Our Boys Bedroom – Decorating Update

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to post an adoption update, but it sounds like the things are fiiiiinally starting to move a little down there in Haiti! We’re hearing that  appointments for Children’s Court (a new step in the Haitian adoption process) are going to start happening soon (or maybe some already have?), and that’s the last step that our son’s paperwork needs to go through before we get to go meet him! 😀

I’ve had so much fun working on his room this year. Every month, I do a little something.

Tuxedo Cat | Boys Bedroom

This month’s “little something” was a wall hanging for above his headboard.

I used fabric glue to attach some navy & white ribbon to a yellow & white piece of fabric from JoAnn’s Fabric.

I hemmed the edges, created a rod pocket, inserted a wooden dowel, and used rope- also from Jo-Ann’s. I used more fabric glue to make sure the ends of the rope won’t fray…

…and then my friend Rachel used screenprinting ink to paint on this “snips and snails” phrase:

I just LOVE the way the colors and textures play together….

…and I LOVE that it’s hanging from a SNAIL! 😀

Julia, (the talented gal who made it) calls it a “trophy slug”, but I’ve renamed it a trophy snail because it goes along better with the new banner. :-)

Now I’ve just gotta find a spot to hang his buddy with the bow tie…

I’m thinkin’ he may need to go in mama’s room. 😉

That wall hanging is just so darn cute! And with the snail hanger-perfect. Your little boys room is so darling and fingers crossed he will soon be home to sleep in his bed, in his house, with his mommy and daddy watching over him…

  2. Ter'e Crow Lindsay says

Could this room get any cuter????? I can’t wait to see him all safely tucked into his bed……in his beautiful room………and he knows “this room is mine”. Can you just see his little face?
    I can………….already. Bless your hearts…….

P.S. Everyplace I go…..I will be looking for little boy plaid shirts!!!!!! Haha

I’ve always adored that little nursery rhyme! And your son is one blessed boy to be soon sleeping in that beautiful, cozy space!

  4. says

Layla, this room is coming together so beautifully. I so love your style. The snail trophies are so cute. Your little man is going to be so thrilled with his new family and his gorgeous room. If you do any fundraising when the time comes to bring him home I’d be happy to help – just ask. Sam x

My blog partner/daughter announced her and hubby’s upcoming international adoption on yesterday’s post. They are six months in. The dossier is in, and now the wait for a match begins.

  6. Diane P. says

Stop it…it’s too cute!!!!! Thanks for the link, I will check out her site!

  7. Hope Williams says

I love the banner and especially the colors! The trophy snail is adorable too.
Could I use this glue to put new fabric on a lampshade? If not, what would work best for lampshades?
So happy for the adoption update and pray all continues moving forward quickly so your son comes home very soon!
    Thank you, Hope

  8. says

I hope you have a camera set up on the wall facing the door so you can see his reaction to his room when he comes in. Even if you don’t share it with us, the reaction to this well thought out room filled with love will be a priceless memory you’ll want to see over and over!

  9. Jane says

What a fabulous room! The banner & the snail are just what the room needed! The color choices are just perfect!
Thanks for the adoption update. Hopefully he will be home long before Christmas!
Now I have to go figure out how to convert the British pound to the American dollar so I can purchase my own “critter” from your friend!

    • Layla says

      Thank you, Jane!
And as for our sonny boy, we’re hoping to at least get to meet him before Christmas this year, and we’re *hoping* to get to bring him home long before Christmas of next year. There are several steps we still have to complete, but the next one (our 2 week bonding trip) is so exciting I feel like I’m going to burst when they tell me to book our tickets! 😀

  10. says

I love the pop of yellow in the room and the snail is a hoot! What is “snips” though? I have heard the sayng forever but don’t recall the “snips”–any ideas? Julia is quite clever with her slug version as they are always deer and a few others. Love it all!

    • Layla says

      Hi Kristin!
I checked Google and it seems like most folks think “snips” are “little bits of things that would be found in their pockets”. 😀

      • says

That makes perfect sense! Thanks for checking on it for me. I would usually Google something like that but was in a “thinking out loud” sort of mode while commenting I guess. :)

  11. Andrea Virnau says

Just adorable! You never fail to inspire!!!! And I’m still smiling about your fabric ” cookie cake”! Praying that the adoption process goes smoothly and quickly!! And…I always love seeing a pic Kit-Cat!!!

    • Layla says

Ha! I found the perfect home for that “cookie cake” last week, Andrea! I’ll show you on Monday. 😉

  12. says

SO excited to hear that the paperwork may be crossing the finish line soon!!! Your son’s room is so adorable and I’m sure he’s going to love spending time in his sweet space!

    • Layla says

Well, it’s actually more like the starting line, Jody, but any step is an exciting step in this process! 😀

  13. Maryjane from Manitoba says

I love it!! That’s so awesome!

How does Rachel do that lettering? I’d love to be able to make my own art with that lettering and a different saying? Can one submit a saying and get her to do that lettering? Or buy the letters and be creative?

I love the colours and especially the little character!

You are awesome! This little guy is sooooooo lucky!

    • Layla says

      Hi Maryjane!

