Bungalow Barn Update: Barn Red Paint

Aug 11, 2016 By Layla

It’s FriYAY!!!!! 😀

Kevin and I are in full-on cleaning/packing/running errand mode, but I wanted to share a fun update about the Bungalow Barn today. It’s got a new coat, y’all…Benjamin Moore’s Caliente!

Barn House Addition | In Progress | TheLetteredCottage.net

Excuse the temporary overhead power line, the still-not-fixed barn doors on the end of the barn (they were supposed to be X’ed, not filled with board & batten), and the extra brick that was delivered by mistake. And speaking of works in progress, one day we’ll add a small deck around the breakfast room/entry, too.

I’m so excited to see what it all looks like when our house is painted white! I used Photoshop to alter the photo above, just to see what it’s going to look like when we get home from Haiti:

Here’s a closer-up look at the breakfast room/entry:

I hadn’t really thought about what color the back door would be until I snapped that picture earlier this week. What do you think? Black? Blue?

(Added some more grass in there just for kicks, too!)

Another color? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

The light blue….for sure! Is the window trim light blue, as well?

I lean toward robin’s egg blue.
Love the red barn! As barns should be.

I’d lean towards a royal blue, so it is the same intensity of colour as the red. Safe travels to Haiti and home again with SweetP!

That’s what I thought, like the blue in our flag! But I like that softened black too, a charcoal black.

      Aug 12, 2016 at 8:23 am

Agree! The robin’s egg blue doesn’t hold up to the red – needs an deeper blue. But I like the black too! It all looks soooo good! Can’t wait to see a family photo soon!

I’m loving the red! I like the blue door but if all your window trims are blue then maybe something else? Green?

  5. Marcy

    Aug 12, 2016 at 1:06 am

    Blue

  6. Sheena

    Aug 12, 2016 at 2:33 am

I love the black. It really stands out against the red.
Best wishes, safe travels and joyful reunions for your trip to pick up Sweet P.

    The light blue looks perfect!

  8. Maureen

Black would be my choice! But maybe because my house is a similar red, with White trim and a black door I am a bit biased!

I love the blue. So welcoming. The black seems to disappear for me. What a cheerful red barn!
Feeling you’re excitement. Times you’ll never forget! Hard to believe we’re here 🙂

My choice would be black, or navy or charcoal. I think you need a strong deep color to balance the strong red.

    Aug 12, 2016 at 6:18 am

Wow! I love the red paint, it’s a great very earthy red color! Door color, first thought was black/ classic look with red and white. Then a warm golden yellow ( sunflower?) might work too!
Things on every front are really falling into place, all at once aren’t they? THEY ARE ALL GOOD THINGS! So happy for all of you!

    • Anne

      Aug 12, 2016 at 8:38 am

A golden yellow was my thought, too:)

To me black as well; it’s popping out nicely 🙂 Btw, love the red colour barn! x

  13. Kelley

    Aug 12, 2016 at 6:21 am

I think a dark color – like a really dark charcoal gray or black stands up and balances well with red. Light blue doesn’t look strong enough next to the red.

  14. Angela

    Aug 12, 2016 at 6:36 am

The red is gorgeous! Things are coming right along. The blue is my favorite door. the black felt too dark and the glass panes disappeared.

  15. Katie

    Aug 12, 2016 at 6:40 am

Blue! (I’m not even a blue girl). (Black may get hot–not why I picked blue–but just a thought).

Layla, I am so happy for you all. So many amazing, happy things going on. Your heads must be spinning! Can’t wait for everything to unfold!??

Where is that door from? Do you have a link? I’m looking for a door just like that!

The LIGHT BLUE! Oh my gosh . . .can we just pause for a minute about the RED! Oh myyyy . . . GORGEOUS! Just perfect . . . . So excited for you guys for the next few days ahead! XOXOX

  19. Deborah Osterhoudt

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:15 am

Beautiful! I am thinking a soft charcoal grey for the door with red geraniums on the someday deck 🙂 …or a steel blue gray similar (but a shade or two darker) than the roof.

  20. Linda Matson

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:20 am

Why not carry through with the same red as the barn? Red doors say welcome and the white will allow it to stand out at the same time.

