Adoption Update: Sonny Has A Passport!

Jun 19, 2016 By Layla

SONNY HAS A PASSPORT!!!!!! Our adoption caseworker texted us a photo of it around 4pm on Friday afternoon!! 😀

We excitedly called and texted a few friends and family members, then dashed off to Miyako- our favorite restaurant in Montgomery. It’s become a tradition to celebrate our completed adoption steps there, and the gal that usually seats/serves us has been so sweet throughout the years. When she saw us come through the door this time, she just put down what was in her hands and sped toward me with outstretched arms. “Congratulations!!“, she said, without even needing to knowing why, as she pulled me into a heartfelt hug. One day, I’ll tell her how much I appreciated her shared enthusiasm and pure and palpable relief that something great had happened for our Sonny that afternoon. (If you have adopted or are in the process of adopting, you know what I mean!) 🙂

After we were seated, I shared with her with her that we were celebrating because Sonny had received his passport. She was so excited she pulled another server into the conversation! The second server didn’t know us from Adam’s house cat, but took server #1’s  word for it that she should be excited for us- ha! 😀

A few minutes later, server #2 took our drink order and they both zipped away and back to work.

As we waited for our drinks, Kevin and I talked about how we can hardly wait to move from our little 2-seater table  (that we’ve been sitting at all these years) to the slightly bigger table across the aisle. We visualize Sonny sitting there with us every time. Sure hope he likes Japanese food! 🙂

As for his passport- our in-country rep will keep it safe for us until we get there to pick him up. Which, by the way, will likely happen 5-6 weeks from now. FIVE TO SIX WEEKS FROM NOW!!! I can hardly sit still/think straight/stop smiling. 🙂

I posted that photo on Facebook/Instagram/Twitter on Friday afternoon right before we went to Miyako. Our baby doesn’t look too happy (he was 2 years old at the time the photo was taken and probably a little scared about what was going on), but as you can see in this next photo (sent to us by friends that were at the orphanage visiting their son) he’s gotten a lot less camera shy since that photo was taken.

It took about as long as your timeline as shed update me with steps toward America. He isn’t a baby your Sonny boy is he??!!! Praise God he is soon with you. What joy!!!! Your Baby Son will soon be here!!!

Just read your news and was compelled to go and give my big adopted boy a hug. As he’s now thirteen, he thought mum was ‘being a little weird’, but he’s still my baby and the memories of his adoption are still so fresh to me and his dad. Congratulations to you both and a heartfelt good luck for a speedy resolution to this long process you have endured.

So exciting! It is amazing how adoption illuminates gospel principles! This has been such a beautiful picture of God’s relentless pursuit of our hearts, and his celebration dances along the process.

Congratulations! Thank you for the reminder that the wait is so worth it and of the joy once the wait is almost over. We waited 5.5 years to adopt our twins from China. Sometime is the midst of challenging behavior, piles of laundry, and oh so little “me time” you can forget how truly blessed you are to our to have these little people call you mom.
