Kathy’s Wood-Walled Bathroom

Nov 11, 2013 By Layla

Last week, I blogged about our new (white) wood wall, and told you I’m helping my friend Kathy decorate a room in her house.

Today, I’m blogging about a room with (white) wood walls at Kathy’s house! 😀 It’s her master bathroom, and it’s one of my favorite rooms in her house. Check it out:

…and don’t even get me started on the master bedroom next door:

I love the hardwood floor. It adds such warmth with the all white walls and cabinets. I also like the feet on the bottom of the cabinets, what a great idea!

Thank you for praying for those affected by typhoon Haiyan. I noticed that you listed some organizations that will be helping, and I would like to add Samaritan’s Purse to the list. http://www.samaritanspurse.org
They not only offer help with physical needs during times of disaster, but also minister to their greatest need… to know Jesus.

Thank you, Colleen! Yes, the page I linked to was just the one I found through watching The Today Show this morning. I’m so thankful for ALL the organization’s joining in on the relief effort, and appreciate you mentioning Samaritan’s Purse here, too! 🙂

I may have to go curl up in Kathy’s bedroom and take a nap. Ya think she would think that’s weird? I absolutely love the bedroom. The ceiling is awesome!

I love the look of the planked walls in the bathroom! I have wanted to do this in ours but my husband is worried about mold building up? Is that an issue or did you do anything to treat the walls ahead of time? Thanks! This room is lovely!

I’ve wondered this, too, Laura. I wanted to put beadboard in my small master bath but my husband is convinced it’s a recipe for mold/mildew disaster. I’ve seen lots of bathrooms with wood or beadboard but they seem to be guest baths so aren’t used daily. Would love to hear from someone who uses the shower daily about how the wood handles the moisture.

The master bathroom in my old house had beadboard all around it including around the freestanding tub where I bathed the kiddos (in other words….lots of water splashes). We never once had a problem with mold or mildew in the five years we were there. It was painted with gloss latex paint. I’m definitely going to use it again in my current bath when I get to its remodel. Hope that helps!

I can’t even tell you how much I love that bathroom. And the make up vanity….. yeah. Can’t wait to see what you are up to in the other room. 🙂

And Kim, I have had beadboard in my bath for 8 years without any issues at all but we have exceptional insulation.

Theresa, I provided the floors that went in that house. They are antique heart pine that came out of the Helena Curtis building in Chicago. 🙂
Another note of interest, they used an exterior grade plywood as the sub-wall painted absolute flat black before the planks went up. That gives you the great depth/definition when the boards begin to shrink. Great look!

    Layla,
As always….thank you for opening our eyes to new design and more importantly the world beyond design…..balance is the key to a successful life!

Can you please let us know what type of flooring that is in Kathy’s bathroom? Thank You. God Bless

Hi Layla. I am a very avid follower of your blog, and I am also Filipino from Central Philippines–Haiyan’s (in the Philippines, it was called Yolanda) hardest hit. 90% of all the homes and livelihood in my hometown are totally damaged by the storm. Seeing you paying a tribute to the victims even from here in the US means a lot!! Thank you for that and God bless you.

Wow! That is a serious bathroom. I think I could fit half my house in there 🙂 Love the white and wood combo.
I noticed there have been heaps of questions about the floor. It looks like a type of reclaimed pine to me though I’m not certain.
I echo your sentiments about the Philippines disaster.

Layla, thanks for posting this bathroom. I bought white cabinets for our master bath and have been second guessing myself ever since!!! They sill are sitting in our living room boxed up. I was SCARED to death that they would look horrible with the tile I had purchased (which is also in our living room!!!) I love this calm look. I guess I need to find someone to do the work and get the bathroom back in shape. Thanks!!!

Just made a donation in your honor, Layla. So good and decent of you to remind people. I’ve been so caught up in my own “stuff” lately, that I didn’t even THINK to donate for the typhoon, so I am happy you gave the Today Show links (I donated to the Red Cross,/chose for my donation going to the typhoon). Blessings to you and Kevin. As my mother used to say: “The Good Lord will reward you a hundred-fold.”
    Best,
    Gloria

Layla, I live in Texas, which isn’t that far from you. Most everyone here has their houses decorated in really dark earth tones, with very heavy fabrics and furnishings, (but I don’t, I prefer the cottage style) You show these beautiful homes in your neighborhood, that don’t seem to be the same style I see here, I’m just curious, do you see alot of cottage style where you are? Do you see any of the style I’m talking about? I’m so tired of it, I want everyone to lighten their houses up! 🙂

    Totally drooling.

So curious about the floor…. I just had my shower and toilet replaced and the floor took quite a beating and I’ll probably need to replace it soon. I’m not a fan of tile but love this!

The bathroom is beautiful and I love the wood walls and floors. The size blows me away though. I’m pretty sure I could put our bathroom in there three or four times. Haha!

I want to live in that bathroom. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I share a single bathroom with 5 guys. I would weep for a fresh, clean, white bathroom all to myself.

Hi Layla! Just curious where the mirrors came from for the bathroom. They’re beautiful and exaclty what I’ve been looking for to use in my bedroom. Thanks! Emily
