“Friday night football is king.
Sweet tea goes good with anything.
The fireflies come out when the sun goes down.
Nobody eats ’til you say amen.
and everybody knows your mom and them.
You can see who loves who for miles around…
…in a water tower town.”
–Â Scotty McCreery
3pm. That’s what time the sky shows up in photographs of the Bungalow Barn right now!
Kevin snapped that one Friday afternoon and I am loving the way those colors looks together! #RedWhiteAndBlue
The painters haven’t painted the sides or front of our house yet, (see the unpainted little roof and railing sticking off the left side there?), but after waiting 4 years for it to be Simply White, I’m just happy to see one side finished now. 🙂
I am eager to see the ramp and skirting go dark brown-black this week though. I think having a dark color down there will really ground and tie the whole place together. Someone also suggested we ask the painters to paint the (gray) utility meters Simply White (like the house) and I think that’s such a great idea!
All we need now is a silo, right? 😉
I actually did some searching to see if there might be a way to incorporate something fun and farm-y (and small!) for Steevenson and his neighborhood friends to play on/in, and while I was searching, I came across this reeeeally cool country-style play house, complete with old-fashioned water tower slide:

Isn’t that spectacular?! It’s a 250-square-foot remake of the oldest dance hall in Texas:

Surely we can find room to squeeze in an old-fashioned water tower or silo slide somewhere, right? #BatsEyesAtHusband

It was so fun to discover that the folks that made the “Grace Hall” playhouse and water tower (Lilliput Play Homes) have been busy creating lots of other amazing play houses too. Check these out:

All those cute little details, but honestly, I bet this one would be Steevenson’s favorite:

I’m still rooting for room for a water tower though. 😉

PS- My Sunday/Monday online LuLaRoe pop-up is still up and active if you’d like to swing by and see what’s in my inventory this week!

Hey Layla,
I love reading your barn updates and about sweet Steevenson. Everything looks so great together and like it was always that way.
I knew as soon as I saw that little Grace hall that it was mimicking Gruene Hall. I live 15 minutes from there. 😉 such a fun little town to walk around in. Y’all will have to come visit.
We live in a similar set up with my mom living in a small cottage behind our house. It’s such a blessing to have her so close.
Have a great day!
Cheryl
A word of caution on painting the utility meters. Here in VA they are considered the property of the utility company & no alteration can be made to them without the consent of the owner which they never grant bc they want workers to readily identify them. The consequences can be you pay to have them replaced.
Erika
Was going to mention this. Our house painters did tackle the breaker box and a few other things, but I believe the water meter was a no-go on being able to paint. The painters should know for sure!
LOVE that water tower slide combo. PLEASE, Mr. K! 🙂

Loving your house in white. That first picture was awesome – the sky was a perfect blue!
Those playhouses are gosh-dang cute. I had always wanted a playhouse when I was little, but I settled for my brothers’ treehouse when they got too old for it. Took my Barbies up there with a lunch and drink, and spent the whole day up there!
I bet you can figure out a spot for a silo slide – maybe commandeer a smal part of the parking area?
I was tempted on several items on both sales this w/e, but had just had a shopping spree last week! #desperationfallwear! Must save up for the next one! But I loved the black/white Randy and will watch for it later!
Hi to Kevin and Steevenson!

Those playhouses….wow! The clubhouse is the bomb. You will surely come up with something fabulous and perfectly fitting for Sonny. 🙂 Can’t wait to see!

OMG – your Bungalow Barn definitely needs the water tower slide! That would be the icing on the cake with something printed on the side to make it more personal! Can’t wait to see an update on the inside!
Lindsay Jenson
Oh, I LOVE the water tower slide! I need to find a place for that in my back yard! And I love the construction playhouse. That would be my boys favorite. How creative!
Crystal
It has to be me, but I don’t see the blue. Are you referencing the sky?
Maybe I need to go back to bed.
Layla
Yep! Such a pretty view! 🙂
Angela
The slide would be so perfect for your backyard! Hope y’all can figure out a way to incorporate it into your design.

How fun it is to watch your dreams become a reality-You do life with such grace.
It’s evident you don’t take a single blessing for granted—that makes your journey so fun to follow.
Wishing all the best in life, love & family-
Margot
I’m just curious if it was difficult to get the homeowner’s association to approve the red barn?
Layla
Nope! Our architect is on the HOA board! 🙂
Ria
Gosh! Gone are the days when a large cardboard box and a ton of crayons made a cubby/play house! Good grief, I can’t believe kids these days are so spoilt for choices!
Oh well, maybe I am just too old to keep on believing in imagination.
On another grumpy note (it’s just morning here and I haven’t had my first cuppa yet!) here in Australia is it illegal to paint or otherwise deface any of the utilities. I suspect it will be the same there in US.
The pic Kevin took is lovely! Reminds me of the blue skies we get here, when we see them, been raining for months on and off here. So weird for this time of year to be so cold and wet. That barn is making me want to get out and get on with my building project……right after that first cuppa though. 😉
Layla
Oh, I think those play houses are *very* imaginative and I’m sure they inspire LOTS of creativity too!
I’ll have to do some checking about the utility boxes. I thought it was our painter (who works mainly in this neighborhood) who told me we should paint them in the first place.

We didn’t have much money when I was growing up and my sister and I created our own playhouse inside a circle of willow trees. We placed boards in between the tree trunks for counters and shelves and made mud pies, sometimes borrowing an egg from the chicken house to make the mud pies shiny, and decorating the tops with weed seeds.
Wendi
This momma of one boy and granny to 3 grandsons knows little boys like tree houses best.
Layla
Ooh- that would be awesome, but we don’t have (or have room for) any big trees on our lot. Only around the neighborhood, and the HOA doesn’t allow us to build in those. 🙂

I keep thinking of a treehouse structure with circular slide coming off the back of the barn and accessible through the barn loft or with a ladder outside. It could be stylized to look like a silo. We have a huge yard and opted for a huge screenhouse with deck constructed as a stage. Every kid we know enjoyed camping out or performing out there.
