Hi, friends!
Ignore the still-under-construction wall, oversized chandelier and plastic folding table, but check out the great new rug we got from Rugs USA!
Here’s a close-up:
It’s the Treasures ZG09 Persian Vintage Rug and I just love it! It’s so soft underfoot and the pattern and colors are right up my alley.
I’m still not sure about what to use as a desk, but I know I’ll find the perfect thing eventually. As for the light fixture, I’d love to use an old chandelier like my friend Rachel has, too:
And I’ve seriously been contemplating the idea of bringing in a wing-backed settee because:
a) Steevenson loves to sit next to me and “work”
b) Kit-Cat loves to sit next to me and sleep
c) the area is wide enough to accomodate one
d) if I use a wide work table (vs. a desk that might not be as wide), a settee wouldn’t look as puny as one chair would
Here’s what that would sort of look like:
(Obviously the that’s not to scale, and please excuse the sloppiness!)
…and, in case you’re wondering, here’s the settee I popped in the picture:
I’d love to find a table that has straight legs at least half way down though. That way, I could attach some kind of spandrel (like this)…
…to the table to make it look more like a desk, and hiding the cord from my computer would be easier too:
I’ve already hit up four local flea markets, but I haven’t found exactly what I’m looking for yet. I’ll keep searching though. That’s my favorite part! 😀

Layla, the rug is beautiful! How would you describe the color……. Aqua blue? Powder blue?
Layla
Thank you! I think it leans a little more aqua than powder blue.

Have you tried Amy’s on North Blvd? Another thought would be to use an old door as a desk. Though it may be too long. Like the other’s, Amy’s is hit or miss but I’ve seen more farm style tables there than other places. Good luck!!
Layla
Oh, yes! I blogged about it on Friday if you’d like to check out that post! XO

Soooo pretty and an exciting project! I know time and $$ limit how many things you can do in your home but I love it when I know you are doing a new space! I have been reading for so long it feels like I am getting something new too habha! ❤️❤️

Rugs USa is great! … Somehow you have to be able to sit down and stand up. Will the settee be light enough or move every time? Or will you move your desk with everything on it?
Becky
I think the idea of the settee is a great one but if that doesn’t work maybe just a special stool or chair for your son; one that you could pull up beside you more easily. I absolutely love the idea of adding the spandrel to the desk. That would be lovely.
Kelly
I love the idea of a settee! What a great idea!

When I set up my office and my kids were little, I got two desks – one for me and one for my kids. I have an office chair with wheels and for their desk, I got a wooden bench so they could both sit and ‘work’ with me. The desks are set up as an L shape so if I’m sitting at my desk, my kids are to the left of me. I also covered the top of the desks with pieces of glass to protect the desk top and also so we could display some of their artwork underneath the glass. I still have this set up today – my kids are teens and still sit down next to me with their laptop or just sit down to talk with me. I treasure it!

My husband ended up preferring an older dining room table as his desk because of the open leg room. It also has more work area than most desks – and might be less $. The settee would help cover any needed functional items underneath if placed on the opposite side.🙂
Nikki
I am in LOVE with the current light fixture! I know it’s not what you are going for with the look of the room but it’s all I could look at in the pictures! Let me know if you are going to sell it!

I love the settee idea but moving it out would be a pain! What if you added a nice sturdy poof next to your desk? Steevenson could pull it up and being little wouldn’t mind kneeling and working next to you. And it could tuck right under your table and allow the cat to curl up as well.
Peg
The issue of moving the settee was the first thing that I thought of.
Marilyn
what size is your rug? I’m always debating on what size to order. I need one to place under a large ottoman with two chairs.

Hey Layla! Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but I have this desk and love it! It’s nice a nice blend of a table and a desk that looks great from all angles. It’s wide enough for 2 chairs or you could pull the little side table out for Steevenson when he wants to join you ;). Best of luck!

I love the work space you will have. Lots of light. I love your desk idea. I was noticing your beautiful plate arrangement on the wall, I copied your cat door too for same reason you had needed one….anyway, I think the wall needs an “S” now. I think it would compliment the design and your growing family. 🙂
Layla
Oh! That reminds me! His name is actually already up there! I’ll have to snap a closer pic. 🙂
Kathleen
I should have figured you would have already done that!

