Well, we still haven’t gotten around to building the barn door we talked about back in this post, but we did manage to make the bed at least once this month give our bed a quick spring/summer makeover this month!
We just swapped out the toile quilt and shams it was previously sportin’ for the quilt and shams my Mom hooked us up with for our birthday’s last year.
(In case any inquiring minds want to know- the striped quilt and shams are from Pottery Barn’s “Clearlake” collection, which is now discontinued, but I have seen pieces on eBay from time to time. The white and porcelain blue striped duvet and boudoir pillow cover are from PB’s Grand Embroidered collection, and you can find info about those pieces, here.)
And although we may be far from finished in this room, it seems to be slowly-but-surely ship shapin’ up. (Yay!) Among other things, we’re on the hunt for a ceiling light, a large rug, and a piece of furniture to use at the foot of the bed. Maybe a bench, like this…?
Looks easy enough to make, eh?
And, of course, we look forward to tackling the barn door project one of these days too.

The How To Make The Perfect Bed post she published recently was awesome!
Now if I could just talk her into helping me and Kev make ours every day! I love slipping into a freshly made bed at night, but making it every morning just doesn’t seem to happen. That’s okay with Max though. He prefers the messy look…

Making the bed everyday is over rated and not necessary. Don’t sweat the small stuff! Keep up the great job of posting for us!
Layla
True dat! But oh how I enjoy the way a freshly-made bed feels at night! 😀
laura
Layla! It’s gorgeous!!!!!! you’ve managed to make red {a color I automatically put in the fall/winter category} into a fun, fresh, springy color!
Layla
Hey Laura!
The patches on the quilt and shams are actually taken from various nautical flags, so I guess that’s why it works. Love those colors!
🙂
Julie
Your bedroom looks so comfy! I love your style, it’s so “Tybee” 😉
I’m working on redoing mine with inspiration from your “Virginia Beach makeover” the layout of that room is very similar to mine, but I have long, high skinny windows. I just purchased my bookshelves yesterday! Trying to use what I have–my red/tan bedding–so I can purchase a flatscreen! Looooovee that room, it speaks to my heart and has a perfect balance of light and layers.
Heart you!
Layla
Thanks Julie! Your bedroom plans sound lovely! 🙂
Julie
Layla, can you maybe tell us some ideas for covering long, skinny, high above the bed windows? Besides layering beautiful floor to ceiling drapes…It has to be covered, but I haaaaate to spend $$ on curtains that keep my bed from being flush against the wall. Thanks!!
Layla
Have you checked out the drapes at Ikea? That’s where ours came from. Super huge selection, at super low prices! 😀
Sharyl@The Little Brown House

Heidi Pason
Sending blog LOVE!! Thanks for the mention on your blog!! After MANY years of showing my husband how to make the bed, he is NOW better at it then I am 🙂 There is still hope for Kevin!! hehe
Layla
Hey Heidi!
Kev’s actually a pretty good bed-maker, but we just can’t seem to make it on a regular basis! LOL!
And as for Max- he’s like the anti-bed-maker! He runs around on top of it and smooshes all the pillows whenever we do try to make it! 😀
Heidi Pason
Layla,
I am with you! I am LUCKY to get my bed make at all in a day, if it does happen it’s around 3 PM in the afternoon 🙂 Yes of COURSE kevin can make a bed.. He’s a Handy man… that means he can do ANYTHING!! Thanks again for the shout out!
~Heidi
P.S. So funny about Max!!

Beautiful Layla!!!! I’d love to have your bedroom!!
Can I ask you…where did you get your bedframe? And what color is it? Is it black or aged bronze? Its really pretty and I like the simplicity to it. I’d like it for myself!
Layla
Hey Jenna- and thank you!
Check out the link in the comment I left Debbie above. That’s got all the info!

I’m so glad you did a feature on “Our Vintage Home Love’. I’ve been looking for something to use as a great headboard for my equestrian themed room, and I love it! And I do hope you make the bench 😉 That’s another project I’d like to tackle!

This post was just the kick I needed to start making a pretty bed. again. I’ve been sloppy about it lately.
You are my favorite bloggers! Thanks for all the generous tips and ideas you send our way. You’ve been very helpful in making our “Cottage” more of what we want, and less of what we bought.

Your bedroom is wonderful! I am slowly re-doing mine as well from dark to light and airy-much like yours! It is amazing what just new bedding can do to a room.
Thanks for being a source of inspiration as I chronicle my own design journey!

I have a question about bedside tables….do you think they need to be the same height. My hubbie’s nightstand is part of the matchy matchy set we have and it’s loooooooow even thought the bed is high?!?!?!? I’ve tried everything for my side of the bed, but I can’t find anything that doesn’t look stupidly out of place.
Beth Miller
I love your blog! Where did you find that picture of the bench? That would be perfect in my bedroom!
Allie
Put beadboard on the ceiling! Put beadboard on the ceiling!!! LOVE THAT BEDDING!
Lindsey
This is just beautiful, Layla . . . what is the blue paint color you used on the walls??
