We’ve been pluggin’ away, little by little, on the north wall in our master bedroom, and man does it feel good to finally be getting closer to the finish line!
Here’s what it looked like before we painted it Martha’s Stewart’s “Blue Hubbard” (Sherwin Williams)…
…and here’s what it looks like today…
You’ll notice we finally put the bathroom door trim back on, and we managed to attach some more of our 1″ x 4″ MDF boards as crown molding and base boards too. Woo hoo!
Next up, we’ll be building a barn door…
(Note: This is an inspiration drawing, and that is not our actual bathroom.)
…and creating some kind of built-in wall pocket unit for our TV, DVD player, and other little pretties to sit in too…
(Again. Just an inspiration drawing.)
Who knows if we can actually pull it off, or if it’ll look exactly like that, but we’re definitely gonna give it a whirl and see what happens!
I’d like for it to have a small, flip-down door (below the TV) so that we can hide the electronic stuff from view. Kinda like this…
And although we’re fans of the open look, I guess another option would be doors on the upper part of it…
What do you think? Doors to cover the TV, or no doors?
Wait! Before you answer, keep in mind we’re still planning to build a two-doored version of this guy on the wall opposite the mirrored closet doors…
It’ll sit to the right of the Blue Hubbard-painted bump out…
In the meantime, we’ll start wrapping our heads around how to build that barn door track for less than the barn door supply companies are selling them for. Wish us luck!
PS– We’re not 100% sure about what color, finish or style the barn door will be…we just threw that blue one in there as an example!

I have never seen this barn door idea and I love it! I would definitely cover the tv. You don’t want it to distract from the great look of the barn door. Can’t wait to see this finished!
Felicity@ Our Little Beehive
Did you see the barn door at House Tweaking? Hers is in their master too and is stunning! I think they posted a tutorial recently too, which may help in your hardware quest. xoxo
Carla
How exciting!! Oh they are going to look so awesome!!
Annalea
Some friends of ours rigged up barn-style doors in the guesthouse they built, hung by pulleys on some kind of metal rod. You can see a photo here: http://rivendaletheborensfarm.blogspot.com/2009/12/work.html
If you’re looking for something beefier, I know pulleys come in much bigger sizes, as does metal rod . . . hope this helps!

In my opinion I like it better WITHOUT the doors covering the tv. The openess of it would balance out the lockers on the other side of the room. And I’m totally diggin the barn door idea! LOVE LOVE LOVE!
On a side note, prayers for you guys in the adoption journey. I think of y’all often and hope it all goes smoothly and you get that perfect little 2-3 yr old boy/girl to help complete your family. And I’m anxiously waiting on their room and what you do with it! hehehe

I love barn doors and can´t wait to see yours. As to the TV behind doors, I think it’s best without them. Unless you use the TV once or twice a week, if not, my experience is they’ll stay open most of the time.
Meggan
Have you seen this blog? They just made their own barn door, very similar to what you’re wanting, and have been posting tutorials. I’ve been coveting and trying to convince my husband that we can do this!

oh my gosh i love it too much!!!!

Okay, first off, whatever you choose will be smashing because it always is. I do prefer the entertainment niche to be open, but what if you did something like the bottom right picture in the barndoor montage that looks like an office, and the barn doors open like curtains would. Then when the left sided barn door is open, it is covering the entertainment niche. There would be some functionality issues to work out, but it could be an interesting way to cover up electronics. Or the barn door could slide to the left instead of the right if you just want one door. Secondly, how about you do the full four cabinet thingie instead of the two door version of the four door thingie and build it around the bump out. So the first two cabinets would be alot more shallower (not even close to being a proper sentence or a real word but oh well) than the third and fourth cabinet. Upon glancing at the four cabinet thingie, you would have no idea that there is a bump out.

That will be great! Love it. I also recognize the proposed vanity as a PB vanity which I also own. Love that too!

