Kourtney’s Master Bedroom – Pick My Presto

Aug 17, 2014 By Layla

Alrighty! It’s presto change-o time! 😀

Remember the master bedroom photos Kourtney sent me last week?

Gray Lake Master Bedroom

Well, I had some fun with them in Photoshop this weekend, and if you move your cursor back and forth over the photos below, you can see what I came up with in presto change-o action:

Since you can pretty much go wild when you’re just trying things out in Photoshop (vs. buying real design elements and doing real con$truction), I thought I’d really have some e-fun with this one. (And, of course, anything I added to Kourtney’s photos could be purchased or created in a variety of different ways with a variety of budgets, and over any length of time.)

Since Kourtney and her hubby already planked the wall behind their headboard, I thought it would be neat to add more white painted planks to the ceiling to really highlight the fact that it’s angled. (Lucky ducks!) I also added some rustic wood beams (they could be beams constructed from real reclaimed wood, or those hollow, faux wood beams), just to add some contrast and to further draw the eye up to that fantastic angled ceiling.

Kourtney said they wanted to add french doors, so I swapped those out in my inspiration photos so she could see what that would (kind of) look like. I also added a oil-rubbed bronze curtain rod and some drapes on each side of the doors because I liked the idea of adding some softness to the vertical plane, too. (If privacy/light is an issue, a different type of door, or more drapes and shutters/shades could be used.)

I popped in a new bed and headboard so Kourtney could get a feel for the kind of headboard she mentioned wanting in her email. (Kourtney- The bed I used was photographed at the right angle on PotteryBarn.com and it already had the striped duvet on it. Didn’t want you to think I was saying you should totally change your bedding- I love your current quilt, too!) 😀

I added some salvaged doors to the bathroom and closet door openings (even though Kourtney mentioned she wanted a sliding barn style door over the bathroom), because I felt like two coordinating (not necessarily matching) old doors would look/function better on that wall at the foot of the bed. (Especially when you’re in bed and looking in that direction.)

And last but not least, I popped in a tall, very shallow, armoire to hide the TV in. It doesn’t have to be that exact armoire…just something that will offer more storage, and maybe a pop of color too.

Keep in mind, as always, these are all just ideas. Spontaneous, totally flexible, just-for-fun ideas that may or may not actually work for the couple or in their room. (Boom.) I could have gone a thousand different directions with the photos, but this is what I came up with when I sat down with them this weekend. (If I sat down with them again next weekend, I’m sure they would look totally different!) 😀

Here are the still photos for those who aren’t able to view the interactive photos above:

I saw another possible idea for the headboard wall, but I didn’t have time to do a great job of Photoshopping it together. In a nutshell, I *think* they’d have enough room to add shelves all the way around their headboard if they wanted to…like this:

Master Bedroom | Makeover Ideas | Cottage Style

Master Bedroom | Makeover Ideas | Cottage Style | Bookcase Around Headboard

Again, please excuse the super sloppy Photoshop job there. They’d probably have to move that black dresser behind the bedroom door, but I *think* they could even tie the woodwork into the niche above the bedroom door if they wanted to build some cubbies up there, too.

Here’s the interactive photo for those who want to see it presto change-o:

I’m thinking the shelving could be added in front of the planks they put up, and maybe they would even make the upholstered headboard themselves?

Oh! One more note for Kourtney- I think I’d hang a large mirror where you’ve got the framed wedding photos right now. It would reflect light from the other side of the room, and you’d feel like there was another window there- which would be neat. Then, you could hang the wedding photos on the wall to the right of the bathroom door- stacked one on top of the other. But, again, feel free to take or leave that suggestion as well! 😀

Thanks for the fun opportunity- can’t wait to see what y’all do!

PS- Do you have a photo you’d like presto change-o’d? Send an email to PickMyPresto (at) aol (dot) com. In the subject line, tell me what kind of room it is (i.e. Living room, kids bedroom, etc) In the body of the email, include your name, your blog name (if you have one) your design likes & dislikes, and three large photos of the space in question. (No links please.) They should be as crystal clear as possible, and measure at least 400 pixels high x 600 pixels wide. (In other words: at least 4″high x 6″ wide) The bigger the better though! Make sure they’re photos you’re comfortable with me showing and writing about on my blog. Oh, and since I love surprises, I probably won’t email you to let you know I’ve “picked your presto” unless I have a specific question for you about your space.

Want to learn how to create your own inspiration photos using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements? Check out my Room Makeover training class over at ShootFlyShoot.com. You do not need to know how to use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. I teach the class from a total beginners perspective and once you purchase the class you own it, so you can watch and re-watch it as many times as you’d like! 🙂

Whenever I see beams or ceiling fans over a bed it give me the Feng Shui shudders http://fengshui.about.com/od/fengshuiforbedroom/qt/beams_fan_bed.htm
    Nice otherwise though.

Oh layla you are such a gifted lady. The wood floor is an important element, I hope she can install one. I would suggest reclaimed barn wood for all the foto frames. And the quilt from PB really is lovely, if she’s on a budget she can find a white duvet at ikea on the cheap, and throw her own quilt at the foot of the bed.
Ikea also has beautiful linen curtain panels up to 130″ (I think), she could add a contrast fabric along the leading edge of each panel for a custom look.
You Photoshop skills are the bomb!!
We need an adoption update 🙂 Praying for ya.

Gorgeous! I love that armoire, too. Can I bother you to include which type of hardwood you photoshopped in here? I want to redo my floors and it looks like a nice mid-tone.Thanks! I love all the contrast between the wood and the white.

I really like the changes you made but my favorite has to be the doors. My late husband & I bought a bunch of interior doors from an old hotel which had been very popular in the late 1800 early 1900 hundreds. We were planning to replace the interior doors in our house but never got around to it. Since he was the one who knew how to do that kind of thing it’s not likely to happen now that he’s gone, maybe it’s time to figure out something else for them. Wow, I’m sorry, didn’t mean to be a downer.

I do like the changes you made to the room, Do you offer a basic how to class for beginners on how to use digital cameras, download pics, etc?

I love reading these 🙂 I would also totally love to see what elements are used in the actual transformations – be sure to do a follow up if possible!
    Thanks for your lovely inspiration.

    Hello Layla,

I just started subscribing to your blog after finding it on Bloglovin. I find it very creative and expressive with loads of great design ideas.

What a great design on Kourtneys room. I would have never thought of the beams and the reclaimed doors really give that room the WOW factor. I never used Photoshop but I think it’s a great idea, sorta like playing with cutout pieces. Great change-o!

Absolutely love the shelves surrounding the bed, although I think I’d skip the heavily padded headboard in favor of featuring all the pretty planking they did. Love the French doors and the mirror opposite them always expands and brightens a room. Great job, Layla.

I love when you do these! I should send pictures of my entire 1978-year-old house where almost everything is original and yes, ugly. 😉 Even better, I wish I could afford to fly you to Utah to just redo it all for me. My kids sap all my creative energy.;p Anyhow–I love your style!!
