Brass Lamp Makeover

Sep 13, 2013 By Layla

Well, we’re *almost* done with the kitchen makeover I mentioned in one of my blog posts last week. Just a few more finishing touches and it’ll be ready to go! I look forward to sharing a post about the whole makeover very soon, but today, I thought I’d share a quick little lamp makeover idea. The lamp will be going into the newly-designed kitchen on Sunday, so next time you see it, it’ll be part of a room reveal post- yahoo!

Let me start this lamp re-vamp by saying, I’ve got a things for old metal lamps. Tin, brass…you name it- I seem to always gravitate towards them at flea markets and second hand shops. Some of them are fine the way they are, and some of them are fun to spruce up. Like this one I spotted at J & G in Prattville last week:

Old Brass Lamp

I snatched it up with a quickness! I had some left over oil-rubbed bronze spray paint from a previous project at home…

…and with the addition of a new $7 shade from Lowes, it was lookin’ like new in no time!

And here’s the lamp shade tip du jour: I looked at Walmart, Home Depot and Target before finding the kind of shade I needed. Lowes was the only one that carried small shades that clip to the top of the lightbulb…not the bottom.

I love hunting for lamps that have an industrial edge to them, and the elements that make up this one give it so much “mechanical personality”, don’t you think?

Not too feminine, not too masculine. Perfect for a family-friendly desk space in the kitchen, and I can’t wait to show it to you in it’s new home SOON!

Great Find! I’ve never used that spray paint before but now I’m looking around wondering what I could paint with it. BTW yesterday I stopped by and you had a new blog header, and today it is back to your original one. I just thought I’d let you know I thought it looked really cute 🙂 Have a great day!

Thanks, Emily! The new header is still up there, but you might have to clear your cache or history on the computer you’re on today in order to see it- otherwise it’ll keep pulling up the old one. 😀 Hope you have a great day, too- and thanks so much for swinging by for a visit today!

I love that paint! I repainted all of the silver handles, knobs, hooks, etc. in my bathroom with that color! The lamp looks brand new!

I have a similar lamp in my living room. I love it just like it is…some aged brass and wood…but I’m wondering if I would love it even more spray painted oil rubbed bronze. 🙂
    Thanks for the inspiration!

What a beautiful lamp! I love the new header! What font did y’all use? Praying for your adoption journey!

Jessica, if you go to the upper left corner, in Layla’s ‘about me’ section, there is a place to click on at the bottom to ‘read more’. If you do that, it will take you to another page that should answer most of your questions 🙂

Thanks, Jessica! The lettering was actually created by the talented gals over at http://1canoe2.com, and thank you so much for the adoption prayers!

I’ve got a couple of those lamps on my desk at work….just waiting for a makeover. I’m ‘seeing’ one of mine sporting a bright pink for my granddaughters bedroom! $5.99 was a great deal!

Good eye! Looks great. I could see it in stainless steel for a modern cottage look too.

You got that lamp for $5.99?

Never in a million years here, garage sale, thrift, nowhere. Lucky find, and I love what you did with it! Funny that this post should come along now. I’m getting ready to paint a ginger jar lamp.

    Nice!!!!

I kind of cringed at that lamp in the first picture, but I kind of LOVE the re-do! Amazing what a little TLC can do 🙂

I love your blog, I love your house. I love your neighbors houses.
This lamp update came st a perfect time. My brass floor lamp is old & looking tired but new ones are SO expensive. I will definitely do this! My husband will be happy I’m recycling. Thank you. You & your husband are so talented, kind & generous. I know you’ll be fabulous parents too. Blessings to you both.

Beautifully redone Layla. Speaking of lamps – I have been wondering…did you keep your PB Stanyan lantern or did it stay with the old house? I have been looking for it in the photos of your new house and hope you kept it!

A-mazing what a little paint and a new shade can do for an old girl! Looks great – can’t wait to see the rest : )

What a great before and after – beautiful job! What did you use to prepare the metal before you painted; did you lightly sand it first or just degrease it?

I love this! I inherited a brass chandelier in my dining room when I purchased my house and that seems a much more cost effective solution at this point in time than replacing the whole light fixture. Any suggestions for prep before spray painting?

What a great job of bringing new life to this lamp! It sometimes takes a certain talent to see the ‘potential’! Thank you for your direction as where to find the clip-on shades. I felt like I had looked everywhere and now I know that Lowes is the place to find them! Thanks, Layla!
