auch BEAUTIOUS things?????
    I am loving the kitchen.
I would look like a big bull in there.
    I need Layla Lessons.

It looks gorgeous in there and I’m so jealous you have a kitchen big enough to fit a piece like that in there! If I did that, it would take up 3/4 of the walking space in ours! Living vicariously. 😉

I actually love it gray, it seems to go perfectly with the gray in your kitchen. But since you don’t seem to make a mis-step, the mint will probably be gorgeous.

Love the natural wood tones. They really make the fotos look natural and calm.

The piece looks like it belongs and adds to the total look of your kitchen. (My favorite part of the photos, however, is your kitty cat just hanging out. I love how they do that.)

I love how it looks in your kitchen! And the basket on the side is such a fun detail. The whole kitchen has turned out to be amazing. I want to copy the whole thing for my own. 🙂

Good Morning Layla, do you mind giving me the source for the wall basket holding the magazines. I am looking for something to hold my Kitchen Paper placemats. Thanks, and love seeing all you are up to!

    • Layla

      Jul 2, 2014 at 9:28 am

Hi Miriam! I picked that up at a local flea market a few years back. You might try searching the web or Etsy for “wire hanging wall basket” or something like that! 🙂

Layla, I have become a big fan of you and your blog. My husband and I have been longstanding member of FBC and know your mother in law, Katie.
I’m assuming you live at The Waters. We have a lot there but are waiting and waiting for our over 100 year old house to sell in The Garden District.
You are sooo very talented. Keep up the good work.

It looks great in that spot! And I’m glad you’re doing a shade of green. I was a wee but disappointed when you went with blue-grey for the island instead. Although it looks amazing and will probably be more livable over the long term. Keep doing what you’re doing, girl. It’s amazing !!!

Gorgeous!! The secretary adds even more character to your already lovely kitchen…feeling so inspired to paint our secretary in our living room! : ) Did your secretary belong to your grandparents? Mine was the desk my dad used when I was little, and I found the tiny pink baby arm band from when I was born in one of the little drawers…so sweet. I will have to give my dad a hug for keeping it in there : ) I love the classic beauty of secretaries… yours looks so pretty painted gray, and I know will look so pretty that new shade of minty green too!

Oh no, I’m disappointed at the date scheduled for The Chapel Market. My sister and I go to the Country Living Festival in Atlanta every year and the market has now been scheduled that same weekend again. 🙁 Maybe it’s worth mentioning to the market planners — seems like the people who attend one would like to go to the other too.

    • Layla

      Jul 2, 2014 at 1:47 pm

I was bummed about that too, Alecia. Unfortunately that’s the only weekend that would work this year.

When will the new milk paint color be available? Also, where did you find your wood roman shades. I have been trying to find some that look like that for months! WHERE DO I FIND THEM?? Thanks! Hope to hear back!

Looks Beautiful Layla!! 🙂 I was wondering if you had posted a tutorial for when you originally painted the secretary? I was just given a secretary by my aunt that I have been wanting to refinish. I am leaning heavily towards the idea of milk paint too, but am kinda scared since I ‘ve never actually refinished anything before… Any pointers?

    • Layla

      Jul 3, 2014 at 2:38 pm

Thanks, Tami! I never did a tutorial post, but Marian’s got oodles of awesome ones over at her blog! She’s the “pointer sister”, for sure! 😀

Oh, what a sweet set up that is! What color is the Secretary now? I sure do love it, and see the need for a change to compliment the kitchen now! I just love the sweet lavender, grey, blue tones and would love to paint a piece I have a similar color. So, what might that be?!!!
