Christmas Tabletop Decorating

Dec 20, 2013 By Layla

I had soooo much fun creating today’s wintry coffee table vignette!

Christmas Decorating | Natural Decor

I started with my green tray (Pottery Barn) and stump slice (Michaels):

I sprinkled in some faux greenery, snow flakes, and ornaments…

…and wrapped some little boxes, topped with more leftover ribbon and “fauxliage”:

I wrapped this next little box with yarn:

I’ve always loved the way balls of yarn look, so I thought a cube of yarn would probably be pretty cute, too. I used double-sided tape (and hot glue) to secure the yarn (and yarn ends) to the box, and after I had it completely covered, I sat there and stared at it, trying to figure out what to top it with. Buttons from my Grandma Evelyn’s old sewing basket popped into my head, so I dashed over to the closet I keep it in.

As I reached up to grab it, I smiled and thought, “thank you for still helping me after all these years, Grandma“. 🙂

The small book under the biggest gift box is actually one of those cardboard book boxes you can find at craft stores. This is how it looked when I got it (70% off at Michaels):

A few coats of leftover off-white paint, some antiquing wax, and a stamped-on number 3…

…and voila! A fun little “lift” that reminds us of our (soon-to-be) family!

I nestled our mistletoe in underneath my galvanized pedestal and told Kevin that since it’s sitting on our coffee table (vs. hanging in a doorway), he has to kiss me whenever we’re sitting on the couch together.

And speaking of sitting in the living room, why didn’t you tell me about the awesomeness going on over on the Hallmark and Lifetime channels right now?

‘Round the clock cheesy/mushy Christmas movies that have completely sucked me in!

If only I could get Kevin to sit down on the couch and watch one with me. 😉

You had me at the “3” Book!!!! Ahhhhhhhh

Admit it………you wanted Kev on the couch, so he could give you a smoochie………..you did not have movie watching on your mind.

Your table is beautiful! I love the yarn boxes. When The Mr and I were first married and VERY poor, I would take down the pictures on the wall and wrap them up as presents and then hang them back up. Aluminum foil was great because it would reflect the light 🙂 I love your yarn box it is so cute you can certainly save it and use it again. And unless it is shoot em up and lots of action I can’t get The Mr to watch the really good movies.

This is absolutely adorable! I love how simple but beautiful it all looks grouped together. I think I now know what to do with an awkward shelf space on my armoire next season! (Actually, you could totally carry this through the winter so maybe a trip to the stores are in my future!)

I love the yarn box you hand made and the way you are still connected with your grandma through those beautiful buttons! Wishing you a warm Christmas filled with lots of kisses by the mistletoe. So looking forward to meeting your sweet P in the near future – 2014 will be a fun-filled year for you! ox
p.s. the white candle on the stump slice looks like a glass of milk – LOVE!

So-o-o wonderfully wintery! Glad you remembered the mistletoe. I found a HUGE fresh bunch on the bike trail. Have you taken a sneak peek into that tiny little brown box that secret Santa left you early? Wait for Christmas! : ) Love ya’ both!

So pretty and awesome! I’ve been studying the pictures for the past 10 minutes, trying to find out how I can recreate the look on my coffee table with stuff I already have. My Christmas colour scheme is red and purple, so I’ll use those colours, but I will try to recreate the look. Great inspiration as always – I’m looking so much forward to every new post from you guys.

So pretty, Layla! How do you keep KitKat out of the snow? I have to put my decorating with greenery, real or faux up higher, so my cherubs don’t run around the house with it.

That’s beautiful, and, for the record, if you start your sweet P off with decorations as the norm, your sweet P will stop paying attention to them after a while, which is a good thing. I have breakables and pretties all over and my 2, 7, and 10 year old boys do not mess with it inappropriately at all–even at other people’s houses. Our friends’ kids who are used to cleared surfaces are completely intrigued though, so I’ve found that having everything on a tray (like you did) to be moved as needed is a decorating Mama’s best friend : )
    So happy for you both!

Your tabletop vignette is stunning! I love what you did with the big book and the yarn covered, button topped little gift box is adorable. I’m pinning so I can copy the heck out of it.

I have been watching the cheesy Christmas movies since they started the beginning of November. They make me so happy! I’m so sad they are almost over 🙁
