Building An Armoire – Part 2

Sep 30, 2014 By Layla

Hi!

The armoire we’re building with our friend Brian the Carpenter is coming along really great, and I wanted to share some (iPhone) pics of where we’re at with it as of today. Here’s a few shots of the base:

Armoire Base

I wanted it to look just like the cabinet we’ve got at the top of the stairs…

White Lungarno Console from Ballard Designs

…so Brian used it as a guide when he was constructing it.

The armoire itself is made out of birch plywood, and is backed with a thinner luan plywood:

Brian used 2x4s to beef up the area where the doors will be mounted, and trimmed out the sides so that they would match the look of the panels on the doors:

Custom Built Armoire

The hole in the back (near the base) is for cords and outlets to slide into. I wanted the armoire to be able to sit as close to the wall as possible, so having that hole there will help us be able to keep it nice and flush.

As for the doors, I’m thinking we’re going to prime and paint them. I loved this Whipped Mint (Behr) that Liz Marie used on a door over at her place recently:

Whipped Mint by Behr

Our armoire will be painted Simply White, so Liz’s photo gives me a good idea of how that would look when it’s finished. I’m still undecided about it though. What do you think? Would you paint the doors Simply White or Whipped Mint?

Brian’s installing the doors, shelves, crown molding and decorative molding around the top of the base today, and I look forward to sharing another post about it on Friday!

I can’t wait to see the finished product and I love when your pup photobombs! SOO cute!

Maybe I’m a weirdo but I think a white base with whipped mint over the top with a bit of distressing so the white shows through here and there would look amazing. But if you’re not into the distressing thing, I’m kind of leaning toward the mint.

    ☀️Good Morning Layla,
The armoir is going to beautiful! My vote isn’t one of the options. The doors are gorgeous as they are 🙂

      Hi Shelley!
That was my first plan, but now that I can see the tone of them (since the original paint has been stripped off), I want to go ahead and paint them. It might be hard to tell on the screen, but they are sort of pink/green in tone in different places.

The armoire is coming along nicely. I can’t wait to see the finished product. I like both colors. I guess it just depends on whether you want it to stand out from the wall. Then I would paint it Whipped Mint. Either way it will be beautiful!

That armoire is looking good and because I love all white and am trying to go outside my decor box a little bit … go with the whipped mint!

I would go white all the way. Let the doors speak for themselves. They are terrific..

Oh, to have Brian the Carpenter around! The armoire will be beautiful! I am sure what you decide to do will look beautiful. I would have a hard time with the doors being a different color though–for myself. Unless…I did the armoire in white and left the wood doors natural. Did you think of applying some hemp oil to those beauties and then having a white armoire? (I’m sure you did–you always think things through! 🙂 ) Oh, and forgive me for being the safety freak mom–have you considered a tip kit on the armoire (and other tall/heavy items in your home) with your son coming?

Yep! Brian secured a heavy duty metal strap to a stud in the wall behind where it will sit! 🙂

Oooohh, I love the idea of oiling them first!!!! Those doors are SO beautiful and warm in their natural state!!!

I actually would have expected nothing less from you Layla! I just had to say it. You think through everything! A detail girl like me–love it. 🙂

Since you asked for an opinion…I would not paint the doors!

I had originally hoped to keep them raw too, Maggie. Unfortunately they are pinkish and greenish in tone, so I’ve decided to paint them. 🙂

I’d go for white on the outside, including the doors, BUT the Whipped Mint inside the armoire!

I like Lee Ann’s idea – white on the outside and whipped mint on the inside.

Layla, I think you should go with your instinct! Your home is a beautiful, restful and cozy place. So….paint it the mint color. Oh….and your friend Brian is amazing. Does he make house calls to AZ???

The trim on the sides is really really nice! I’d go with the whipped mint. I like the offset color.

Was it a pop-up ad that floated around on the screen, Sarah?

I would definitely go for the green! It makes such a subtle statement, and takes is from ordinary to extraordinary! Great job!

What if you painted the doors mint and then crackle finished the white over them. That way it still gives a nod to the older doors, yet being updated and freshly painted at the same time! Then you still get your hint of mint with out being solid mint on the white cabinet!

    Whipped Mint is lovely!

White for the vertical and horizontal parts of the doors, Whipped Mint for the raised panels.

I think Lee Ann had a wonderful idea. White on the doors with whipped mint inside. Beautiful and clever idea!

Can’t wait to see the finished product. However you paint it will be perfect. I totally agree with Anele that it would look great distressed. Good luck and can hardly wait to see thee finished product!

    Hi Layla,
Your home is lovely, I enjoy following all your projects. My vote is to go with all white, no color. Let the lines of the doors and panels on the side be the focal points. You already have a blue color on your center island, that you see when you’re standing in front of the armoire. I wouldn’t add more color to this nearby space. Some fantastic hardware could be your texture on the white.

The armoire will look lovely, whatever color you choose!
I saw your dog and couldn’t believe how much she looked like ours! My husband found ours on a cold windy day in March in a ditch. We adopted her, but don’t know what breed she is. What breed of dog is yours?

Another vote for white on the outside, whipped mint on the inside!

Since I don”t have a Brian I’d love to have my very handie hubby build an armoire using existing doors – what a great idea. Please post finished photos – especially lots of the interior.
