Mended

** This giveaway has ended **

Happy ‘Home Study #1′ Day!!!

We’re SO excited to have our friend/social worker, Beth, coming over for a visit today! It feels like the first real big step in our “paper pregnancy“, so we’re feeling really blessed to be able to spend this time with her today.

We did some laundry yesterday, and we still have to secure of couple of bookcases to the wall in our bedroom, but we were told long ago that this visit isn’t about how clean your house is, so we’re not going to stress about all the chores that still aren’t done.

Instead, we’ve decided to spend some more quiet time with each other so that we can talk about our hopes and dreams for the future, and about what kind of parents we hope and dream to be to our child. That feels like a good way to prepare for Beth’s first visit, and we can’t wait to share more about it all next week!

I started my friend Angie‘s book last night. It’s called Mended.

I scooped up two of them the other day- one for me, and one for someone reading this post! (Note: Mended is on sale for $5 at Lifeway book stores right now if you don’t win the giveaway and would like to purchase it.)

Here’s a short video of Angie talking about Mended: (Email subscribers will have to click over to The Lettered Cottage to watch.)

If you’d like to enter for a chance to win the extra copy I picked up, just leave a comment on this post between now and Monday (January 14th, 2013) at 8:00am (Central Time), and I’ll randomly select a winner after that.

Angie doesn’t know I’m blogging about her book today, (Surprise, Angie!) but like I’m sure our social worker Beth will prove to be throughout our adoption journey, she’s been such a bright light in my life and I cherish our friendship so very much.

Good luck, and thanks so much for swinging by for a visit today!

I hadn’t even heard of her new book, but I remember when she broke the pitcher and glued it back together. I read her blog then. :) Sounds like a great book. Thanks for a chance to win. :) I’m sure your first home study will be a success!! :)

  9. says

Wow, this video touched me. I too feel that way sometimes in my life. What an awesome way to view the broken-ness in our lives. I can’t wait to now read this book!!! Thanks for sharing

  10. says

I hope today is great for you guys! I know how exciting it feels to be doing anything to move forward on an adoption :)

  11. says

So glad I stopped by today! I am going to have to share your blog with some friends of mine. They have been on a journey for over a year. They are in a foster program which they are praying will lead to adopt. They were licensed in May 2011 and in October they were contacted to foster not one toddler, but two, a brother and sister!! They fully accepted what God had place in their path. So now they have two sweet beautiful children to love and care for as long as the Lord allows. It is so exciting to see the Lord work in their lives. Thanks for sharing your journey!

  12. says

Hope your visit goes well. I have a friend who is going through the same process. Would love to win the book.

  13. says

Things always happen for a reason. I found myself here today and saw the book Mended. I am at the very beginning of a difficult journey and the days are sad and lonely right now. Even if I am not the lucky winner, I will purchase the book. Thanks for sharing this book and video.

  14. says

Sounds like a really good book I would enjoy reading. I thank God He gave me the desire to read! And I do a lot of it starting with His Word every morning. I pray your journey of adopting a new little one will be smooth and full of the favor of God and that you will know He has guided your every step.

  15. says

I have to say, the video for this Book Trailer made me cry. There are so many times in my life that I feel like I too am little broken, and need mending. It’s so difficult to ask for help (especially to the Big Guy Upstairs)…I haven’t spoken to him in years, and I”m feeling like I need to. So that’s what I’m going to do. Thanks for this – I needed a good book. :)

  16. Robbin says

It sounds like a wonderful book…and a wonderful reminder of God’s love through all our imperfections. Love your blog, Layla and Kevin. Sending prayers for you during your adoption journey. So happy for you!

