How is it already the middle of July? I read somewhere that tomorrow is National Hot Dog Day.
Are you a hot dog person? I still can’t decide if I am or not, but I was reading an article in one of our local papers that made me wonder if I just hadn’t tried the right toppings yet. Chili, relish, ketchup, mustard…I guess I’ve never thought about what else you could slather in there. Here are some of the options the author mentioned in his article:
- Kimichi (spicy pickled cabbage)
- balsamic carmelized onions
- Giardiniera (pickled vegetables in vinegar or oil)
- Furikake (seaweed, sesame seeds and bonito…a smaller relative of tuna)
- Old Bay seasoning
- peanut butter
- grilled pineapple
- mac n’ cheese
- peaches (sliced) with chopped green onions and a fruit chutney
Those suggestions didn’t really get my mouth watering, but I am curious about the addition of fruit.
Here’s a link to the recipe pictured above: Pickled Peach and Bacon Dogs with Argula Mayo. I don’t know if I’d like that either, but man does it make a pretty picture, huh?
This Tex-Mex dog that looks like it would be full of flavor too:

Delish.com published an article titled “50 States of Hot Dog Toppings” that was pretty interesting too:
I wasn’t fond of the topping they chose for Alabama (boiled peanuts), but again, I’m very intrigued by the fruit on Florida’s mango salsa-topped hot dog and Georgia’s hot dog, which is piled high with chopped up peaches.
How ’bout you? Have you ever topped a hot dog with fruit? I may have to give that sweet-meets-salty combo a try the next time we fire up the grill!

Not sure about fruit. Hmmmm…
But I recently wanted to try something different so I topped it with broccoli slaw, avocado, tomato, queso fresco and a cotija cilantro dressing. I actually liked it better than the traditional hot dog with chili and cheese. 😋.
Happy Hot Dog Day! 🤪

I like sweet/salty so yes I would try it with fruit! And we have been in Georgia a year now – so peaches will be a good fruit to start with. 🍑

The fruit toppings sound delicious to me. The list of state hot dog toppings was interesting. I have never in my 43 years of being a Wisconsinite seen anyone put cheese on top of a hot dog. We put it INSIDE of the hot dog:)

Interesting list. There are several I would try. Personally, I have never eaten boiled peanuts that were crunchy (Alabama is my home). I wonder if the writer(s) of the article have ever actually eaten boiled peanuts. Don’t forget “fried” peanuts go in your coke.

I love hot slaw on my hot dog. As it seems, hot slaw is only known in my corner of southeast Tennessee. If I venture even 30 minutes away from home, no one knows what hot slaw is. And no, it’s not warm cole slaw. I don’t think I would eat fruit on my hot dog.It just doesn’t appeal. Give me chili (with beans) mustard, ketchup, hot slaw and I’m good and my hot dog is good.

My brother in law works for a hot dog distributor and when he was hired his boss told him their hot dogs are “to sell, not to eat.” He told him not to feed them to his family because they’re so full of chemicals. I’m sure they’re not all that bad, but since then I have a hard time eating them. I do agree with my state on the list though – fry sauce makes everything better!

Speaking of hot dogs, have you considered never buying another one and giving Johnsonville brats a try instead? So. Much. Better. Especially if you boil them in beer before you grill them. Not that you have to do either. But why wouldn’t you?
And thanks for sharing what my mom always fixed to accompany fried shrimp a name… Fry Sauce? Who knew? Of course she didn’t use mayo. Miracle Whip. Miracle Whip and Ketchup. Good times.
