A Heron Painting For the Dining Room

May 7, 2015 By Layla

“Creativity is the Blue Heron within us waiting to fly; through her imagination, all things become possible.”
–Nadia Janice Brown

Meet Hazel the heron:

Heron Painting by Ruthie Carlson | The Lettered Cottage Dining Room

My friend Ruthie painted her…with a palette knife.

Heron Painting | Ruthie Carlson | Gray Reclaimed Wood Frame

I know, right?! Blows me away, the things she creates with that knife of hers.

Ruthie Carlson Art | Heron Painting

I picked it up at her place the other night, and it became one of my most favorite things before I even had it back home.

We framed it with some reclaimed lumber, and I just love how it adds to rhythm of our home.

Serenity.

Funny how our favorite colors- scraped thick and thin, layer on layer with tones peeking through, have the power to silence and lift us, isn’t it?

Wonder-full.

PS- Here’s a link to Ruthie’s Etsy shop if you’d like to see more of her palette knife creations! XO

I love it too! I could see that in my home — I think it would go with many different decorating styles.

Very serene. I love looking out my kitchen window and seeing those beautiful and graceful birds in your canal.

I love the heron and am going to check Ruthie out! I just bought my first commissioned piece by a local artist here in Memphis and she paints in the same style with a palette knife. I am a stay at home mom so I started selling stuff I was hoarding and was able to pay for it as a present to my husband. Check out http://www.katietoombs.com for more art like Ruthie’s.

It’s beautiful! I have a friend who does palette knife paintings and he just blows me away with them. I’ve tried it and it’s not easy to get the detail. Fun to do though.
What a treasure for you. It’s perfect.

Hi Layla, Has anyone else commented on not being able to see any pictures when they open a post on their IPad? : (. I see the main one when I get it I my inbox but as soon as I open it….nothing. The painting looks beautiful. You have such fun decorating taste that is also calming. I love every room in the house.

      Hi Angela!

I’ve not heard that from anyone else, but I’ll ask my web tech why that may be happening to you. I’ll keep you posted…thank you for the heads up!

I added a large heron on canvas to my bathroom a few weeks ago and love looking at it each morning. I just found Ruthie Carlson art a few weeks ago and this one is awesome!!

Beautiful! There is one that hangs near a pond nearby and I have tried hard to capture it with my camera but no success yet. Herons have such a grace about them and are a favorite of mine – as are you with your touching last sentence. Wonder-full indeed.

I want one! Does she only do one-of-a-kinds? These are all over Hilton Head – our favorite summer vaca spot – and it would be a great reminder!

Love, Love, Love. My house could do with a painting like this. We live in a beach town in the NE and I have a cottagey saltbox colonial. Absolutely gorgeous

Layla, she is gorgeous. I have always been drawn to artwork featuring birds and I adore the colours in this. Beautiful and so perfect against your planed wall 🙂

I love this. Is this a commissioned-for-Layla-only piece? 🙂 Or is there a chance there will be more like it for sale? Blue Herons hold a special meaning for me. I checked her Etsy page and website but didn’t see another like it…..

    Lucky you. It is beautiful!

I love the painting and your brilliant frame–that was not at all what I was expecting you to make and I love the twist on traditional you did.