  17. Karie says

Wow! Listening to Angie really hit me hard today! I am going through my own struggles right now and what hit me at this very moment is that I am not alone! I am so blessed and thankful for everything that I have – family, friends, a good job, a roof over my head and food on the table…But even with all that there is something inside me that feels out of place and the title of the book Mending is what I am feeling…I work at a family homeless shelter in downtown Columbus, Oh and I see families struggle everyday and it is my goal to be strong so that I can help them…I am so happy for you two and the journey you are on and just having followed your blog for some time now I know that your baby will be happy and LOVED! Have a great weekend!

  18. says

Eek! I just adore Angie (although I haven’t been so lucky as to meet her, so my adoration stems from her blog and beautiful, courageous story). I’d love to win! :)

  19. says

“we’ve decided to spend some more quiet time with each other so that we can talk about our hopes and dreams for the future, and about what kind of parents we hope and dream to be to our child” AW… TEARS!!! I LOVE that you’re spending time that way instead of a flurry of cleaning!

  20. Sharon says

Sounds like an amazing book, something we all need to hear. I can’t wait to read it!

  21. Amy says

    Awesome!
Love Angie and her willingness to shine through her brokenness. I pray I am able to do that as well. We who have wounds can become “wounded healers” when we allow Him who is the Healer to touch our wounds, heal us and then by His grace use us to help others.
Thanks for sharing this book. I wasn’t aware of it. Whether I win it or not I plan on reading it!

  22. says

Praying for you guys today! Its going to be great. Thanks for sharing your journey. I hope that one day I can take a similar one.

Also, Angie’s book sounds amazing. If I don’t win then I will have to pick up a copy for myself.

  23. says

Good luck with your visit today. If you put half the love and devotion into parenting that you put into your homes you will be wonderful parents. Also, as a mom of a toddler I can tell you that anchoring furniture to walls is a MUST :) Those little ones are stronger than they seem!

  24. Kristin H. says

Wow, the trailer made me tear up. I’ve been feeling the brokenness in my life especially this week as I think about how my daughter would have been one year old today if we hadn’t experienced a miscarriage.

We’re a waiting family in the adoption process and understand what you’re going through. I know your home study will go wonderfully!

    • says

      Kristin,

I hope it’s okay to jump in here and say you’re not alone in your journey. Your words touched me & I hope your adoption process moves swiftly. Best of luck!

  25. Sherri says

Oh, my, that sounds so like what I’ve been going through lately! Thank you for sharing the video. It made me smile when she told about the light shining through.

  26. Angela says

Have a wonderful time today! Thoughts & prayers coming your way that this will be a smooth process for you both!

  27. Karen says

Thank you for what I needed to hear this morning. Often I “pretend” I am not broken, forgetting what He has done for me. I try to caulk the cracks, wasting time and energy, so the world will not see me as I really am. Oh, to let Him be in charge of the mending, so His light will shine through me and give glory to the Eternal Mender!

  28. Emily R. says

Sounds like an amazing book with a great message! Thank you for your generosity.

  29. Jewel says

Whether I win the book or not, the video clip was just what I needed to see this morning, reminding me once again of God’s perfect timing. Thank you for sharing.

  30. says

I already have a copy so I don’t need to be entered in the contest, but just wanted to say that I love this book! I received it for Christmas and read through the entire thing in one sitting. I am now going back and working through the devotionals each day. Angie Smith is an amazing writer, I love her blog and all of her other books too! Prayers for your adoption journey!

  31. Jan says

Wow. Crying while I write this. Guess I’m not as “mended” as I thought! Thanks for sharing the video, God working thru others to show me that I have more work to do!

Journal everything – you will want to share the process with your little one some day. I remember being excited to know how our story would end. God has blessed us so much! I couldn’t imagine our lives without our daughter. God knew exactly who He wanted in our family and his timing is perfect. So happy for you and your adoption adventure. God is so very good…all the time.

Thanks also for helping me on my journey today. He’s been leading me down different paths…for different lessons and different reasons…and I’m enjoying the ride. Today, he spoke to me through you by your letting us know about the Mended book for $5 at Lifeway. I had been wanting to read it but had put it on the “backburner.” After reading your post I ran there to pick one up tonight…and lo and behold…there on the shelf…was ONE lonely Mended book left…for me….just for me. I think He was telling me that now is the the time to get to it.

