Merry Mantel Decorating – Day Two (Coastal Christmas)

Nov 30, 2015 By Layla

Welcome back to my “Merry Mantel” decorating series! Today’s look is Coastal Christmas, and I kept the ideas super simple and affordable so things would be easy-breezy to recreate. Click the play button on the video below to watch…

I had so much fun with that one! Here’s a link to the blog post I mentioned in the video: Wood Slat Wall Art and here’s a still shot of the finished product for those who can’t view the video:

Coastal Christmas Mantel | The Lettered Cottage | Decorating Series

That reminds me, the videos are hosted on YouTube, so if you’re having trouble watching them on my blog, you can always view them on YouTube here: Merry Mantel – Day 2

I’ll be back tomorrow with look #2!

Thank you for the still shot!!! It is SO appreciated. I hope I can find some way to watch the videos eventually so I can see how you did it and where you found it all and such.

    Thank you very much.

Really enjoy this series – getting me motivated for weekend decorating!! Silly question – how do you keep your hot glue from making the long nuisance threads? Your glue spots appear to be very clean clumps…thanks if you can help! Love ya’! PS you are making me want to grow my hair out again : )

      Thank you, Mom! 😀

…and to answer your question: I usually *really* scrape the tip of the hot glue gun against whatever I’m applying the glue to so that it completely disconnects, and prevents the glue from “stringing”.
Can’t wait to see how you decorate! I’ll email you about coming down! XO

I really love this series and have already found it so helpful! I appreciate your tips and tricks like how you attach things. I also love the thought/design process you use (light on dark on light, different textures, different sizes, groupings, etc.). These things might be second nature to designers, but they are usually the things that make such a big difference. I’m trying to get better and these guidelines really help. Could you also talk about how to deal with different types of mantels? I have two fireplaces in my home and both of them are concrete. They have shallow mantels (6-3/4″) so I am almost always at a loss as to what to layer up there that can provide height in such a narrow place. I also don’t know how to attach things because of the concrete. Thank you for this great series! I look forward to learning more. 🙂

I love this series! I don’t have a mantle and the space between the top of the opening of our firebox and the ceiling is only 24 inches. I’m a little stumped with what to do with my fireplace (it also has a couple of weird cubbies on the side) but I love watching what you’re doing and brainstorming options.

Love all your videos! Your tip in the first video about the 3/4 garland length was especially great, but then I’ve yet to hear an idea of yours that I didn’t like! 🙂

Loved how you did it! I can’t help but wondering how high is your ceiling? Ours is 9 foot high. But yours seems to be much higher. Looks really nice.
Love the way you decorate. Cant wait for your lil boy to come home!

By the way, thanks so much for having closed captions on your video. I really appreciate it very much.

      Hi Cindy!
Our ceilings are 10′ high on the first floor and 9′ high on the second floor. Thank you for your sweet comment! 🙂

Love what you’re doing. My fireplace has a raised hearth and no mantel but your ideas are great and so simple. Your explanations – light-dark-light, etc. are just what we need to demystify things!

Beautiful mantel! I just started following your blog and I have to say it helps that you add the you tube videos. It is nice to change the mantel themes up a bit!
