Happy Friday, y’all!
The kitchenette area of the Bungalow Barn is finally coming together, so I thought I’d share an update today. Jim and Katie bought the cabinets at Ikea, and Brian the Carpenter put them together. He said it wasn’t the easiest job in the world, but for the price, they were well worth the extra figuring out.
And to give you an idea of how cost effective they were, Katie got a bid from a local home improvement store for the exact same number and style of cabinets and it was just over $8000. The Ikea cabinets were $2800 and change. Neither of those figures includes installation, but what a big difference, huh?
As for the quality, I’ve read plenty of blog posts by people who have had Ikea cabinets that have held up wonderfully for more than 10 years, so I think Katie will be able to enjoy them for a long time. We used some left over beadboard for the backsplash, and Brian is going to install shelves and a mug rack above the sink area this weekend.
Kevin picked up the knobs and bin pulls at Home Depot…
Another neat change Brian helped with was on the bottom side of the trusses above the kitchen and living room. They used to look like this:
It was just four 2×12″ boards sandwiched together and I never really liked the way they looked, so I was determined to figure out a way to make them look like one, big beam. My solution was to have Brian attach thin, luan plywood to the bottom side, and then cap the edges with tiny, L-shaped molding.
To create a more intentional and finished look, I had him put it on the top edge of the beam too.
Kevin’s going to prime and paint the unfinished luan today, so it’ll match the rest of the beam. We still haven’t found anyone who will climb up there and clad the (ugly) 2x4s with nicer wood…so if you know of anyone in the Montgomery/Pike Road area- send ’em our way! 🙂

Thank you! 😀

High fives on the IKEA cabs! We currently have our 3rd IKEA kitchen. They keep adding improvements, like the soft-closed doors + drawers. There’s even a cabinet style that has the British “no toe kick’ option. I dunno what that’s called, but I’ll bet you know of which I type. 😉

I put IKEA cabinets in our church kitchen and lobby area and they have held up great for over 12 years!

We have a little beach cottage that needs a updating and I keep coming back to your posts for inspiration – think I’ll make it a point to stop into IKEA now, thanks!

I love my IKEA kitchen! Great pick!
I really like the way that the beams turned out. I also like the look of the unpainted part of the beam. It looks like it was supposed to be that way.

So when are these folks getting to move in? Those are the same IKEA cabinets I have. Love them. Easy to clean and the soft close is so nice.
Layla
Whenever the barn is done and everyone is ready to transition. 🙂

Hi Layla,
This whole idea of yours to add the barn bungalow to your house is genious! I recently saw a similar home in McKinney, Texas and just loved it! This kitchen is just beautiful and will no doubt be a joyful gathering place!
Ashlea
This is coming together wonderfully. Too bad the builder did not use some nicer 2×4’s- that is definitely an awkward, high little job. Hope you find someone reasonable.

Looking great!!

have friends who used Ikea in every room that required cabinets in a home they purchased in a high end neighborhood as a repo. It is a gorgeous home and fits in beautifully with the rest of the homes. They were able to create a home that fit their needs perfectly. Her brother had previously done the same so they had something to base their decisions on as far as quality. I hope you all will be just as pleased as they have been.

Nice! What color and material will countertops be?
Layla
Not sure yet! 🙂
Ashley
We did a butcher block countertop similar inspired by Miss Mustard Sred. It was an affordable diy option and was lovely with a high end looking routered edge. They would look great here! I’m sure anything you pick will be stellar, though.

This is perfect for in-laws and family. We would love to do this kind of addition for my mother-in-law but not sure how much it would cost. Could you give me a general range of what it cost to add this barn to your home?
Layla
Sure! I’d say expect to pay between $65-$105 depending on how you design it and what kinds of materials you use! 🙂
Cherie
Love the kitchen! I think a black quartz countertop would be lovely. You have kept Brian the carpenter busy — would he be interested in building a small home on Smith Lake near Jasper?
Layla
Hi! He doesn’t build homes, but he loves a good trim or carpentry project! 🙂
Rebecca
Layla, It looks lovely. Could you let us know which IKEA cabinet faces you used? Are they white or off white? Thank you for sharing!
Layla
They’re listed as “off-white” but they look pretty white to us. I can’t remember what the faces are called…Kevin and his mom picked them out. Kevin said it was the “least expensive white ones they had”. 🙂
Rebecca
Thanks!
Dorothy
They look great beams look much better with the extra details added – the space is shaping up lovely!

Obviously Mom and Dad have a place to stay currently. Seems like a long project. Patience is a virtue.
Layla
Yep! They’re comfy and cozy in their current home. 🙂 No real rush to move. This place will be here whenever everyone is ready and it’s finished.

Looks great! We’ve had Ikea cabinets for a year now and LOVE them! I’m not obsessed with Ikea, their bookcases and storage furniture has held up well too.

This is why I love seeing what you are up to. Well, there’s other things too, like your family updates and honesty about your life, etc. But, I like that you are so upfront about saving money and being resourceful. And, i was wondering how the Bungalow Barnes was coming along.

I’m thinking that many families need to visit the idea of attached space for elderly loved ones. It’s smart, practical and inclusive. The Amish have had “Dawdie Houses” forever.
A kind smart move, Layla and Kevin! This is so much more than an addition…..it’s a statement of family!

What color are you using on the walls in the Barn?
Layla
Simply White. It’s what I use everywhere! 🙂