Thank you! It’s so fun to see how God connects us all to help each other…even if it’s something as simple as a great price on a book that is going to bless lives. Can’t wait to hear Him speak through the book. Thanks for being the messenger!

    Have a great weekend!

  114. says

Enjoy each minute of this adventure! It will go by so fast and one day your daughter or son will be in college and you will be wondering where the years went.

  117. says

I can totally relate to Angie’s comment that God shines through our brokenness. The day before my 60th birthday I was diagnosed with and agressive form of breast cancer. This year of trials, surgery, chemo and radiation have reinforced what I already knew: God is made strong in my weakness.

  118. Helen Smith says

I know I am surely broken. I want to believe that God
Loves me and wants to heal me… But He has never spoken to me.

Layla, THANK YOU for sharing the video promo for “Mended!” It is so beautiful and has left me in good chills and tears in my eyes. I am looking forward to reading it. I want to also tell you that you are in my prayers as you go through the journey towards adoption. What a wonderful blessing and journey!

  120. says

I love the phrase “paper pregnancy.” I’ve never heard it before and may find a way to use it myself! :) I do know the blessings of adoption journeys firsthand (we have two of them ourselves that I never tire of telling or thinking about …) and I pray you sense God’s peace and faithfulness all through yours.

  121. Ginger says

I would love to win this book! If not, I’d like to get it. It reminds me of when my daughter purchased a bird statuary for me and broke it before she gave it to me. She painstakingly glued all of the pieces back together and gave it to me. Ordinarily, I am not one to keep anything even chipped, but this has always been special to me. Our lives are not perfect, but they can be mended. I hope that everything went well for you today and that your adoption journey will go smoothly.

  122. says

Wow. I watched the video and ended up w/ goosebumps and a healthy dose of tears welling up in my eyes. I think about my own life and where I’ve come from, and the direction I go to, hopefully a stronger person with each step.

  123. Heather's Hodgepodge says

I love it when bloggers write books! Congrats on another step towards completing your dream!

  125. Lynn M says

Ooh, there’s someone that we know that could really use Mended. I love the part where she talked about the light coming through the cracks. Lovely.

  126. says

I too have been through the home study process on my journey to adoption. And I too feel I live a life through the prism of many broken pieces. Thankfor the chance to win such a gracious story .Peace and blessings to you both in your journey.

  127. says

Love what Angie said about the Light being able to shine through the broken pieces because they don’t fit back together perfectly. If we were perfect we would have no need Of Him. What a wonderful thing to think about. Thanks for sharing this today. I needed it.

  128. Nedra says

This sounds like an awesome book. Good luck as you walk down the path of becoming a parent. There is nothing like the blessing that a child brings into your life

  129. Lisa S. says

I LOVE Angie! Have followed her blog for years, she has a wonderful heart. And her writing is wonderful!

  130. says

I think coming to terms with your past is one of the most difficult parts of our journey. I know I still struggle with it daily but what a beautiful way to describe our “brokeness”. I would be honored to win this book.

  131. Kelly says

I’m pretty sure Angie was on a women’s
Lifeway devotions CD I got for Christmas- I really like her! If that’s her home in the video- we need a tour via your blog :)

  132. Kim says

Good luck with your home visit. I just know you’ll be shining stars! And I’d love to win “Mended”!

  134. JENNIFER says

My family and my life is so broken, trying to get back on the right path and soak my everything in the lord…. Sounds like a book to help me in that journey…. I would really like this book, feels like it is what’s calling to me now.. thank you for the giveaway.

  135. Leslie says

I stopped by your site this morning and was curious about the broken pitcher…needless to say the answer I found brought tears to my eyes. I think we all are broken pitchers. However, I feel sometimes we are ashamed of our broken pieces and try to pass ourselves off as being shiny and new to the world. When faced with the true reality that I too am broken, it brought me to instant tears. Thank you so much for putting her video on your site.

