“I read a lot about why our brains love the ocean, and it turns out, our gray matter is actually hardwired to react positively to the Earth’s blue matter.”
-Layla Palmer
I saw that question posted on Instagram and I decided it’s anywhere I can see the sea.
And then I wondered if there was more to it than the way it looks and sounds. ? So I did what any curious person that has access to the internet does. I Googled it. 🙂
I read a lot about the science behind why our brains love the ocean, and it turns out our gray matter is actually hardwired to react positively to the Earth’s blue matter.
Studies show that just being near water can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what’s broken. One scientist/biologist/ecologist calls it Blue Mind. I love that.
Fascinating how our thoughts and emotions can be shaped by our interaction with the most prevalent substance on our planet, isn’t it?
And while I’m delving deep, have I told you that I’m really happy you’re here lately? Here on the blog and here on this big blue marble with me? I am. 🙂 Pretty neat that we get to share this chunk of time, on this chunk of rock. Although, if water is the most prevalent substance on our planet, maybe I should say chunk of water? 😉
Anywho, I look forward to reading where you do your best thinking if you feel like sharing today too!

I agree water is very calming, and I am lucky enough to live on an Island. Also watching the sun set over our local mountain takes my breath away.

I am blessed to work from home out in the hills of Tennessee and the view from my desk is always inspirational. Green hills and trees are my happy place.

I love the mountains of Western NC, where I live. But I do my best thinking in the shower. Under a flowing stream of WATER. If I have an issue to think through, that is where I head.

Hi Layla, interesting info! My favorite place to be is at the beach and you guessed it because of the water. It does refresh me and inspire me like nothing else! I live in The northeast about an hour from the beach. My dream is to live right on the coast with the ocean right in front of me!

Yes,nice to know facts Layla. Thank you! My favorite places to think are the beach, tubing down the river, playing in the creek, floating in my grandaughter’s 12′ intel pool or cutting grass on the mower and tractor. Soooo relaxing…..guess I do a lot of thinking.

Totally agree with that info, but I’m not near water very often. My best thinking place is on my patio in the evenings watching the sunset. It is such a peaceful place to admire God’s beauty.

I seem to do my best thinking in the shower where there are no distractions, and interestingly, WATER! But… I am SO with you about the ocean. I absolutely LOVE it. I grew up 2 hours from it, and now I live about 2 full days drive away, and man, do I miss it! I’m not sure if it’s just thinking that I do best there… I would say it’s more like I just do my best BEING there! I just plain feel best when I’m there. Sheesh, maybe I need to think more about this and think about heading back to live near it again. Thank you for the insight!
hello haha narf

As odd as it sounds, right now, I don’t have a place where I do my best thinking. It’s more of when I do my best thinking. It’s typically late at night (often on my couch, so maybe that’s where I do my best thinking) or early morning after my cup of coffee while I’m getting ready for work.
