Lettered Cottage Kitchen Update

Aug 2, 2009 By Layla

After devouring a perfectly seasoned piece of baked tilapia and a side of potato salad for lunch today, I snapped a couple of shots of what I’ve been up to in the Kitchen recently.

Ever since I took these pictures a few months back, I’ve always kind of been drawn to using the color red as the accent color in our Kitchen.

I know. Holy-step-outside-my-neutral-comfort-zone, right?
But I really do love how well it plays with my “barely blue” wall color.

Here are some other blue and red rooms I found on CountryLiving.com…

For a while there, before I painted the walls blue, I was thinking that my accent color was going to be green. So I painted the back wall of our china hutch (that I got from a furniture liquidation warehouse in Montgomery, Alabama) a dusty shade of apple…

Then I filled it up with a bunch of my inexpensive, white IKEA, HomeGoods and Pier One dishes, and some other accessories I had around the house…

…but the combination of apple green and barely blue looked sort of like the Easter Bunny came and had his way with my kitchen. So I started to cut up an old burlap sack that I bought for $3.25 at a flea market. It used to hold walnuts…

So this….

…is now transforming to this:

I will post the full tutorial here when I’m done doing the left side of the cabinet, and have everything in place.

In other burlap news, I picked up this itty bitty burlap sack at a antique store for $3.00 a couple weeks ago. I’m using it as a “plant pot cozy” around the little pot I had on top of my cast iron pedestal…

Would you believe that I’ve had the little sand dollar that’s in the photo since 1997? I picked it up on Manhattan Beach, in California. I’ve kept it with me ever since. I’ve moved so many times…I can’t believe it made this far.

The pebble on the lower left is one that I picked up while travelling with my Mom to Charleston last June, and the “lettered olives” on the right remind me of her so much too.

Another exciting development taking place in the kitchen, is the progress I’ve made on picking out fabrics for the cushion and pillows on the headboard bench.

Here are the ones I’ve settled on:

The cushion will be burlap, with a fancy, little folded skirt out of the blue fabric in the middle, and the pillows will be made out of the floral and the striped fabrics. Two of the pillows will have piping made out of the blue fabric in the middle. Can’t wait to have it all in place!

Do you happen to know the green paint color you used? I currently have a true granny-smith apple green, which I love. However, since I painted my cabinets white, it’s a bit much. I’d like to tone it down and I love the green you have here. If you can’t remember the exact color, do you remember what brand?

Gosh, I sure don’t. 🙁 I’m so sorry, Texas Mama!

Oh well, it was worth a shot. =)
