I love it because it reminds me of caning…
I love it because it reminds me of a quilt…
It’s called Sunflower…and I love that about it, too. 🙂 #MomsFavoriteFlower

We used a piece of trim (painted the same color as the wall) from Home Depot to cap off the edges on each side…
…and now that the big ol’ microwave is gone, there’s room for a vent above the stove if we ever decide we want to add one.
The countertops on either side of the stove are quartz by Caesarstone. They’re a very, very light gray, but they read as white when it’s super sunny. I told Kevin it looks like white carrara marble and gray concrete got married and had a super durable baby named Frosty Carrina. 😀
We’re focusing on the stove side of the kitchen right now (we’ll work on the island side next month), and we’re partnering with a local paint company (New Look Decorating) on the cabinets. I look forward to sharing a post with some photos of how they turned out once they’re all finished in a couple of coats of Ultra by Muralo. It’s supposed to be some pretty awesome stuff and I can’t wait to see how everything looks painted (Benjamin Moore’s) Simply White!
Happy weekend!

Kristen, thank you for sharing that sweet story about your Grandmother with all of us. I loved reading it and I’ll be in touch with you about your prize today!
Also, a few folks mentioned they missed the t-shirt sale last month, so I had a few more of each size printed and put them in my shop over at Etsy. Click the banner below to head that way if you’re interested, and thanks again to everyone who bought one the first time around! XO

Love that tile! Its so pretty! And a vent over the stove is going to be gorgeous. Just noticed that you have the same cabinet pulls as we do (that we have to replace often). If you decide to get rid of them when you repaint the cabinets, give me a holler! 🙂
Layla
Hi Andrea! We do plan to use some different hardware, so I will definitely be in touch when we start painting! XO
Andrea
Thanks!
Andrea S.
Do you still have all your old cabinet pulls? 🙂 How much?
Danielle
LOVE how it is coming out. I’m learning how to cane and it really does look like caning or a quilt. So pretty! x
Layla
Ooh! Fun! I love that you’re learning how to cane! 😀
Natasha
This is just beautiful! Peaceful and serene! Well done.
Layla
Thank you, Natasha! 😀
lori
Looks beautiful!! What did you end up doing with your microwave?? I’m thinking of doing something similar.
Layla
Thank you, Lori! We are going to use a small microwave in our pantry instead. It’ll sit on one of the deep shelves in there. 🙂
Bev
The tile is so dainty …love it. So glad you put your t-shirts in a Etsy shop! I am going to get one !
Dar
I absolutely love that back splash. It makes me happy just looking at it. What type of wood are your cabinets? Mine are maple by Wellborn and I’m wondering how they will do painted. It makes me very nervous since they are a softer type of wood, unlike oak.
Layla
Thanks, Dar! Our cabinets are painted (and glazed) and I think only the front frame is real wood, and the sides are some kind of veneer.

So lovely! Is the Ultra the paint you will use on your cabinets or the Benjamin Moore Simply White? Or, is the Ultra a base coat. We are planning on doing our kitchen and from what I’ve read the Ultra sounds wonderful. Thanks so much.
Layla
Thank you, Dorothy! Ultra is the type of paint. Simply White is the color! 😀

Thank you, Layla. You present so much beauty inwardly and outwardly.

Another thing/person that your groovy tile brings to mind — HGTV’s Sarah Richardson!
This looks like a backsplash that he would install!
Oh, + btw, that trim idea rocks my world!
I never would’ve thunk it!
Kay
. . . or SHE would install, I should say! Fire the proofreader! 🙂

The tile is beautiful and I’m really loving your countertops! I’m going to have to remember this product when I put my new kitchen together!
Kristen
OMG YAYY! I can NOT believe I won! Thank you. Thank you!! 🙂
Teresa
It may not be required by code in your area but you should really think about installing a hood, especially since you have a gas range. Gas combustion always produces some level of CO and NOx, so getting rid of it is always a good idea.
The tile looks amazing!
Layla
Great point, Teresa! I wish I could tell you we actually USED the stove more than twice a month (LOL!), but your suggestion has sealed the deal on whether or not we’ll install one at some point. Thank you! 😀
Cottage David
Wow, I love that tile. I’m redoing the kitchen in our 1850s farmhouse this summer and I’ve been searching for back-splash ideas.

