Master Bedroom Makeover Update: Bedding

Apr 28, 2016 By Layla

After a couple of weeks of moving furniture out, painting, installing board & batten, and moving furniture back in, we’re finally back in our bedroom. Ahhhhh!

Board And Batten | Easy DIY | Lattice Strips

Kevin and I slept on the couches in our living room while we worked upstairs, so MAN does it feel good to snuggle with my sweetie have our bed back again! 😀 And speaking of our bed, I pulled out the (Pottery Barn) Clearlake quilt and shams my mom bought us several years back and I love how it pops! I tried out our (Pottery Barn) Matine Toile quilt & shams and the blanket I got from Schoolhouse Electric too…

I love that I can use both of them now!

I had some fun with Photoshop to give you an idea of where I’m headed in here over the next few months…

(rug: RugsUSA; painting: “Spring Drive”, by HammmadeFurniture on Etsy)

You’ll notice everything that makes up the “background” (walls, lighting, rug, window treatments) is neutral in tone. White, wood, and black. That way I can have lots of fun with color in the bedding and decor!

I had some questions about the lattice we used in my board & batten post, so I thought I’d include a few more close-up photos here today. The main reason we chose the lattice is because how thin it is. No, it doesn’t butt up perfectly to our existing baseboards and crown molding, but we decided the *slight* difference in depth didn’t matter. Here’s a close-up view of how it looks down at the baseboard…

…and here’s a close-up view of how it looks up by the crown molding:

We’re really thrilled with how it turned out!

Obviously the windows are still naked, but I’ve got big plans for them over the next couple of weeks. I mentioned in a previous post that I’m partnering with my absolute favorite window treatment company, SelectBlinds.com. We purchased all the shades on the windows downstairs from them over the past few years, so I’m beyond excited to be able to work with them on these windows upstairs!

The oil rubbed bronze, the colorful bedding and oars all
work together extremely well! I also love the board and
batten. Can’t wait for more. Love, love, love this room!!

Hi!! Love this look. I’m struggling with the question: am I a old white girl or a pure white girl. I like how you did your room in all pure white. I repaint furniture and do both and have both and like both but it’s hard for both to exist in a home or a space. Have very different feels. What are your thoughts?

      Hi Rosemary!
By “old white” do you mean off-white? I love mixing off-white with my Simply White (Benjamin Moore) walls. Maybe not in the furniture, but definitely in the fabrics and decor! 🙂

I’m guessing you’re an Annie Sloan girl. 🙂 I like both, and think both can exist in the same house, but if you must choose, then consider the other colors in your home and how they relate to the whites. Think about fixed elements, like the floors, and see if one or the other feels better.

Looks great! Love the PB quilt. Can’t wait to see pics of Sweet P jumping on that bed!

You and Kevin have amazing photography skills..and a gorgeous landscape right in your own neighborhood. Canvas/Canvases of your own work would be gorgeous in your room/over your bed. Just a thought 😉

I love the neutral “background”. I use it myself. It sure makes giving rooms a whole new look easy with fabrics and artwork. My favorite is the Clearlake quilt…..if you’re taking votes. 🙂

Oh, no…no voting, Donna. I plan on swapping them (and the others I have!) out regularly! 😀 #IHeartBedding

I would love to add board and batten to a few walls in our home and I’ve seen the lattice technique on other blogs. The thing I can’t quite figure out is how to make it work with “knock down” textured walls. Does your drywall have a smooth finish? Ours does not and I’m just not convinced the lattice strips will create the right look. Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions….I love how this room is coming together!

    • Layla

Yes, our drywall is very smooth. I’m not sure if it would have the same traditional board & batten effect with textured walls. You may look into planking them (with “planks” cut out of thin plywood) or cladding them with sheets of beadboard instead.