  21. Tiffany

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:27 am

Initially, i really liked the black door, but if you will be painting the window trim the same color, I’d go with something lighter. Perhaps a gray or dusty blue?
Also,I’ve been reading your blog for years, but never commented. I just wanted to say how happy I am for you and Kevin to be bringing home your little one! Wishing all of you safe travels, peace in your hearts, and blessings!

    The light blue for sure!

Gray seems perfect to me, but would have to see using your mad photoshop skills that I do NOT possess! Safe travels!

My vote is black! The red barn is perfect!! LOVE it! Happy travels to get your boy. I read and follow often but rarely post!! Best of luck, safe travels and bask in your new love!

Blue door seems to say, “Hey! Glad you’re here. Come on in.”
Congratulations on getting your son. God bless.

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:43 am

Loving the red on the barn but as for the door – I like the darker one. Happy travels!

  28. Amy

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:51 am

The blue or a light charcoal gray. Love the caliente. One of my favorite colors!

  29. Meghan

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:53 am

    Definitely the blue!

  30. angela

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:53 am

not blue, that to me would be like having the flag as house colors even if the door would be a light blue. I like the black and add a flag somewhere.

  31. Lisa w.

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:54 am

    Ohhh the blue !!!!!!! #forsure
    Feeling all your joy???

  32. Carol MJ

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:56 am

I love the contrast between the black, red and white. The blue is too beachy. Too much to paint the breakfast room red and leave the white door? Then you could paint your house white with black trim and a red front door. Nothing says “welcome” more than a red door.

  33. Alison

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:57 am

Blue door for sure! It’s looking great!

  34. Flowerpowermomma

    Aug 12, 2016 at 7:58 am

What sweet door. The blue vrs black, really brings out its best characteristics, in my opinion.
And your red barn is smashing! Thanks be to God for all your recent blessings and prayers for safe journeys in the days to come. ?

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:00 am

I love the lighter blue! And agree with previous posts, that if your window trim is blue, then the door wouldn’t stand out like it could. I love the dark color, too, but it fades into the shadows and then you can’t see the detail on the window panes.

Safe travels to Haiti!!! I am so excited for y’all!

    • Layla

      Aug 12, 2016 at 8:09 am

Oh, the window trim isn’t blue. It’s white. 🙂

Thank you for the travel wishes, Lindsay! I’ve never been so excited to fly!!!

What about an apple green color for the door? The red is stunning, thank you for sharing the progress with us! And so exciting that Sweet P is almost home as well!

    • Cheryl

      Aug 12, 2016 at 8:40 am

Have you thought about yellow? Just my thought on a different color!

SO, SO, SO excited about the arrival of your son who will finally be home! Praying for you all!

  37. Terry

    Blue

  38. Andrea

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:12 am

I prefer the blue, it ties in with the roof very well. And, hey if you don’t like it, rep ain’t it.

  39. Elizabeth

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:23 am

The light blue. Same color as my door!! Although my barn is grey it looks good with the red

  40. Lauren

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:30 am

I would paint the door navy or if you don’t want a blue tone…gray. Here is an example of Navy and an example of gray.:

I think a grey that matches the roof would look nice.

  42. Miranda VanAuken

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:31 am

I think a nice bright blue…something to tie in with that blue bonnets barn quilt you were considering doing. 😉

  43. Wendi

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:35 am

I NEVER tire of red with a shade of turquoise/Aqua/blue. Give it a try….after all…its just paint!

  44. Leslie

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:36 am

Wonder what a navy blue would look like on the door?

  45. Heather

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:38 am

At first, I thought the black was a navy blue and I lost my mind (in a good way). So, I’ll be difficult and vote for a color that isn’t even a choice here. I VOTE FOR NAVY BLUE!!

    Love the robin’s egg blue!

  47. Kathy

Blue looks great, not the black.

  48. Emma

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:44 am

    Definitely blue!!!!

  49. [email protected]

    Aug 12, 2016 at 8:47 am

The robin’s egg blue is my favorite! Perhaps even a slate blue, more like the roof??

So excited for you and Kevin!! You will truly be bringing Steevenson home to a ‘new’ home!! ♥ I just love thinking about the coming days, Layla! It’s a perfect reminder to focus on all of the GOODNESS in the world! Oh, the hugs and kisses… just around the corner!! Heartfelt thanks for sharing with all of us! ♡