Rachel is so talented, isn’t she!? 😀
I’m not exactly sure what her process is, but in this case, I think she sketched it out with a pencil first and then painted over it with the screen printing paint and a small paint brush.
You can find her on Facebook under Rachel Odom. I’m sure she’d be up for helping you! :-)

  14. Jenn A says

LOVE the snails!! So stinkin’ cute! And the hanging is perfect. I really like your style!

  15. Sharon Stinson says

Oh Layla, I hope this precious boy comes to realize very quickly what *exceptional* parents he has been given. Your love shines through in every talented made, unique and personalized part of his room and I just know Kevin sharing his love with his son through music will form such a bond. Each time I open a Lettered Cottage message, can’t help but whisper “Lord, please let this child be *home* without further delay!” Continued prayers to that end – gosh, that kiddo is gonna think that’s the bestest room in the whole world – literally! :)

  16. Rachel Odom says

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your sweet son’s room! I love that you and Kevin went with the yellow dots! I love how it turned out and it was such a fun project!! :)

P.s. I am so in love with the snails! I love the close up shots!!

  17. Julianna says

This room is SOOO cute! Hope your little one is sleeping in his bed very soon!
Also, can you tell me where you got the bed? I adore it!

  18. says

So sweet – love the banner and the hook is adorable. Your little one is so loved and soon it will be in person. Happy for you!

  19. jude-mom says

The snail hooks are so-o-o-o cute! I love the way your projects usually contain MANY surprise elements : ) You will be such a FUN mom!

    • Leslie Brown says

Layla is going to be an exceptional mother! But, then children learn from their parents, and it would seem that you were an exceptional mother to have raised her to be such an incredible loving, caring (and talented, funny…I could go on!) daughter. 😉 And your reward for being such a fine example of a mother, you get to be “grandma” to that adorable master sweet p! I will bet you are just as excited for that little boy to come home. I swear there are times I can almost hear the laughter and giggles that will be filling Kev snd Lay’s home. I pray that it will be soon!

  20. Tenesha says

That room is so adorable! Love that sign..your craft skills are awesome! Such a great idea

  21. Jeanne says

That is just darling!!!! I love your banner with the yellow and blue…..one of my favorite combinations.

  22. says

Love, it! How cute is the banner with the snail?! I can’t wait for your little guy to see his room that Mommy and Daddy have created for him.

  23. Angie Meyer says

ADORABLE!! I love everything about this room.:) Can’t wait to read the post about your little one’s reaction. Prayers sent that you may have him soon!

P.S. Did you paint the head board/foot board, or did you buy it already painted? I have pair of twin beds similar to yours and love that color. Wondered what the paint color was…. if you painted them yourself. :)

  24. says

OH MY! that is so precious! This is one lucky boy, I hope you get to love on him in person soon! Praying for your family Layla. Thank you for sharing this tender journey.

  25. Laurie says

Adorable!! It could not be any cuter…made my day! : ) What a cozy, sweet room designed with such great love for your precious little guy. Before you know it, he will be asking for a batman poster on his closet door too! : ) Praying that he can be at home in his room very soon!

  26. says

Oh, my goodness! The trophy snail totally makes it!! SO CUTE! :) I hope your little guy gets to admire it in person VERY SOON.

  27. says

Oh my gosh, that is so adorable! I need a trophy slug too. With 4 boys, there’s got to be a place around here for one somewhere.

  28. says

Sweet as can be! Glad that your heart is filled with joy and love. Off-topic – I assumed that “Sweet P.” was a reference to your last name, Palmer. I see an “S” pillow on his bed, so I’m wondering what the significance of the S is. Did I miss something? Have you shared his name?

    • Layla says

      Hi Paula!

The “P” actually stands for Palmer when I refer to him as “Sweet P”. :-)
      I’m Mama P, Kevin’s Daddy P, and baby P makes three!
The “S” is the first letter of his name. I haven’t blogged about it yet, but I look forward to once he’s officially a Palmer on paper! 😀

  29. says

    No waaaay!!! Too cute!

I love how you are “preparing a room” for him…reminds me of how God is preparing a room for each of us!

Very precious. Look forward to hearing more about your adoption journey.

    • Layla says

      Hi Sasha!
I just cut the yellow dotted fabric into the shape of the banner and draped it over the dowel so I could see where I needed to sew the rod pocket. Last but not least, I sewed around the outside of the whole banner. Hope that helps! :-)

  30. Georgia Koenig says

What an adorable room you have created for your boy! And such a cozy bed with the cuddly Teddy just waiting for him to snuggle down to sleep! Prayers that you get to meet & bring home your son SOON.

  31. Penny says

It’s absolutely adorable snail and all. What a sweet room….. I hope
that soon your little son will be in it…..

Take care & all the best to you,
PS Your friends are very talented, I love their creations.

  32. says

I check in here every once in a while and all I know is that “I” want you and Kevin to adopt ME. 😉
Love the room… your boy will love it too, BUT he will be so happy to have a home that he won’t give a sh*t whether there’s a snail or a slug, or whatever you want to call it, in there. 😉
    Best to you both,

  33. Makenzie says

Love this room so much! Do you mind telling me where the curtains are from? Thank you so much!

  34. Savannah says

I love this room so much that I want to redecorate my sons room to look more like this! Would you please share where the curtains are from? They are the perfect shade of blue…so calming! I absolutely love what you have done!