Karyn, We just “planked” our guest bedroom wall this week. I used 1/4″ luan 4×8 sheets (3 of them) from Lowes. They cut it for me in 6″ wide strips. (Free!). I needed to sand them then use a primer then 2 coats of paint. I’m finishing up the painting today and they turned out great. The 3 sheets of luan cost $14 each. Hope this helps you make your decision. Love Layla’s bedroom and entire house!

I had a room with textured walls that I wanted to redo with board and batten. I had a painter float the walls with a smooth finish and then added the bats. Probably le$$ than adding both boards and bats.

Love the texture the lattice adds to walls, your photoshop ceiling beams dramatically changes the space, strangely makes the room look even bigger and warms up the space too! Great choices! WOW!

Do you sharing where you found your headboard?

We got it on JCPenneys website several years back! 🙂

If you are looking for a great quality iron headboard we purchased a twin and a daybed frame from LLBean. Not sure if they still carry them but they were very nice and reasonable.

Beautiful! Just wondering what sheen you painted the walls and lattice strips? Thanks

Didn’t you paint that headboard oil rubbed bronze a couple of years ago, and if so, how is it holding up? I have a white metal bed that I want to paint bronze. Love your bedroom, can’t wait to see how it evolves!

I love your sconces and want them! Can you tell me where to find them or something similar!

Same question for me! Working on our daughter’s room and those sconces would be perfect– thank you, Layla, for so much inspiration!

I’m wondering about the wood blinds it looks like you are going to hang. I see that your windows are like mine – metal slides all the way up the inside of the window. How are you going to mount the blinds? Outside mount on the trim pieces? (Unfortunately, our moulding is not flat, so that’s not an option.) Mounted inside from the top? (Does that make sense?) If inside, will the blinds reach the edges of the window or will you adjust them smaller to fit within the metal slides? I desperately need to replace our window treatments, but am at a loss.

I love Hammmade!!!! I have one of their pieces of art…a Mississippi one with a William Faulkner quote! They went above and beyond, even calling me personally! Loving the bedroom. You’ve inspired me again!!!

L-O-V-E- it! Thank you so much for that close-up of how the lattice/baseboard angle looks. I agree…it doesn’t smash together in the way some might think it should, but I sure think it looks awesome! Gives me hope for what I want to do. You go! The room is gorgeous!

So pretty, we’ve been married for 8 years and have never had “real” bedding. Just mismatched hand-me-down stuff. That is on my list for the summer! And maybe a headboard too! Love the light blue bedding!

Feng Shui says to not have beams over your head, if you do they should be painted to match the ceiling. I’ve been reading up on Feng Shui lately. 🙂

Oh boy…we’re about to put up rustic beams in our bedroom! 😀 Guess I’ll call it “Feng LAY” instead of Feng Shui- lol!

Hello Layla! I am in love with your updates!! I’ve been to the Select Blinds site a few times but I can’t find the color of your blinds… do you know if they have perhaps changed the name of them?

    thanks so much!

      Hi Toni!

Yes- they did change the name! They’re called “Sterculia” now. Here’s a link to the page: http://www.selectblinds.com/bambooblinds/shoreline-cordless-woven-woods.html

I should mention though, that those aren’t the ones we’re using in our bedroom. I’m blogging about the ones we chose for upstairs on Friday! 😉

OK Layla! I am going right now to buy the same paint to redo our son’s two-tone blue room that we painted back when he was in high school…I really LOVE the inspiration your room is providing! The problem is it has the wooden window trim that I really DON”T want to paint (trying not to paint the wood trim since the rest of our grand old Minnesota home still has it’s original 1897 wood trim throughout) and the original floors aren’t as dark as yours. I want to also order the metal JCPenney bed (found a similar one), the rug and the blinds!! lol I just am going with what you did since it looks absolutely lovely! 🙂

My question: Do you think the jute you chose will work on a lighter medium shade wood floor?? I know it is perfect on the dark tone in your room. I may just order it and hope it works! 😉

Thank you so much for sharing your project and your sources! I really love your style!
