Bungalow Barn Update: Simply White Farmhouse

Nov 3, 2016 By Layla

Well, what recently looked like this…

barn-house-in-progress-board-and-batten

…now looks like this:

barn-addition-at-sunset

That’s Benjamin Moore’s “Simply White” on the back side of our “farmhouse”, and man do I wish we had photographed it at a different time of day- LOL! 😀 Kevin snapped that one just before the sunset went down last night. I’ll take another one earlier in the day tomorrow so you can see how pretty it looks all red, white and blue!

Anywho- the painters still need to finish painting the back door (some kind of blue), the doors at the end of the barn (red), and the skirting and ramp (dark brown), but other than that- the exterior (and interior) painting is almost done! I played around with the photo in Photoshop to show what the rest of the colors (and some grass!) will eventually look like:

I’m looking forward to having the driveway cleared off again soon too. Ya know…so we can park our tractor back there again. 😉

Wow! What a charming addition! Maybe Steevenson needs a pedal tractor and trailer for that driveway?
I love all of your color choices, the red barn is such a warm greeting you just have to smile when you pull in the driveway!
    Have a wonder filled weekend!

It seems like this is taking a long time Layla. When do they get to move in?

For real, right? We were told it would take 2-3 months for the entire build process and they were supposed to start building in March, but didn’t actually start til May. :-/ I’m not sure when it’ll actually be finished because there is still so much left to do and we are at the mercy of the subcontractors (busy) schedules.

Sooo Cute!!! May I ask what type of paint was used for the exterior over the vinyl siding?? Can’t wait to see the front as well ???

I would love to hear about painting over vinyl siding too. Also, what shade of red did you pick?

      I want to move in!

It’s actually Hardi-plank (not vinyl siding) and the red is Caliente by Benjamin Moore.

      It’s not vinyl siding, it’s Hardi-plank. 😉

I thought your exterior windows were tan? We’re those painted as well or were they already white? I inherited tan vinyl replacement windows (inside and out) and I’m struggling with how to deal with them. Help!!

      Nov 4, 2016 at 10:10 am

Yep- they were tan, but the painters painted them white. 🙂

I had never seen a barn attached to a house (not many barns in Southern California :), but I LOVE it! You must be thrilled at how great it is turning out.

Cute! I think the barn doors and barn window should stay white … instead of red. Just my opinion.

I look forward to these updates each week! And the white on your home….absolutely stunning!! How patient you’ve been bearing with the tan all these years….the color completes the look!!!

Did they paint the entire house or just the back?

Also, does the breakfast room addition dampen the sunlight in your piano/sunroom? That would be sad, but so gracious of you to sacrifice that so your father in law could have that extra space!

I have a tacky question… I hope you don’t take offense. How much does something like this cost? I am considering building on to our house so my parents can live with us but am not sure if its even in the realm of possibility.

      Hi Laura!
I better keep Jim and Katie’s specific financial stuff private, but it seems like most builders they talked to were in the $65-$135/sq ft range.

We just got our first quote. 208-310 per square foot! Our area of the country is expensive!

I can’t believe anyone ever thought this house should be anything but white. Your vision has come to life and it is so beautiful.

Love it! I had a area like yours with a concrete drive and I placed three large galvanized cattle water tanks in front of the new addition and planted them with cone boxwood shrubs. I thought it would help with people backing into the house etc.

Love it. IF you still haven’t made a choice for the blue door, Erin, over at “House of Turquoise just had a post about blue doors this week.
