Remember my new friend Carlie, and her bedroom that she wanted to personalize?

She had already hung the (drop cloth) drapes and painted the walls, floor and bathroom door by the time I came over for the first look-see, but she wanted to inject more of her personality as far as the art, furniture and decor went, and she just wasn’t sure where to start or how to implement it. I think we’ve all been there a time or two. (Or three!)
One thing she did feel sure about was what she wanted on the wall to the right of her bed. She envisioned a big piece of art with scripture on it. Something that would be the perfect start to her mornings. She chose Psalm 143:8. “Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul.” ”
I told her I couldn’t promise it would be perfect, but that I could *probably* put something together. We measured the wall and decided on the size 36″x36″.
I started by picking up an 8-dollar piece of luan plywood from the home improvement store, and then I pulled out one of my old sample pots of blue-gray paint.
I rolled on some of the blue-gray, and then used a palette knife to scrape on a second (messy) coat of white paint. After that, I laid a yard of burlap onto the surface of the wood, and then rolled some more white paint onto to surface of the wood. It left a really neat, random pattern, but when I pulled the burlap away, there were a lot of little burlap fibers stuck in the paint. Nothing a little sandpaper couldn’t fix! I gave the whole thing a quick, light sanding and it turned out nice and smooth. I did the lettering with a pencil (using the print it out backwards and rub it on with a pencil method), and like I told Carlie, it’s not perfect- but, hallelujah, what it says is! 🙂
My friend, Billy, helped me make a simple frame out of dark walnut-stained 1″x2″s and Kevin and I hung it up for Carlie today.
We’ve still got a ways to go in here, but I wanted to post an update since I had some new photos. Check out her pretty new bedding!
It’s the Samantha duvet and Pick-Stitch quilt and shams from Pottery Barn. I’m excited to bring in some more art, accessories and greenery soon!

Can you explain how you use “the carbon paper” method, please? Are you using old fashioned carbon paper? Love the project but need more info…..Thanks
Sure! I just left a comment about it under Sally’s comment. Hope that helps! 🙂
Thanks for the explanation….sounds easy but I just printed out a bold letter “”B” using the “Best Quality” setting and then put it down on top of another piece of copy paper. Attempted to press hard to get the ink to transfer and be visible, but it seems my ink dries up too quickly. It was slightly visible but then I immediately tried to get the ink to move to another spot and nothing transferred. I would have to print out one letter at a time to get it to transfer. Maybe I could try using a whole word and work really quickly…..maybe??
I have an HP Photosmart printer. What kind of printer are you using?? Wonder why your ink transfers and mine is stubborn. Maybe it was because your board had texture.
Hmmm…we have an HP Envy 5530 printer on our desktop, Lindy. I’m not sure why it didn’t transfer. It could be that my paint was still a little wet?
Layla, it’s perfectly imperfect! and I absolutely LOVE it!! Great job!! Her room is coming together nicely. Looking forward to seeing the rest!
Thank you, Jenny! 🙂
Gorgeous! I love how light and airy everything is. Great job on the sign! I can’t wait to see how everything will look! She must love the cozy feeling!
Thank you, Sabrina! 🙂
I love the sign too! I’m not clear on how you did the verse or how you used the carbon method either. Could you do a tutorial when you have some time? I know I would be grateful.
Sure! It was super simple: I just printed out the wording *backwards*, and laid the paper face down on the board. I used a pencil to rub all the still-sort-of-wet ink onto the surface of the board, and then went back and made each letter a little darker with my pencil. Easy peasy!
did you print onto the carbon paper?
No, just regular ol’ copy paper. 🙂
Also what font is the block lettering? 🙂 thank you! This is so great and want to do it too!!
Hmmm…I can’t remember what I used that day, Kait! 🙁 It’s been several weeks, I’m sorry!
I see the bed has been painted too. What type of paint, and what color is it?
Yep! Here’s a link to that post: https://theletteredcottage.net/shabby-chic-master-bedroom-makeover/ 🙂
Layla,
This looks just like the signs I’ve seen on Fixer Upper that cost $$$$ on their website, I LOVE it!!
Just beautiful!! The sign is awesome! I love the drop cloth drapes, would you happen to know where she found those?
Thank you, Diane! And I believe she got the drop cloths at Lowes. 🙂
Seriously, just regular drop cloths? Brilliant!!!
I want the framed art!!!! 😉 Seriously, you did good. The room is coming together, I look forward to more. Blessings.
Ok Missy . . . THAT is amazing! I know I probably say that about everything you do but seriously . . . I LOVE THIS!
Do you know the paint color of her bedroom walls? They are so dreamy! Thanks!
I don’t, but I’ll ask Carlie! 😀
It’s a beautiful room. The scripture art is really soft and pretty and I love her curtains too.
Thank you so much, Becky! 😀
Its beautiful! And what a perfect verse!
Thank you, sweet Shannon! 😀
Oh my gosh, this is lovely. I love how serene and tranquil it is.
Yes please to a list of wall colour, ceiling colour, trim colour, headboard colour, closet (?) door colour. I too love the drapes and the bedding. I never would have thought of putting plates on the wall in the bedroom, but tres cool! I am so excited to see what else you do in here. You are very talented and I really love how you shop the house, get creative, recycle and make things so lovely. I am so grateful for the Divine Intervention that made your blog pop up on my screen a few years ago. What an absolute gift you are to all of us.
I really want to experiment with the print & transfer method. How did you get the wording to be backwards? Which program did you use? I totally want to figure this out.
Last week, I searched out a Sherwin Williams dealer in my city, drove across town after work (an hour in the opposite direction to home), and a lovely store clerk helped me seek out a whole wack of SW paint colours that you have used on a bunch of rooms you’ve decorated. It’s so cool to see them in person! And it was a super-fun (mini) adventure! I’ve hung a bunch of the samples in my bathroom to check out how they look in each kind of light throughout the day. Might use one soon. I would love to do the same with all these colours.
DIY at its finest ?
Yes! It is looking beautiful!! I love that passage!
Just started reading your Blog, Layla and love everything about it. The sign is very special. Any chance that you would make others and sell?
I LOVE this! So beautiful 🙂
Just beautiful and the quote is Soooo inspiring and so gracefully done.
thanks a bunch!
Jackie
I love the sign and that you palette knifed and used burlap, bet it gives it some great texture. Great job on your lettering! The frame sets it off perfectly. The room is quickly becoming a very peaceful retreat!
I am interested in where the table lamp was purchased.
Hi, Amy! It came from Hobby Lobby. 🙂
I would love to know th color on her walls. Will you please post if you find out?
Sure thing, Erin! 🙂
I love this room so much! I’d love to know the wall, trim and ceiling colors too if you can get it from Carlie!
I am in love with this bedroom! Any chance you/ Carlie could do a tutorial on painting the bed? I everything is just dreamy 🙂
Thanks, Shannon! Her mom painted the bed, so I’m not sure we can help with the tutorial! 😀
It is wonderful, love the verse!
I love your blog so much, and hate to miss, but for some reason, it stopped coming in my email. I have made no changes. Should I sign up again or have your heard of any others having this problem?
I agree with all of the above…beautiful…dreamy…tranquil.
Would love all the details and video tutorial..
I was just thinking Layla, I became aware of your blog throuh ” A place for Us” and am so grateful , as you are so kind, and have broadened all our horizons, with creativity and faith based inspiration.
Thanks so much!