  136. Becky says

Oh I love Angie! God has used her book “What Women Fear” to shed light on things I had been harboring, that I had no idea I was. Thankful for Godly ladies like you both! Praising God on your “paper pregnancy.” :0) My husband and I have just finally said “yes, Lord” to His calling on our lives to adopt. We always thought we “couldn’t afford it.” Truth is, we can’t afford not to!!

  137. Tami Bator says

Wow! How timely was your blog post! Lately, out of nowhere, I’ve been beating myself up for my past mistakes as a mother and a woman and it makes me cry when I recall all of my shortcomings. Angie’s video made me cry and prompted me to order her book. I can’t wait to read it. Thanks for sharing Layla. Once again, your blog has been a blessing to this new follower.

  138. Jill P says

Sounds great…thanks for the chance to win! And many prayers for your beautiful journey!

  139. Sandi Samms says

I am so excited about your adoption journey. I see Jesus in you two and I know He is watching over this entire process.

The trailer for this book reminds me of my niece-by-marriage, Tammie Head. She has written a Bible study, “Duty or Delight” and is currently writing a book of her testimony. She is so on fire for Jesus and has lived through so MANY broken pieces of her life to be radically redeemed.

  140. Lindsey Eckert says

I am so excited for the journey you are on! I also love reading anything Angie has done…thanks for the chance to win this book!

  152. Dawn Ekblaw says

As a mother of three domestically adopted children…who we have endearingly named the 3E’s…they are all true blessings from heaven for us.
If I may make these few suggestions that I/we have experienced during our adoption journey…this journey may be exciting, yet emotionally exhausting; there may be times it appears that a baby will never come your way—but just lean on God–He knows best; stay strong as a loving couple; and things work on God’s time.
    Best Wishes!

  153. says

I am rather new to your blog… and I’m glad I’m joining you near the beginning of your adoption journey!! :)

Thanks for being so thoughtful to pick up two books and give one away!
I have a few friends who have recently adopted little ones from Ukraine. What a blessing adoption is – to the forever families and to the little ones.
Praying for you as you go through your adoption journey.

  159. Dawn says

Good luck with your visit. I know you will do just fine. I haven’t experienced a visit from someone as I prepare for an adoption but I would think it is far better to be in touch with reality (like laundry waiting for you) than to appear perfect.

  160. Teresa Minton says

Sounds like a very good read and an inspiration. Many prayers and blessings as you add to your family.

  161. says

Just watching that trailer of Angie talking about the book, I feel like I can totally relate to her and the journey her life has taken her on. Her book is one I definitely need to own. Thank you for sharing it with all of us!

I heard Angie speak last year at Women of Faith and was so touched by her story. I would love to read the book! BTW, love your blog too! :)

  164. Heidi DeJong says

I began following your blog last fall sometime, and thought it was mainly an interior decorating type blog. What a wonderful surprise it has been, feeling like I have been completely drawn in to your lives and a witness to what God is doing for you. I’ve never met you, but find myself praying for your adoption. :) Isn’t life amazing! Thanks for your inspiration – you have not only inspired me to make my home “homier” (is that a word?) but to trust God more fully and enjoy the journey!

  165. Jennifer says

This book sounds so great. Thanks for the chance to win it and good luck with the home visit!

  167. Siobhan says

Thanks for sharing about this book. I have it on my list of books to look for. Each of us can relate to the image presented, in our own way. What a gift an author is given to put those thoughts, feelings, and relationship with God into words to help others.

  168. Valerie says

Sounds like a great read – been in and out of seasons in my life when I don’t let Christ shine through. It is always encouraging to hear about other people’s journeys. I enjoy your blog – you are a bright spot because you are genuine and heartfelt – thank you!
