There’s no turning back now!
The old backsplash is gone, and the countertops on each side of the stove are coming out on Wednesday.
The new backsplash will go in sometime next week. Which reminds me- did you guess which one we chose? 😀
(1 & 2- Glass Tile Oasis, 3- Caledonia Stone & Tile)
If you guessed #3, you were right! 😀
We only had two requests when it come to the type of mosaic tile we hoped to splash our back with: 1) we wanted something with ming green in it, and 2) we wanted it to look like a quilt pattern. Sort of like this:
Unfortunately the company we’re partnered with doesn’t carry the one above, but choice #3 was definitely close enough, and we’ve always loved the way it looked in Sarah’s summer house, too…
After the old tile and drywall was out, we discovered two “pop-in” boxes just floating around inside the wall.
Technically, the plastic boxes (holding our floating outlets) should be attached to the studs next to them, like this light switch box is:
But because they’re pop-in boxes, there’s no way to attach them. They’re only secured to the drywall in front of them and apparently that’s not the most ideal way to support the box that holds your live wires. So, although we had only planned to replace the outlets and switches (from ivory to bright white), it looks like we’ll be needing an electrician to help us re-organize our lightning this week, too. 😉

Absolutely stunning!! I can’t wait to see them up.
Where are these mosaic patterns from? I’ve gotta check this place out! 🙂
Layla
Thank you, Mary! #1 and #2 are from Glass Tile Oasis, and #3 is from Caledonia! 🙂

Oh- gotta love those unexpected reno surprises! I wasn’t into that third tile until you showed the picture of it up on the wall. Quilty. Totally 100% you. I adore it and can’t wait to see this place all gussied up. I have a feeling I’m gonna be super jealous :p

Yeah once you make that hole in the wall, swipe of paint in the entry way, etc…there’s no going back! (Well, unless you just learn to live with it and I’ve heard plenty of those stories too!) Looking forward to seeing the backsplash!

It’s gorgeous! I can’t wait to see how it all turns out!
Kristin
It is great to see #3 up in Sarah’s house to get an idea. Oh–it is beautiful! Gosh, I really need to find time to watch her webisodes–so LOVE her work!

Love that backsplash selection! Those soft colors….

Love it Layla! Our backsplash is going in this week too, we chose a Moroccan tile in powder blue from Walker Zanger and I can’t wait to see how it looks!
Gina
Love the backsplash! Cannot wait to see the finished product! The design looks so different from the angle of your shot….had no idea that was the same as the one in Sarah’s Summer House.
Colleen
Love the backsplash tile!!
Just curious… we have the same microwave-stove combo as you… and we hate the positioning. Too close to the stove. Feels cramped and I find that the microwave doesn’t draw well and the handle on the microwave, being stainless, gets too hot to touch when using the stovetop. Are you going to remove the microwave and tile up higher behind stove? When we tile our backsplash we hope to remove the microwave, tile higher and a add a nice range hood (that won’t allow the smoke alarms to go off when I’m cooking pancakes ). Enjoy your renovation!!
Nancy
I hadn’t thought of those issues regarding having a microwave over the stove. If and when we renovate our kitchen, that is the arrangement that my hubby wants although I have never liked it. One other issue for us is that having a microwave in a more accessible location allows the kids to be more independent in heating up something for themselves. It will be a number of years before Sweet Pea is at that age, but it will be here before you know it. And anything that promotes getting your kids to safely cook in the kitchen for themselves is worth it.

I can’t wait to see! I love the circular pattern–it’s so different, and in no way boring!! 🙂
Molly
This how our kitchen looked for a while! We still have exposed boxes and bare drywall which will be back-splashed soon. We had a contractor take our deposit and run 🙁 so our kitchen project has been dragging out since November. Had to rework our budget! So this is really fun seeing you guys go through the same process! Our cabinets will be painted as a soon as we pick a backsplash Andries the right color.
Stacy
The backsplash is WONDERFUL! We are in the design stage of our kitchen re-do and the backsplash was my hang up. LOVE how it looks…would have never ever thought of a quilt pattern. Thanks for sharing your ideas…and if you are ever in the Atlanta area, please come by my house!! You can give me decorating advice and I’ll make food!

Electricity and wiring make me crazy. I have an electrician coming next week. He’ll be busy.
Main project is light boxes. Not one of the bathroom over mirror lights in my whole house had boxes. Just random wires. I’m down to the last bathroom of changing out the lighting and we’re not messing around this time. Calling in the pros.
Laura
I can’t wait to see the end results. I love this tile and think it will be gorgeous with your new counters and painted cabinets. I think your half bath renovation is one of my all time favorites and I am sure your kitchen renovation won’t disappoint.
I know from experience that renovating a kitchen with little ones
is difficult Glad you get to do this now.

I love #3! It’s going to be gorgeous. I can’t wait to see all the photos. I’m glad you took apart your backsplash and can now fix those wires. Amazing what contractors can get away with!

Oh Layla,
I just love the quilt like quality of the pattern you have chosen. It is so you! I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Lynn
Good for you for using an Electrician! You should always use professionals to do that kind of work!!
Leslie
Just wanted to let you know I got my T-shirt today and I absolutely love it! It is sooo soft, I’m sorry I did not order both of them.
I guessed # 3, yeah me 🙂 I’m looking forward to the transformation, although I liked what was there; well maybe not the backspash, but it definately was not ya’ll.

Yippee!!! I am so excited!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

LOVE your choice!! But I have to admit I was wrong:( I thought number 1 would be your pick. Just looked like your style from reading your blog for a very long time now. But silly me, I should of known “quilt” would be a want!!!
Been through ALLOT of remodeling, big and pregnant and all, and built a home. There never is a time when there is extra stuff that pops up! But we gotta keep you safe. Cannot wait to see the end result. Going to be beautiful for sure!
Ashli
Beautiful, I’m jealous! I know you will create something that looks just like home! Can’t wait to see the journey…
Danielle
Love the tile! x

Since you are organizing your lightning :)…Have you considered the receptacles that include usb ports? They may come in handy. Just a thought.

Love that inspiration wall! Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!

What a beautiful pattern! Can’t wait to see it all finished!
Nita{ModVintageLife}
I thought I didn’t like the tile you chose but then when you pointed out that its the same tile used in Sarah Richardson’s kitchen….well…I’ve always loved that! It’s going to look marvelous.
Beth
I have that exact photo of Sarah’s House in a dresser drawer. I’ve always loved that kitchen! That backsplash is beautiful, and something that not everybody will have in their kitchens. That’s always something I consider when renoing our house. I like a classic look, but unexpected at the same time. This tile definitely fits the bill. Great choice!
Can’t wait to see it all come together, and can’t wait til next spring, when we plan on renoing our kitchen. Our bathroom was worse, so I chose to do it this year. Now I’ll be counting down the months til next tax refund time. 🙂
Have a great day!
Beth.
