Hello, fellow cottage style-fans! Boy have I got a fun makeover to share with you today! 😀
Just before Christmas, my e-friend Kristine (who lives in Australia and blogs at The Painted Hive) was asked to participate in a room refresh competition for Angie’s List. She had five-ish days and $500 to transform her parent’s laundry room, and I just love the way it turned out! Here’s what one side of the space looked like before…
…and here’s what that same side looks like now!
So pretty, right? 😀 I love that she kept the existing tile, and how she concealed the washer/dryer. (I’m assuming it’s one of those machines that does both?)
Those shelves (and the way she decorated them!) are super cute too!
In her blog post, Kristine wrote, “It can be tempting to throw the baby out with the bathwater, though as you can see, I kept the cabinets, tiles and flooring and dragged them all out of the past with some fresh and thoughtful “accompaniments”. Breathing new life into the existing elements in a room is one of my favourite ways to redecorate. I’m so, so proud of the way this space came together. Mum and I did all of the work ourselves and chuckled from time-to-time about our new careers in plumbing and carpentry!”
Kristine shared many more photos of the space over at her blog if you’d like to swing by her place for the full tour. She also mentioned that she’ll be posting a follow-up post that talks about all the where’d you get it/how’d you make it info, so be sure to stay tuned for all that good stuff too!
And if you have a few extra seconds, and you’d like to support Kristine in the Angie’s List competition (the winner gets an additional prize!), just click on the washing machine graphic below to cast a vote. It’s literally just two clicks and your done…no logging in or anything extra like that:
Happy weekend, friends!

Very nice! I love how she kept everything and just freshened up the space and I like the counter top that brought it all together. Thanks for sharing with us! Happy Friday to you and your family!

It may not be a washer/dryer combo because here In Australia we tend to hang our clothes outside to dry as the weather is generally warm and sunny for most of the year and it is more environmentally friendly. I own a dryer but haven’t used it in years! I follow her blog as well and think she is very creative.
Layla
I was wondering if that might be the case too, Nancie! So cool that you don’t need a dryer! 😀

She did answer on another post (that was the question of the day). She said it is just a washer and her mom uses a clothesline to dry. I think I’m more jealous of that ?

How great it would be to hang laundry outside! Most places here where I live won’t let you do that. Unthinkable that at some point, someone decided that was a no-no.
I love what she did to refresh the space without having to totally gut the room. Embrace what you can, and don’t always take the easy way out!

I absolutely adore her! I have been following her for a long time now, and she has such a keen eye. She often uses what she has, and makes it better each and every time 🙂

I’m a big Painted Hive fan! Voted yesterday, but will keep voting each day. Perfect refresh. Can’t wait to see what she used for the barn door hardware. I want to do something similar with my doggy door but the hardware is so expensive. She hints to a diy that just might work for me, as well. Always inspired by Kristine’s handiwork.

Aw, girl, you have totally blown me away! I was so not expecting to see this. Thank you so, so, so much Layla for being so genuine, lovely and supportive! I only hope I can pay this forward somehow one day. Please let me know if there is anything I can do.

Yay Painted Hive! I have been reading that blog for ages! Another Aussie strikes again, yippee!
As to hanging washing outside, when I was in Oregon, it was a no-no, some city hall ordnance or some rubbish. I hung a rope between two pine trees, and got the sun to do the job. The neighbour came over and told me off, and I said, “Oh, so you like wasting precious fossil fuels to dry your washing when Mother Nature did it all for me here AND for free?” The Oregonian neighbour stood for a minute (he was 94 so that was an effort to be sure!) and scratched his head and muttered, “Damn Aussies, always right…” and walked back to his house. Hee hee!
Love the laundry Kristine!
