Mended
** This giveaway has ended **
Happy ‘Home Study #1′ Day!!!
We’re SO excited to have our friend/social worker, Beth, coming over for a visit today! It feels like the first real big step in our “paper pregnancy“, so we’re feeling really blessed to be able to spend this time with her today.
We did some laundry yesterday, and we still have to secure of couple of bookcases to the wall in our bedroom, but we were told long ago that this visit isn’t about how clean your house is, so we’re not going to stress about all the chores that still aren’t done.

Instead, we’ve decided to spend some more quiet time with each other so that we can talk about our hopes and dreams for the future, and about what kind of parents we hope and dream to be to our child. That feels like a good way to prepare for Beth’s first visit, and we can’t wait to share more about it all next week!

I started my friend Angie‘s book last night. It’s called Mended.

I scooped up two of them the other day- one for me, and one for someone reading this post! (Note: Mended is on sale for $5 at Lifeway book stores right now if you don’t win the giveaway and would like to purchase it.)
Here’s a short video of Angie talking about Mended: (Email subscribers will have to click over to The Lettered Cottage to watch.)
If you’d like to enter for a chance to win the extra copy I picked up, just leave a comment on this post between now and Monday (January 14th, 2013) at 8:00am (Central Time), and I’ll randomly select a winner after that.

Angie doesn’t know I’m blogging about her book today, (Surprise, Angie!) but like I’m sure our social worker Beth will prove to be throughout our adoption journey, she’s been such a bright light in my life and I cherish our friendship so very much.
Good luck, and thanks so much for swinging by for a visit today!

For pics and updates in between posts, join us over on Twitter, Facebook and/or Instagram!

So glad I stopped by today! I am going to have to share your blog with some friends of mine. They have been on a journey for over a year. They are in a foster program which they are praying will lead to adopt. They were licensed in May 2011 and in October they were contacted to foster not one toddler, but two, a brother and sister!! They fully accepted what God had place in their path. So now they have two sweet beautiful children to love and care for as long as the Lord allows. It is so exciting to see the Lord work in their lives. Thanks for sharing your journey!

I have to say, the video for this Book Trailer made me cry. There are so many times in my life that I feel like I too am little broken, and need mending. It’s so difficult to ask for help (especially to the Big Guy Upstairs)…I haven’t spoken to him in years, and I”m feeling like I need to. So that’s what I’m going to do. Thanks for this – I needed a good book.
-

Wow! Listening to Angie really hit me hard today! I am going through my own struggles right now and what hit me at this very moment is that I am not alone! I am so blessed and thankful for everything that I have – family, friends, a good job, a roof over my head and food on the table…But even with all that there is something inside me that feels out of place and the title of the book Mending is what I am feeling…I work at a family homeless shelter in downtown Columbus, Oh and I see families struggle everyday and it is my goal to be strong so that I can help them…I am so happy for you two and the journey you are on and just having followed your blog for some time now I know that your baby will be happy and LOVED! Have a great weekend!

Awesome!
Love Angie and her willingness to shine through her brokenness. I pray I am able to do that as well. We who have wounds can become “wounded healers” when we allow Him who is the Healer to touch our wounds, heal us and then by His grace use us to help others.
Thanks for sharing this book. I wasn’t aware of it. Whether I win it or not I plan on reading it! -

Karen says:Jan 11, 2013 at 10:08 am
Thank you for what I needed to hear this morning. Often I “pretend” I am not broken, forgetting what He has done for me. I try to caulk the cracks, wasting time and energy, so the world will not see me as I really am. Oh, to let Him be in charge of the mending, so His light will shine through me and give glory to the Eternal Mender!

Our beautiful daughter will be 16 this May. I remember the adoption process like it was yesterday. Cherish this time while you are waiting for your precious baby. Journal everything – you will want to share the process with your little one some day. I remember being excited to know how our story would end. God has blessed us so much! I couldn’t imagine our lives without our daughter. God knew exactly who He wanted in our family and his timing is perfect. I pray for patience as you wait, but don’t ever get discouraged, God knows exactly which child He will bless you with.