Love the barn door! You are so stinkin talented Layla! 🙂
And I vote for no doors on the tv wall. I don’t have a good reason, except that I just thought it looked better without. Love that anthro inspired dresser too – so cute!
Camille
I am SO looking forward to hearing about the creation of your barn door. I have plans to do the exact same thing for our bathroom door, so this is a big deal to me!
Robyn (Out Of Ours)
I LOVE the barn door idea! Brilliant! WRT the doors on the tv cabinet, I’d say yes. It’s supposed to be bad feng shui to have electronic equipment in the bedroom. I also think that by hiding the tv, your eye will automatically be drawn to the barn door rather than the black box.
Jo @ To a Pretty Life
Your door is going to be gorgeous! I love the blue colour in your example. I’m planning to paint our doors here. They’re all too white, and there is too many of them. I must say also that I love your “crown molding”!
As for doors over the TV, they do look nice, but maybe ask yourself if you will ever close them. If not, they might just get in the way.
Katie
Okay, I love the barn doors! There are several places I would LOVE to put them in my house. My main concern is how do you lock them for places like beds or baths? If the door is on the inside of the room I’m sure latches or hooks of some sort would work, but what about doors on the outside of the room, such as your bath above? Our master/bath layout is almost exactly the same. You guys always seem to have The Answers, hoping you see this one.
I got my surprise giveaway prize, btw. LOVE it. Thank you!
Maureen
Could you cover the electronics with a fabric or bamboo roman shade? That would be softer than doors and add pattern or texture.
nikki@kreativeknack
I vote no doors too! By the way…I so needed to see this post right now, we are building an addition at the moment, and were almost going to frame the laundry room wall to hold a pocket door…and I wasn’t too set on that, and now I have another option! Woo Hoo! I love this idea! Thank you thank you!
claire
DO NOT COVER THE DVD PLAYER! DVDs are on their way OUT! It’s only a matter of time before everything is on a memory-stick! You may as well leave it open for books in the future!
Kelly Szilagyi
I love the barn doors, I would also like to do something like that in our bedroom one day so be sure to give us all the details!! As for the TV area – no doors, definitely no doors!
morg
I Love the barn door!! but I say no doors covering tv…
Cheryl
love the blue hubbard color. very pretty.
I also like your idea with the barn door. very cool. with all the soft coloring and the whites a dark stained barn door would look awesome.
i think open shelving for your tv and accessories would look nice. I too am a fan of the close the doors on this stuff, but it somehow looks better left open when i looked at both of them in your post.
the room is really starting to take shape. the final reveal is going to be fabulous as you and your hubby always put some great finishing touches at the end.
Tania
no door for the tv – absolutely love the barn door idea and those lockers – stunning!!!
Marianne@Songbird
Oh my gosh, that bedroom of yours is turning out to be such a heavenly thing! I love it. I have loved barn doors ever since I saw them on Whisperwood Cottage. Never occured to me you could actually make them yourself. I’ll be looking and learning! Can’t wait.
Mom in High Heels
Oh, I LOVE the barn door. I’m sure you two are going to make it look super fabulous! I can’t wait to see the completed project!
As for the TV cover, why not a set of doors that match the wardrobe thing you’re going to build for the other side of the room? You could actually make two doors for each side that look like individual doors, but are actually bi-folds, kind of like bi-fold closet doors. Does that make sense? I can totally see it in my head, but not sure if I’m explaining it right.
MaryBeth
We used a tambour (like on a roll top desk) to conceal the electronics in the entertainment niche over our fireplace. It works great and stays out of the way.
Debbie - Pink Pig
Love the barn door – we have one leading to our master bedroom and i just put one in my kitchen reno for my pantry… Can’t wait to see your finished product!
Sharon
Love the barn door idea. I would not put doors on the TV … really … it is what it is …. and won’t they be open most of the time?

