It’s FriYAY!!!!! 😀
Kevin and I are in full-on cleaning/packing/running errand mode, but I wanted to share a fun update about the Bungalow Barn today. It’s got a new coat, y’all…Benjamin Moore’s Caliente!
Excuse the temporary overhead power line, the still-not-fixed barn doors on the end of the barn (they were supposed to be X’ed, not filled with board & batten), and the extra brick that was delivered by mistake. And speaking of works in progress, one day we’ll add a small deck around the breakfast room/entry, too.
I’m so excited to see what it all looks like when our house is painted white! I used Photoshop to alter the photo above, just to see what it’s going to look like when we get home from Haiti:
Here’s a closer-up look at the breakfast room/entry:
I hadn’t really thought about what color the back door would be until I snapped that picture earlier this week. What do you think? Black? Blue?
(Added some more grass in there just for kicks, too!)
Another color? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Lorraine Richie
I really liked the black but then I scrolled to the blue…..gah!!! I love them both!!
Katie@J&KHomestead
Love the softness of the blue next to the bold red barn. The color also plays off the metal roof nicely. And it coordinates with the inside of your house. Blue all the way!!! 🙂
And the red barn is beautiful!
Laura C
I agree!

My farmhouse door is painted Inkwell, by Sherwin Williams. I love it!

Black! Or a dark navy blue, to help ground everything like another reader said.
I do love that colour blue you have pictured (I’ve got many pieces in my own home that colour), but it competes with the red a bit too much. If you eventually do a little covered porch, you could always paint the ceiling of the porch blue.
H
Beautiful!! Love that red! I vote black or dark blue (like newburyport blue by Ben Moore) though not sure if that would be too Americana with the red and white!
Cara
How timely, my husband and I are having the exact same discussion on door color. We are building a small farmhouse with a metal roof and white board and batten siding. Eventually we will build a detached garage/barn with red board and batten siding. I think we are going with light blue, but am really debating black or a soft yellow. There is a rendering on my website.
Gail
I say a real dark Navy blue or red. Love the whole extension.
Cathy Farmer
Navy
Karen
I like the blue – looks good with your roof.
Gaynell
Love the blue as well. It does look good with the roof. And such a happy color!
Sylvia
I’d go with the blue – it does bring out the color of the roof and goes surprisingly well with the red
Sarah
Going classic black would be my choice. Think about all seasonal door decor and potted summer plants….never goes wrong with black. You have a traditional red “barn” and traditional white farm house…black door completes it!
Anita
I like the blue. What color is that? I want to paint my front door that color blue.
Vicki v
Looks great! How about charcoal gray for door? A little softer than black.
Christy
Charleston Green!
Ashlea
I love it all!!! This is SO exciting! I think that blue door looks just about perfect 🙂
Melissa
The blue really lightens it up. It is lovely!
Rebecca
My vote is blue too!
Catherine
My vote is the lighter blue! It’s a very happy and inviting color!
Debby
I love the blue you put in the photo! Looks happy and welcoming!
Sherrie
Black or slate-grey.
Good luck these next few weeks (and years ?). It is a wonderful journey that I have been so grateful to experience.
Sandra
I am lovin’ the red barn!!! My front door is painted with ICI 1485 – Noble Gray. It has a bluish hue and I think it would go well with your design.
Wishing you safe travels to Haiti and back as a family of three!
Suzanne
Blue…. I love that blue with the red.., what is the paint code for that blue
Rachel
I love the black door!
Kay
Blue! The black seems like a dark hole. The blue is happy and says come on in!
Judith
Love the black door!
Sandy
How about navy blue? That would be my first choice. Hi
Beth Schultz
Definitely the blue! I really enjoy following your journey.
Sue
Love the blue you have pictured, I know the darker colors mentioned will work well with the barn color too, but I agree, keep it light, you seem to have some shade here. In The evening and it might lighten up the space a bit if you kept it lighter. I don’t mind the idea of a yellow, sunflower comes to mind too… Everything you do is so thought out and always so pretty. In the end, it is all about you and your family…maybe ask…what would Sonny like to see in colors? Does he have favorite? Paint can always be changed too ?
Susan
I lean more to the black or gray as some has suggested. It would have to be the right gray, but you would know which one to choose 🙂
Colleen
Definitely the blue… so you! I heard once that there should be a hint of what is inside your house on the outside. That hint of blue on the door gives a glimpse of the colors you love on the inside…
Either way it is going to look great!! LOVE THE BARN!!
Will be praying for your trip… SO EXCITED FOR YOU!!
Jan
The black helps to make the door pop and work as a focal point–you want the entrance to be a focal point. I think that black would be a more classic look than using a dark navy, as other suggested. I really like the color of blue you used for the other option, but it makes the door disappear and your eyes don’t know where to land. If you love the blue color, maybe paint the front porch ceiling with that same “haint blue” to give the house a real southern farmhouse feel? Whatever you decide, the exterior is going to be lovely.
Rhonda
Black for sure! Will look great with every season/decor

I thought for sure I would say black – but I actually LOVE the blue. I vote blue! 😀
Ann Geistfeld
Black.
Jane Huey
Definitely blue… Looks happy!

Layla
The “Blue” it looks so light and airy! The blue goes so well with your roof. The black looks like a black hole. I think Kaye, above commented like this. I always love your decor, but Not the black door. Thanks for this update especially during your busy time. Praying for a joyful and safe trip for your family!
Sherri
Black or a stronger blue…maybe a navy or inky blue. The light blue looks a little “weak” against the red.
Melissa
Is that back door taller than a standard? If not would you mind sharing where you got it from?
Kate Carney
I like the blue matching with the metal roof. I think the black is too strong. I like the softness it brings against the stark white and strong red.
Layla
The metal roof is actually silver, but I do like how it “speaks” to the blue too, Kate! 🙂

A wood door would be so beautiful, could you paint it a brown tone to maybe be equivalent to wood? Looks great!
Megan M
The light blue door is so “Layla”!!! When I see it paired with red, it reminds me of your decorating style 100%. I love it and can’t wait to see it come together. 🙂
Tina Ramer
Love the blue! So excited for you guys trip to bring Sonny home! Several of our relatives
have done mission work in Haiti. What a blessing it is that you finally get to bring Sonny
to his new perfect home!
Colleen
Love the blue. Bright yellow would be cute. The barn looks so adorable
Susan
You need another blue….try BM Nimbus Gray. It’s a blue gray that will play better with the Caliente. The one you show has green fighting with the red. Just try it. Thank me later! ⭐️
Ann
I think I might paint that door the same red as the barn addition!
Sandy
Love the blue!!!!

Blue! Blue!
I love that color with the red!