Feeling very sad, alone, and broken; after many major surgeries, 4 failed IVF’s, and a husband who decided to leave me because of my health issues in pursuit of his own happiness has me mourning a life that could have been and never will be. It’s a very dark place that seems unsurmountable. Hanging on by a thread….. will definitely read this book and pray to be uplifted in some way.

Regarding your adoption process, we adopted two of our kids, and it is the greatest miracle in every way. The miracle of life, their biological mother’s choice, and the miracle that God chose us to give them a forever family.
You and Kevin will be wonderful parents. It all starts with having a great desire to become a parent and then having faith that God will send you the child that needs you the most. Congratulations on your decision and good luck. You’ll be in my prayers.

So happy for you and your adoption adventure. God is so very good…all the time.
Thanks also for helping me on my journey today. He’s been leading me down different paths…for different lessons and different reasons…and I’m enjoying the ride. Today, he spoke to me through you by your letting us know about the Mended book for $5 at Lifeway. I had been wanting to read it but had put it on the “backburner.” After reading your post I ran there to pick one up tonight…and lo and behold…there on the shelf…was ONE lonely Mended book left…for me….just for me. I think He was telling me that now is the the time to get to it.
Thank you! It’s so fun to see how God connects us all to help each other…even if it’s something as simple as a great price on a book that is going to bless lives. Can’t wait to hear Him speak through the book. Thanks for being the messenger!
Have a great weekend!

I can totally relate to Angie’s comment that God shines through our brokenness. The day before my 60th birthday I was diagnosed with and agressive form of breast cancer. This year of trials, surgery, chemo and radiation have reinforced what I already knew: God is made strong in my weakness.

I would love to win this book! If not, I’d like to get it. It reminds me of when my daughter purchased a bird statuary for me and broke it before she gave it to me. She painstakingly glued all of the pieces back together and gave it to me. Ordinarily, I am not one to keep anything even chipped, but this has always been special to me. Our lives are not perfect, but they can be mended. I hope that everything went well for you today and that your adoption journey will go smoothly.

I stopped by your site this morning and was curious about the broken pitcher…needless to say the answer I found brought tears to my eyes. I think we all are broken pitchers. However, I feel sometimes we are ashamed of our broken pieces and try to pass ourselves off as being shiny and new to the world. When faced with the true reality that I too am broken, it brought me to instant tears. Thank you so much for putting her video on your site.

The trailer for this book reminds me of my niece-by-marriage, Tammie Head. She has written a Bible study, “Duty or Delight” and is currently writing a book of her testimony. She is so on fire for Jesus and has lived through so MANY broken pieces of her life to be radically redeemed.

As a mother of three domestically adopted children…who we have endearingly named the 3E’s…they are all true blessings from heaven for us.
If I may make these few suggestions that I/we have experienced during our adoption journey…this journey may be exciting, yet emotionally exhausting; there may be times it appears that a baby will never come your way—but just lean on God–He knows best; stay strong as a loving couple; and things work on God’s time.
Best Wishes! -

Thanks for being so thoughtful to pick up two books and give one away!
I have a few friends who have recently adopted little ones from Ukraine. What a blessing adoption is – to the forever families and to the little ones.
Praying for you as you go through your adoption journey. -

Good luck with your visit. I know you will do just fine. I haven’t experienced a visit from someone as I prepare for an adoption but I would think it is far better to be in touch with reality (like laundry waiting for you) than to appear perfect.

I began following your blog last fall sometime, and thought it was mainly an interior decorating type blog. What a wonderful surprise it has been, feeling like I have been completely drawn in to your lives and a witness to what God is doing for you. I’ve never met you, but find myself praying for your adoption.
Isn’t life amazing! Thanks for your inspiration – you have not only inspired me to make my home “homier” (is that a word?) but to trust God more fully and enjoy the journey! -

Thanks for sharing about this book. I have it on my list of books to look for. Each of us can relate to the image presented, in our own way. What a gift an author is given to put those thoughts, feelings, and relationship with God into words to help others.
