Master Bedroom Makeover Plans

Apr 7, 2016 By Layla

Happy Friday, friend! 😀

I haven’t vlogged in a while, and we’re about to tackle our master bedroom makeover, so I thought it would be fun to tell you what we’ve got in the works over here today. Click the play button below to have a look-see/listen-ee. 😉

…and for those who can’t/don’t want to watch the video: remember when I told you we hadn’t done a thing to our master bedroom since the day we moved in? Well, here are the pics to prove it:

The walls, trim and ceiling are still their original color, and it’s filled with a hodge podge of furniture we brought over from our previous place. We did put up the (temporary) paper blinds and Schoolhouse Electric wall sconces from our last house, but that’s about it as far as attaching things goes. We’re coming up on our 4th year in this house this October though, and with Steevenson coming home later this summer, I’m reeeeally ready to start personalizing this room! #nesting

Kevin and I took some time to map out a plan for it a couple of days ago. Here are some of the things we’d like to do:

  • paint the ceiling and trim (we have lots of leftover Simply White paint we can mix together)
  • paint the walls and create faux planks (more about this in a future post!)
  • replace the paper blinds (I’m partnering with SelectBlinds.com on this project and you’re welcome to use my Lettered Cottage 40% off discount code if you’re in the market for window treatments too. Just click on that link and type the word TRANSFORM at checkout. You can use it in conjunction with their Buy 3 Get 1 Free sale, too!)
  • remove the L-shaped desk and create a different kind of/less obvious-looking/more functional home office area on the wall opposite the bed
  • bring in our old nightstands
  • replace the rug with the rolled up Dash & Albert rug on the left side of that last photo
  • bring in inexpensive curtain rods and curtains
  • hang artwork/photography (much of which is currently on the floor and leaning against walls around the house!)
  • move the existing IKEA dresser to another wall (and at some point, add another dresser on the wall opposite it so we can each have our own)

I look forward to sharing some work-in-progress shots with you next Friday!

Your enthusiasm in the video brightened my corner of the world. I hope it turns out like you envision. Thanks for sharing.

How exciting! Can’t wait to see how it all comes together! We left our master till last too. I guess you tend to make over the rooms you spend more ‘awake time’ in?. Good luck and good idea to get it done before the munchkin arrives.
    All the best

Visitors/Guests generally don’t see our master bedroom, therefore for that reason I think we just neglect it.

This is why I watch! I love that you are going to mix paint together and do this on a shoestring. I gasped when you said you were going to change the ceiling and trim. Those are my favorite bits right now (other than that amazing rug.) Your ideas always work out gorgeously so I’m going to sit back and trust your process. (easy for me since I don’t have to lift a finger) and prepare to be awestruck. :).

And to hear you say that your son will be home this summer, happy tears.

Holy exciting bedroom redecorating times Batman! 😀 Here I was waiting for he results of Carlie’s bedroom makeover and woohoo another bedroom makeover! I seriously love your blog honey.

I can’t watch the video so THANK YOU for the photos and writings. The rest of your house is so beautiful, I’m shocked your bedroom hasn’t been touched yet. But its also neat that we get to be a long for the ride now. I love to see function and beauty come together.

And getting it done before Sweet P comes, home?! Excellent! I’m SO excited for you guys!!!!

The perk of waiting so long to redo your master bedroom is that i’m sure you’ve spent many nights lying in bed dreaming of how you want it to look. I look forward to seeing the transformation. 🙂

I love everything y’all do! I know the room will be perfect. I also can’t wait to see the barn when completed. You have some lucky in-laws.
I still crack up every time I think about the post where the lady said you looked so small standing next to your fireplace. I have referred to you as “little Layla” every since! I’m so excited about your baby coming home soon and seeing more post about him.
    Love from Texas!

I’ve got a ton of stuff, mostly painted furniture, in my booth at Eastbrook Flea Market. #49, downstairs on the left, Saltmarsh Design. Let me know if there’s anything that is of interest.

Hi Sara, I’m not Layla :), but I remember when they got the bedding. It’s from Pottery Barn, but no longer available. You might be able to find it on ebay (maybe). Here’s the post she wrote about it: https://theletteredcottage.net/window-treatments-for-the-master-bedroom/

I totally cringed when I heard you say you were going to mix the paint. I’ve heard people regret that long term, but I also get why you’re doing it. You want the room done, on budget, before Sonny gets home. Its going to be awesome like the rest of the house. I’m Excited to see what you pull together.

I’ll be watching!!! We just did our masterbedroom, we moved in three years ago and have never, ok in 33 years had a finished bedroom. Crazy. I have done every room from walls, floors to adding a new bath room. We have it done other then the planked stair wall and purchasing a rug. Loving it.

Yay! I’m looking forward to watching you put it together! I can’t believe y’all have lived there for four years already. I remember the master in your old house, and you made it really beautiful. I’m currently planning my own master bedroom makeover, so your timing is perfect! 😉

I recently installed curtains and had 33 windows to cover. I needed something that would hold heavy curtains and look industrial vintage. Found some at Pottery Barn and they were offering 15% off at the time. They were the most affordable that had character and weight I could find. I recently got a 20 or 25% off notification from PB so maybe a better deal now. i really have enjoyed your story especially about the son that will be there before you know it!

Oh this is perfect! It’s always SO fun following along as you transform your home! And since everything you touch looks gorgeous I hope to use some of your tips as I transform a bedroom here in our old house as well! (It’s currently painted two shades of blue ever since our son’s high school days and these were the colors he picked. ?) Also, when I saw your description “builder’s beige” or “baby diaper poo” I realized that’s the color I used in a room off our living room. UGH!! Now I really want to transform those walls too! And I agree- now’s the perfect time to do it- before Sweet Pea comes home!

You are just so sweet Layla, I always like your vlogs I am excited to see what you do in this room! Isn’t it weird how we always leave our most fav rooms till last? I guess its because the rooms we see and use most and also guests use most we want done first?