It was a HAPPY day for me when I discovered your blog. My GOLDEN GIRL of diy interior design! Your ideas are inspiration! I, too, have wanted to add barn doors to my master bathroom for ages and can’t wait to see yours!
I visit your blog many times a week and L.O.V.E. seeing your home evolve in the most tasteful and creative way. Regarding the exposed t.v…it will look GREAT out in the open!
I plan on sending photos to you of my family room and hope to be chosen for one of your make over posts.
Best to you and Kevin!
Treva
I love your master bedroom design and the barn door concept looks great. I used your bedding as an inspiration for my master bedroom redo and it’s almost done. 😉
If you decided you don’t want to do a built-in for the TV, you could build a hutch for on top of the cabinet that you have. I have been building a hutch from plans on http://www.ana-white.com for an existing cabinet I already have. It is turning out so well, and with the great AL weather this week, I plan to bring it outside and paint it this weekend.
I can’t wait to see how everything turns out in your beautiful bedroom.
Stacie M.
I love the barn door! Good luck.
Bethany
Swoon! Love the wall color and… EVERYTHING! TVs are sleek and compact now, not the big ol’ boxy eyesores they used to be- I vote no doors! 🙂
Kathleen O
Just a footnote to a great idea. Years ago I saw a kitchen design that used a matching long cabinet door as a barn door to cover and slide over the wall oven. I think the hardware from the barn door sticks out just enough to cover the handle of the oven. No matter how much you spend on those wall ovens they ruin a kitchen design, don’t you think?
Also, I’d love to use the ‘nook’ idea as well. But what if that wall is a structural wall and some of the studs have been cut??? Maybe I’ll just check on that before the sawzall fires up 🙂
Sara @The Fat Hydrangea
Wow, i LOVE this idea!! Way to take a builder basic room and make it custom and awesome. You are a genius!
Holly
Love your barn door idea! We put up a barn door over our pantry and love it! I shopped the reproduction hardware, too, and they were outrageous. I was ready to go the Tractor Supply route when our builder mentioned that he had an old barn track…out in his barn! We were able to buy the entire set for a fourth of the repro price – rail, rollers and two hangers – and it looks awesome. At some point, we’ll have to get the bearings re-done in the rollers because they’re not exactly a smooth glide. However, in the meantime, I kinda like it…it’s noisy like a real barn door. 🙂 Anyway, good luck…maybe you’ll stumble onto something, too!
Silvia
Ooh, the barn door exactly how you have looks great- I love blue! Also the built-in looks much better without doors cover the TV but the flip-down drawer looks nice to cover the more unsightly smaller electronics 🙂
northern cottage
love love love these barn doors and CAN”T WAIT to see how yours turns out…..then when you’ve done practicing at your house – you guys can come over here and put one in at our cottage! Your plan is beautiful beautiful beautiful!
Ginger
I just told the hubs yesterday that I wanted to put two barn doors between our kitchen and dining room (as soon as he rips that wall out and opens it up) and guess what color I told him….turquoise to tie into the hutch we are using in there! When I saw your post last night, I thought I was dreaming. I’m sure it will be great and will be done on a budget! Can’t wait to see it. The room looks peaceful and serene so far!
Joy
Oh! I love the barn door idea. I’ve thought about doing that in one of my rooms. Would love to see a tutorial. And I think no doors over the tv. 🙂
Lori
Layla,
My husband and I just built a similar barn door for our pantry. We built the track and rollers ourselves for less than $75.00. If you’d like to see some photos of what we came up with just let me know where to email them to 🙂
Lori
Julie
Layla- I love the barn door idea and every other idea that you come up with. 🙂
I was going to do install separating barn doors in my house and purchased the hardware at Tractor Supply Company for $80. Unfortunately, the plaster in my 60 year old house wouldn’t cooperate and I ended up installing the doors as French Doors. (There are pictures at http://thedoodlingbug.com/photos-webster_street.)
Tenacwalker- your home is beautiful too!
Shannon
Love the barn door look! We’re planning it out for our masterbedroom closet door. And I like the tv pocket without any doors…it seems like too much with the dresser, the cupboard doors, the barn door and the mirrored doors. But that’s just mho.

Oh that born door is going to look FANTASTICAL! Love the Hubbard blue, too. As for the shelves, my vote is for open – no doors.
Amanda
This post made me laugh all over again when you referred to the wall pocket . . . thinking about how your hubby doesn’t like the word, niche! Can’t wait to see the barn door!

We had a barn door style between bedroom and bath. We disliked the door not being secure at the bottom. We tried to “rig” something to hold it, but just were never satisfied. I love the concept, but we didn’t succeed. You, no doubt, will.
As for the doors over the TV, I say leave it open. I think doors would just be in the way. If you watch TV before falling asleep, someone is going to have to get out of bed to close! I’m too lazy!
Love your “stuff”.
Mandy Ford
LOVE this idea! Did you see this blog post about the exact same project? They DIY’d their door as well…

Layla,
I vote no doors on the TV section. I love the sliding barn doors…I can’t wait to see the room finished…it’s so wonderful already! You and Kevin are amazing.

Awesome room transformation! I know for a fact that you will be able to pull all this off in real life. As for the doors in front of the tv…not liking them. I’d leave it open.
Abby
Ok Layla the barn door is amazing! i was just trying to figure out how we could make one for a baby gate over our stairs….Good luck building one.
I vote no doors over the TV. Here is why…. Will you ever shut them? Speaking from experience, we never ever shut them, so they are always in the way. Also, as a mama and I know you are in the process of becoming a mama, it is one less thing you will have to shut. (: That’s IMHO, oh one more thing your bedroom is turning out beautiful and it looks so cozy and relaxing! Great job!
Shelly
It’s gonna look awesome however you end up doing it!!…I say YES to doors for the TV. A TV is very unromantic for the bedroom–I know, we all have them in there, but…what about doors that can open & slide inside the cabinet?? Sounds pretty tricky, but was just a thought. Love your blog & thanks for all the inspiration!