You can always add castors to the settee legs…
angela
just put wheels on the settee.
sandyc
Nix the settee. Not only because it would be a big pain in the butt to move back and forth but it would also probably be a literal pain in the butt to sit on and work for long periods of time. I work at my computer all day long and I’ve been through many chairs, searching for the perfect one that looks attractive and is still functional. It’s a bit of a challenge for a more “romantic” office, but you’ll do it well. Your rug is beautiful and I love the idea for the your desk.
Victoria
Completely agree. While cute to be together on settee, child sitting next to you on separate seat much more practical for your health and future furniture usage.
Design of chandelier and placement of desk does make it look a little like sword of Damocles, but in proportion desk and chair may balance it out.
Beth
I am new to Montgomery. I would love to know where you “shopped”. You may have to make a trip to Birmingham or Atlanta to find your desk.
Benita Smith
You need to add an “S” to the “K” and “L” on the wall in there. 🙂
Layla
There’s actually a tag with Sonny’s name on it on the little white plate. It was so fun to be able to add it! 😀
Tanya
Love, love, LOVE the rug! My colors, for sure.
My husband made my current desk/table out of a slab of wood (about 30″ x 58″) he had “just laying around” — Ha, he’s a woodworker in his “spare time”!
Anyway, he added legs to it years ago to make a table, but the legs eventually had to be replaced with a bit sturdier construction. At that time, he also added 3 drawers across the front. It’s very functional now. 😀 I’d take a picture, but it’s pretty messy today.
Sarita
Please…a settee! Time flies and to have sweet boy sit next to you will last a short time. With him there its great “learning” time. Moving the settee is such a small thing compared to time spent together. Just my opinion. 🌸🌸
Monica
I love your table idea! Couldn’t help but notice the lovely plate wall and thinking there should be an “S” there somewhere 🙂
Layla
It’s in there. I’ll have to post a pic later this week. 😉
AlisonG
Agree, add wheels to the settee. Any chairs you put there will be harder to move on a rug anyway.
Nora
What is the framed whole in the wall above the basket. I was wondering if it was an access point for kitty’s litter pan.
Nora
HOLE not whole

Adding caster wheels to the settee would solve the mobility issue. Not sure how comfortable a settee would be versus a “real” office chair (you could slipcover the chair to make it pretty), but it would look great, and the “snuggle factor” is better with a settee:-)
Please snap a close-up of Steevenson’s name/letter on the wall; or, perhaps a bigger version is in order?
The rug is beautiful, good choice. It will be fun to see what you decide on for the furniture and lighting!
Judy
Hi Layla, love the coziness of your space. The settee is cute…would you consider putting it across the table so you can see each other? Looking forward to see what you do always!
Jenny B.
You could put rolling casters on the settee to make it easier to move in and out. Just a thought. 😉
Layla
Ooh! Now there’s an idea! Thanks for giving me something to ponder tonight! 😀
eclaire
too many legs
Layla
On the table? On the settee? In the room? Any chair or desk would have four legs a piece, so what would you do instead? I’m curious.
Barbara H.
I didn’t make the original comment about too many legs, but you could use a chair with a skirt around the bottom OR a desk with a more solid foundation (drawers on each side with a knee hole) to reduce the number of skinny legs all clustered together.
Layla
Great ideas! The 8 legs don’t really bother me though. There are 36 around our dining room table. 😉
Charlotte Lindsay
I love Rugs USA they have so many amazing, quality options at an affordable price. The one you found is a steal, I like that the colors are more muted pastels it makes the piece more calming. Something that is important for me in a work space.
CathyA101
Layla,
I somehow missed what happened to your little dog? Is he still with you guys?
Just wondering.
I love what you’re doing with this space in your brainstorming.
It’s great.
Kate Carney
If you put wheels on the front legs of the settee, you would have an easier way to move it. I saw this at a retirement home. It made the chairs super easy to move. I might be remembering wrong and they were on the back legs.
nancy
I love Rugs USA because they are reasonable and maybe not as durable as some but then I
don’t usually want them “forever” anyway. I got a light fixture like the one you’re showing off of eBay.
Debbie V.
My thoughts too were why not put the old fashioned little wheels on the settee?
jenny k.
Have you thought of building a desk? A straight leg oblong table style would be pretty easy it seems 😉
Marie P.
Oh, I LOVE your idea of using a settee!! As soon as I read your post and saw your photo, I decided to explore getting one for my desk. My three-year-old granddaughter loves to spend some time with me at my desk, and a settee would be so snuggly and wonderful! Right now I have two chairs side-by-side, but that beautiful settee would work so much better. Plus, I agree with others’ comments about using casters and that the togetherness you’d share with your son would far outweigh the extra effort. Eventually, you could even place it in front of your desk–facing outward or inward–as a spot to curl up. I vote for a settee!
Ria from Oz
I think the person who made the commenet about the ‘too many legs’ was really not paying attention that it was a quick photoshopped pic you made.
Any how, the look is going to be lovely! Kind of what I was alluding to in my last comment on your previous post. Yes, a settee may be too heavy to move in and out, and I personally would not put castors on it, you will get digging in marks eventually either on the floor or the rug. Considering you wouldn’t be on the computer all day everyday like some of us are, you would get away with a settee rather than an ergonomic chair.
Now my 5 cents for what its worth, I would get a kitty cat bed and put that near you or far away enough so you don’t trip over it, and you can still have sweet pea sitting with you. OR you could get a blanket and have kitty sit on that next to you and kiddo on the other side! That’s just how I would think of doing it. I am sure you have your own ideas once you start using it all in your daily life.
Cheers!
Danielle
I have that chandelier in my dining room. Genuine vintage 1950’s. I’d love to even up swap it for the gorgeous one that you have that is too large. 🙂 I’ve enjoyed your blog for years. Too bad I’m all the way in North Carolina. Blessings!
Lauren
I love the idea!! I can’t wait to see what you find and I love that rug my goodness 😀
Debbie
I’m looking for a rug in my dining room. Love the colors of this rug. Has it aged well? Do you notice lots of piling? Thanks.
Layla
I’ve only had it for a few weeks, but yes, it’s holding up nicely to traffic in and out our back door. 🙂 Not much piling either!