Hi there, Layla! I love your blog and am enjoying all your home improvement projects. I just wanted throw out there that you may want to check your local codes about not having a vent hood. It may be required, especially with a gas range. Even if it’s not required, here is an article about venting with a gas stove. I thought it might be helpful (especially with your little one coming). In the end, it is probably a personal preference. With over 15 yrs of construction, preservation and restoration experience, I am all about making the best informed decisions as possible! 🙂

Two thumbs up on the backsplash choice! So deliciously fabulous!
Hey, so I have a crazy question…does your church need a drummer? I know of someone (ok, I don’t know him personally, but I met his parents last night!) His name is R, he’s in love with Jesus, he’s living in Nashville currently just playing “gigs.” As R’s parents were sharing with me last night that R really has a heart for playing drums in a church, YOU immediately popped in my mind (which is crazy weird because you and I don’t know each other, I just “blog-stalk” 🙂 you! (have loved your blog for years now!) Even if your church doesn’t have a need right at this time, please keep R in mind for the future! His parents are a part of my church, so I can always get in touch with him (they are AMAZING people, and it sounds like R is, too!)
Have a lovely weekend!

Hi! Thanks for the plug about the new paint. I had this question in mind…a cabinet paint that won’t yellow. Do you think it’s hard enough not to put a top clear coat? I have white painted cabinets right now and I have a problem with chipping from pots and pans etc.
Thanks for your input!
shelby
Layla! Looks amazing;) I really love the pattern!
I need your advice, I want to paint my wood tone cabinets white, but the hinges are exposed, should I paint over the hinges? I know from wear it will come off over time, or do you think maybe spray painting white and getting a paint color close to the spray paint color for the hinges would be better?
Lindsey
Thank you for this blog and sharing your ideas with us. I love it. I might move in and live on your stove just to be near that backsplash. In the least creepy way possible. : )
Judy
Love the tile! It’s stunning!

Hi Layla and Kevin!
I have been enjoying your blog since December when your sweet sister-in-law Robin told me about it. All of a sudden, your posts quit coming to my inbox. I tried to sign up again, but I got a message saying my e-mail address is already registered. Can you help me?
Thank you!
*btw….I grew up with Kevin and his brother on Amity Lane. It’s a small world! 🙂

The tile is SO pretty! I’ve never heard of Muralo paints before. I just clicked over and read a little about their Ultra line. It looks to be very similar to BM Advance. Any particular reason why you’re using Muralo and not Benjamin Moore? Just curious. 🙂
Layla
Hey girlfriend! It’s just what the folks at New Look Decorating recommended, so we thought we’d give it a whirl! 🙂 (We also saw it on a piece of furniture over at their store and were impressed at how durable it looked!) XO

Hey Layla – help! We’re trying to put the finishing pieces on our kitchen remodel (yay!!) and we need to finish off our tile JUST like you did with the wood trim – and can’t figure out how to do it!! Did you cut the piece of molding to fit the tile by hand?? Help! 🙂

It looks absolutely stunning
joey
It looks fantastic! Oh, I cannot wait to get my microwave out from over the range!

Donna Johnson mentions on 5/04/14 about not receiving posts. I also now have to google your site to read your posts. In attempting to re-enter my info it comes up I am already a member. I have lost all the posts fed by Feedburner, tho they say I am already signed up. Any idea how to correct this? I am 71 and LOVE seeing all your projects and lovely ideas. Your ideas are amazing! Your color choices are simply stunning. Thank you
Layla
Hmmm…that Feed stuff is so over my head, Corinne! :-/ I’ll have to check with my web developer- thanks for the heads up!
I heard Feedburner was going to stop working at some point (maybe we’ve finally reached that point?), but you can always subscribe via email in my sidebar, or just visit TheLetteredCottage.net or TheLetteredCottage.com. Thank you so much for your kind comment, too. I appreciate it so much! 😀 XO

I love the colors! (I have the same Ming Green/Thassos White color tile in my kitchen..different style though) with small diamonds of honey onyx. http://www.scabostile.com/ZoomImage_V3.aspx?productID=DS-58 ,
whichco-ordinates nicely with our natural maple cabinets. I’m beginning to think I’ve made the RIGHT decisions, because I love your style 🙂 Good choice going with a light counter. I chose a dark peacock green granite, and am REALLY sorry! Oh yeah, and we have the same hardware, too.
Vanessa@Decor Happy
Love the backsplash – it just exudes happiness! And you can’t go wrong with Frosty Carrina. It’s a favourite! Can’t wait to see it all done.
Sunny
The tile is lovely Layla, even the name Sunflower makes one want to smile.
Am keeping your little family in prayer..and wishing for that happy day to come in His good time.
Blessings!

Looks beautiful!

It’s looking beautiful! I love the backsplash…I’ve often thought that tiling in general is an awful lot like quilting 😉
Juli P
I’m finally catching up on progress and absolutely LOVE this tile! It is going to be just lovely when the cabinets are painted and complete!
I’d be checking scratch and dent sales for a stainless slide in range, so that the back isn’t covering up so much of that gorgeous tile. Just love it!
Sarah Lopez
Love the backsplash! Did you use the large or small Sunflower tile for your kitchen backsplash? I want to use the Sunflower tile but unsure which size to use! Please help!
Thanks!
